Plain Funny #57
Issue: #59March/2013

Greetings!

Bob

Howdy. Opening article is a bunch of random thoughts. If you're looking for continuity, look no further (because it isn't here).

Ok. March. March Madness. Marching to the beat of a different drum. March right in! Fredric March. March of Dimes.

Speaking of Fredric March, if you want to see a great movie, check of "The Best Years of Our Lives." Before computer generated graphics, before expensive special effects. Heck, before color movies were the norm.

Office 2013 is now out. Read our blog about the licensing changes. Bottom line is this: Microsoft doesn't want you to buy software one license, one version at a time. They want you to either buy a lot (volume licensing) or to essentially rent the software (through Office 365).

One of the ways they're encouraging this is making it more expensive and difficult to do it the other way (buying a single license).

Want to know more? Check out our free Lunchinar this month where we'll talk about the new versions of Office 2013 and Office 365.

Google, Apple and Microsoft are all making significant shifts this year in how they do business. Although we might not see the impact immediately, ultimately I suspect they'll be game-changers. And they (mostly) have nothing to do with their products.

We're adding a full-time Junior Network technician (see article later in this issue).

We've actually been without water (or minimal) for most of this week. Turns out there's a tank underneath our parking lot, and it's cracked/busted. Not fixed yet.

My wife is heading to Florida to spend a week with her dad. My immediate thoughts regarding the weekend? "I can get a lot of work done!!" My second thought? I can finally crank up the TV, turn out the lights and watch the Metropolitan Opera's complete Wagner's "Der ring des Nibelungen." Common translation: The Ring. More common translation: the opera that served as Bugs Bunny's "Kill da wabbit."  It's not the original video..in fact it's kinda strange.  But you'll get the idea.

I'm not a huge opera fan. But this 12-hour plus performance...wow.

Later!

Microsoft:  The Name Game

Microsoft loves to name things and do it in a way that confuses the heck out of people (how do you shut your computer down? First click on the button labelled "Start").

Key Microsoft confusion this month? Regarding Windows Tablets. The terms "Surface," "Pro," and "RT."

(and maybe Office 365)

Hey everyone, Brandon here! There have been some recent issues regarding iOS and Exchange lately and I just wanted to take a minute and clarify some things.

So in late January Apple began pushing out a small update to the iOS 6.1. This went to devices including the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Including some bug fixes, it also created a few (slightly larger) problems.

It turns out that the update doesn't work well...(click here for more)

The Geek and the Plumber

Leak Bob here. I'm going to make a bit of a stretch here in terms of three declarative statements.

    1. 1>   Everyone who reads this eNewsletter is an idiot. At something.
  1. 2>   Everyone who reads this eNewsletter is a genius. At something.

3>  The more successful and happier (not necessarily the same) of us know where our own personal idiots and geniuses lie.

Microsoft's New Office Licensing

Changes in Response to a Changing World

If you bought Windows XP and Office 2003 10 years ago and you haven't upgraded your software since then, Microsoft wants you to know they're not very happy with you. First of all, you've been standing in the way of progress - sticking to your slower applications with fewer features, clinging to the familiar, long workarounds that you've become accustomed to. All while new technology has continued to make dramatic advances in performance and productivity.

But they are also not happy that you have resisted contributing anything to their revenue stream over the last decade. And this is despite the fact that you continue to receive ongoing value from their hard work. Well, some changes are on the horizon that are going to motivate us to reconsider where our priorities are relative to the technologies that we consume on a daily basis and that make our world go round.

We're Hiring (again)!

Junior Network Engineer

Simplex-IT, a growing IT Managed Services Provider (and Microsoft Silver Partner and Cloud Champion) in Hudson, OH is looking to add an additional (full-time) Junior Network Engineer.  You *must* have experience troubleshooting Windows Desktop applications.  Desktop support (XP and Windows 7) absolutely.  Network Monitoring?  That'd be nice.  Active Directory experience is a plus.  You know how to work with end users both in person and over the phone.  Certifications are nice, but abilities count for more.

You also care about customers and end users.  "Play well with others."  Document your work well.  Want to pick up new skills and experience?  This is the place for you.

If you haven't noticed, the PC marketplace is changing. Desktop PCs with a Windows operating system are no longer king of the hill. Smartphones and tablets are the new 'talk of the town' and Ultrabooks are emerging as the sweetheart in the world of laptops.

Add to this mix the recent release of Windows 8 and the new Microsoft tablets, the Surface RT and the Surface Pro, and speculation is rampant on how the computing landscape is changing. The 'Computer Games of 2013' are off with a bang!

Plain Funny #57

Yup.  Sometimes we just have to watch kittens.

After all, that's what the Internet was created for, right?  Back in the day, a kittens cuteness was temporary.  If you saw a kitten doing something cute, you couldn't go out and demonstrate it to the world (with the exception of Richard Simmons.  I'm pretty sure a kitten with scotch tape on its paw was his role model of behaviour).  And describing the behavior...face it.  Describing the cute things your kitten did is a one-way ticket to lame city.

Anywho.  For this video, actually I think the soundtrack is almost as impressive as the kitten.
