Greetings!

So, the Indians haven't melted down (yet). The Browns have actually identified their starting quarterback (so far). And we're celebrating another anniversary, having made it 6 years.
And it's been a journey. If you dissected my brain (please don't) 6 years ago, you would've seen a large section of it oriented to "tech geek" stuff, with a side dish of "easily entertained" and a dash of "it's cool to be a kid."
These days? Dissect my brain now (again, please don't) and you'll see "business owner" has taken over the "tech geek." Thankfully the "easily entertained" and "it's cool to be a kid" pieces seem to be doing quite well, thank you very much.
I simultaneously welcome the change and miss the geek part. But I think it's an inevitable result of the path that we've taken at Simplex-IT over the years. Prior to Simplex-IT it was me, myself and I. Starting Simplex-IT added Sam Hays to the mix. Fast forward to now with 7 full-time, 3 part time and a couple of occasional folks (including the aforementioned Sam Hays). No wonder the brain transformation!
And we're up to near 50 customers with ongoing agreements with us. And it looks like that number will continue to grow.
Our eNewsletter is the envy of many of our competitors and continues to go out to over 2,500 folks each month. Our free Lunchinars are their 5th year, and average 20 or so attendees.
And the diversity of technology continues to grow. More and more Apple devices (which we have greater monitoring ability than ever before). More and more tablets and smart phones. More companies want to share data while on the go. See this issue for a couple of examples of technology further down the road and how we're looking at those innovations now.
I've already been asked to speak at events in 2014 (which is great, we love getting out and being opinionated).
We've been recognized with 3 awards by our profession and partners this year, which is cool.
And the Crotchety Olde Geek weblog had its second post in July. Not as much traffic as the first (which I didn't expect there to be). But still good feedback.
So, are you coming to our picnic? It's the 6th annual Neighborhood picnic, free and open to the public. Geek games, prizes, some demos and free food. See elsewhere in the issue for information and how to RSVP.
You really should, you know.

Windows Blue (8.1) - First Impressions
| |
Bob here. I asked Hasan (an intern here) to take a look at Windows 8.1, code-named "Blue." I thought his thoughts made for a great blog article. Enjoy!
My name is Hasan Mutlu and I'm a senior at Hudson high school. Using technology and becoming part of that world is exciting and as I intern at Simplex-IT for the summer, I gain experience with technology. Bob had me play around with a Windows 8.1 device and I'm writing to tell you my opinion on it and whether or not I believe it's worth downloading.
I have played around with Windows 8.1, also known as Windows Blue and there are a few things I've noticed that I would like to tell you about. The device I used Windows 8.1 on was a touchscreen tablet that was running on an i5 processor along with 4 gigs of RAM. It was my first time using Windows 8 in a touchscreen environment as I had always used it on a non-touchscreen laptop. There are some good, and some bad changes made to Windows 8.

Google Glass shows up at Simplex-IT
| | |
Brandon Joins the Borg as its most junior member.
Bob here. Ok, this one is pretty cool. And yes, I'm jealous. In a geek jealousy sort of way.
Our own Brandon King was recently accepted into the Google Glass Explorer program (it's pretty hard to get into). He went out to the Google offices in New York last week, where he picked up his own Google Glass device. So what is Google Glass? Click here to read about it! |

Crotchety Olde Geek #2: "Vegas, Mother-in-Laws and Systems"
| | |
Bob here. How many times do you get the opportunity to tell a tale involving Las Vegas, mini-bars, condoms, Mother-in-laws and system design?

Server 2012 Hyper-V / NIC Team Oddity
| |
Kevin here. I'm stuck in the car for a two-hour drive to Columbus, so I might as well write a blog post about a recent experience I had with Server 2012 and NIC teaming. Microsoft's Server 2012 comes jam-packed full of great tools and features like storage spaces, the next version of Hyper-V, SMB 3.0 and integrated NIC teaming. But I recently came across a very odd behavior with the new NIC teaming and took me (off and on) about a month to resolve. It was for a personal project so I didn't sink much time into it. I then had the exact same issue at a client location and solved their issue within minutes. Hopefully this blog post will save someone some frustration! So, NIC teaming. What is it? It's the ability to join multiple network cards together to either accomplish greater redundancy or increased performance. So if you had four 1 gigabit network cards, you could gain a theoretical 4Gb connection to that server or make it so if two of the four were disconnected, your server would still be accessible. If those connections were spread among four different switches, one of those switches fails, clients on the other switches are (probably) not affected. Overall it's a good thing to try to implement into your environment, and with every new Windows Server 2012 deployment we do at Simplex we try to leverage this technology into our clients infrastructure.

Brandon's Glassic Tales: An Introduction to Google Glass
| |
Hey folks, Brandon here.
Two weeks ago I was in New York picking up Google Glass after being accepted into the Glass Explorer program. Essentially, I am beta testing the product. Looking for bugs, showing it off, trying new things, and maybe doing some development.
Consistently the number 1 question I get asked is "What is that!?" So I wanted to make it a bit easier and just make a video and show you all!
Here is the first video about Glass. I'll go over some basics at first, and maybe I can do some more in depth videos in the near future.
If you have any questions about the device, let us know. Maybe some things you would like to see or have answered. Feedback is encouraged!

| Plain Funny #62 | |
Musical or Explosions? That's the question I faced here this month.
And the answer?! Doggoneit! I want both!!
First of all, when I think about the superhero "Wolverine" I think about puppets and musical numbers:
 | | Wolverine - The Musical! |
and past that, whenever I see a science-fiction or fantasy movie, I want things to blow up, and I want the hero and/or villain to make some grandiose statement. The rest of the movie? eh...no big deal to me. And I don't want to sit though the rest of the movie. Oh, and I want to slam 50 or so movies together into a 5 minute explosion!
