Plain Funny #56
Issue: #58February/2013

Greetings!

Bob

One down, 11 to go. But that's ok. We get a breather because this one coming up is shorter. But it is full of B-list holidays. Groundhogs, love-tipped arrows and Presidential birthdays make up the celebratory lot (No, I'm not bringing up Chinese New Year, Mardi Gras or even Daisy Gatson Bates Day...oh, wait...I just did...).

We have Super Bowl Sunday, which of course have us ready to eat a lot and watch commercials willingly for the only night of the year (the commercial part...eat a lot is pretty much a de facto norm).

Just like last year.

Business is going very well here, hope your world is rocking as well. Our January 2013 outpaced our 2012, which outpaced our 2011, which...ok, you get the idea. We're implementing projects with the newer technologies of Server 2012, SQL 2012, SharePoint 2013, Office 2013...

Just like last year (the specific technologies change, of course).

We're talking about Windows Tablets with more of our clients. Since we've been using Windows 8 tables for almost a year, we've got some good experiences to share.

Talked a potential client out of working with us. Took about an hour on the phone. The person was convinced that we could deliver a solution for a couple thousand dollars. Which we definitely could have. But he had a much lower cost (and better) solution already on site and in place. He just didn't know he had it. His current technology partner could implement it (with a gentle nudge from us) at almost zero cost.

Speaking to about 30 people at the Streetsboro Chamber of Commerce meeting and another 35 or so people at our monthly Lunchinar meeting about IT trends for 2013.

Starting our fifth (I think) year of lunchinars.

I'd say more, but I've gotta get back to work.  Sorry this issue is a little thin.  We'll do better next month!

Later!

Bob

Simplex-IT Invites You to Our Next Free Lunchinar: "The ABCs of Working Remotely!"

Simplex-IT's February Lunchinar focuses on the technologies which more and more companies are taking advantage of to allow their employees to work from home (or other remote office).

Join our own Bob Coppedge as he explores the liberating and wide ranging capabilities of Unified Communications, Email Anywhere (and on almost any device), internet-enabled applications, cloud storage and more.

Gone are the days when workers are tied to their office and the data that resides there. Finally, we're free at last!

How *Not* to Convert Your Network to Wireless

Funny story (now).  Yesterday a truck was attempting to leave our offices. Apparently the driver was a bit of a fan of the movie "Top Gun."  Looking around for what would pass as an aircraft carrier's arresting cable, the driver snagged cables running from a nearby telephone pole directly into our offices.

The cables were dragged by the truck before the driver could bring his rig to a halt.  Amazingly enough, the cables seem to have not disconnected from either the building or the nearby telephone pole.

Microsoft's Surface Pro Is Coming: February 9th!

It's official! Microsoft has announced their Surface Pro tablet will be made available to the public on February 9. As Ed Bott reports in his article on ZDNet.com you will be able to purchase the Pro at Microsoft's brick-and-mortar stores, its online store, Best Buy and Staples in the U.S. The starting price will be $899 w/64GB of memory. Additional options and add-ons are available.

The Surface Pro will be a little thicker and slightly heavier (by a half pound) than its less expensive sibling, the Surface RT, and Office will not be included (though you can add it). But because the Pro will use Intel's Ivy Bridge i5 processor it will be capable of running just about any Windows desktop application. One possible down side? Battery life will be about half that of the Surface RT. Hey, there's no free lunch!

Once again, as he has done at the beginning of every year, Simplex-IT's Bob Coppedge dusted off his magical crystal ball and peered into the future. Nearly 30 attendees of our January Lunchinar listened as he discussed his prognostications of the emerging IT technologies he believes will have an impact on small-to-medium businesses in the coming year.

We are pleased to report that presentation is now available on our YouTube channel for you to enjoy from the privacy and comfort of your office. Just click on the thumbnail below, kick up your feet and take a magic carpet ride with Bob. It'll be just like you were there - except you won't get to enjoy the free lunch! Enjoy!

Want Better Organizational Collaboration? Check Out Microsoft OneNote!

The hidden gem in Microsoft Office 2010 (and 2013!) is OneNote. For many who have discovered its power and flexibility they often laud it as their favorite program! Why haven't more people discovered it and what is it you can do with it?

I believe people have not warmed up to OneNote for basically two reasons: 1) It's different from most programs we work with, and 2) it's human nature for people to resist change and learn new things. But if you're willing to walk outside your comfort zone and open yourself to spending some time, OneNote may be one of the most powerful programs yet to help propel your productivity to new heights.

Plain Funny #56

Ok, there are several ways to consider this. We're not doing just one video. We're not even doing just two. We're doing...three. Yes three videos. Whether that's because they were just so fantastic or none of them screamed to us "pick me" beyond the rest.

First of all. What the heck is a Bronie (the is something of a sequel from last month)?

Let's Go and Meet the Bronies

Second of all, I don't understand "Oppa Gangnam Style." I'm not going to understand it anytime soon (it'll be back with the Macarena, Tiny Tim and Newt Gingrich by the time I do). But if this was created the way I used to create this sort of thing, somebody has waaaaaaaay too much time on their hands.

Oppa Gangnam Style in paper!

Finally...well, I just to know what the Jedi Cats were up to.
