Plain Funny #59
Issue: #61May /2013

Greetings!

Bob
Another month goes by. Business continues to grow, and we're seeing a lot of interest in services, especially from manufacturing firms. Companies that had to skim, shrink and do without for several years now find themselves needing to upgrade, and quickly.

And we're playing more and more with the new stuff. Server 2012, SQL 2012, SharePoint 2013, the new Office 365. Windows 8, Office 2013. New toys.

Speaking of toys, a lot of companies are trying to deal with the dilemma of what tablets work best for their business. Are you in that same boat? If so, make sure to check out our next Lunchinar. We'll show hands on how these tablets work, side by side. iPads, Windows, Droid. Should be fun.

Not as fun as our first live tech webinar, presented by Sarah Dutkiewicz on "Administrating Office 365 using PowerShell." About 20 folks took advantage of that (it'll be online by this weekend, check our blog for when it gets up there). Interested in more of that type of event? Let me know!

April also saw me out at several schools talking about various IT career issues (among other things). I don't get to do that stuff as much as I'd like.

As to our videos this month, make sure to check out the "Boy and his Atom" film. Wow, that's absolutely incredible what they were able to do. When you think about using this technology to miniaturize storage devices, it's mind-boggling.

By the way, are you part of an organization that has folks drop by for presentations (not sales pitches)? If so, I'd be happy to stop by and talk about technology and business. Just let me know!

I also have some additional news. More awards. New personnel. New business services. But we're just a day or two early for each of those.

Check our blog for updates, or see you next month!

Later!
Bob

tablets Free Lunchinar!

We've heard of all of them:  iPads, Droids, and now Windows tablets.  But which one is best for your business?  Which has the best features?  Which one is the easiest to support?

How to decide?  Let Simplex-IT be your guide!  We'll be taking a tablet from each major line (iPad, Droid, Windows and Windows RT) through the paces.  We'll show how each tablet can (or can't) accomplish what today's business user needs to be able to do.

10 Underused Office Features

It's no secret. Microsoft Office is so feature-packed, most users barely scratch the surface of its functionality. In this article by Susan Harkins on TechRepublic, you can see if you're using Office apps to their full potential.

There's a saying that 80 percent of users will use only 20 percent of an application's features. This is probably true of most Office users because they don't know the features exist. Once they see the features in action, they put them to use. Here are 10 features that are among the most underused but easy-to-implement features in the Office suite. Most applications share many of these features; those that are application-specific are noted.

Bob goes Back to School(s)!

SchoolThe last week in April was my Week in Education. As many of you know, I'm an opinionated so-and-so. And I'm not afraid to share it loudly, frequently. And I'm happy to help out schools where I can. I'm sure that part of the follow up that instructors have with their students after I leave is something along the lines of "see, that could be you if you don't pay attention." And I'm ok with that. I can be a cautionary tale with the best of 'em.

In one week, I:

John here. By now, you've heard at least something about the newest Microsoft operating system, Windows 8. This article is aimed at those who would like to know more!

First, I've discovered a great one-page resource that provides nearly a hundred informational links that cover such topics as:

  • What's New in Windows 8 and why should I care?
  • Will Windows 8 work in my environment? How do I prepare?
  • How can I make deployment faster and easier?
  • How do I manage risk and maintain control?
  • Where can I find help and support?

Mitigating Risk: Why Sticking with Windows XP is a Bad Idea

On April 8, 2014, official support for Microsoft's highly successful XP operating system will end. As business and IT professionals, I'm going to suggest you spend a little time thinking about what this is going to mean for your organization - if you haven't done so already.

In May, 2012, IDC (International Data Corporation) authored a White Paper with the above title, strongly suggesting that moving to a modern operating system like Windows 7, or even Windows 8, would be a smart idea from several perspectives, not the least of which is financial. As the premier global provider of market intelligence, advisory services, and events for the information technology, telecommunications and consumer technology markets, it's fair to say they bring a lot of expertise to the table.

Plain Funny #59

One of the movies I'm eagerly awaiting is Zack Snyder's Superman movie, "Man of Steel."  If you need a bit of Super...uh...something to help you pass the time waiting, we give you...SuperPup.  A pilot back in the late 50's filmed on the same set as the iconic Superman TV series, but with...umm...just watch:

the aventures of superpup part one
the aventures of superpup part one

the adventures of superpup part two

the adventures of superpup part two

Ok, ok...we can't just give you this.  We need to raise the level just a little bit.  How little, you ask?

How about a movie created literally using just a few carbon atoms?

The frame size of this movie, courtesy of IBM is literally less than 1/1000th the width of a human hair.

Wow.
