Greetings!
2012 is gone. I can't recall a year where so many people have held such wildly differing opinions as to whether this was a good year or a bad year. The exception, of course, being fans of the Cleveland Browns. There it's unanimous!
The big news, of course, is the discovery that the Mayans were the creators of the longest-developing practical joke in all of history. The patience in terms of how long it took to play out this whole doomsday/calendar thing is unbelievable.
The example I can give would be Henny Youngman, saying "Take my wife...please." Except the space between "wife" and "please" would need to be oh, about seven thousand years or so.
Comedy...it's all about the timing.
And speaking of timing, we had a great time last month at our Lunchinar raising almost seven hundred dollars for our second annual "Geek Raffle" for the Hattie Larlham Foundation. The 30 or so folks who attended purchased three hundred and forty dollars of raffle tickets, which we happily matched. Thanks to ThinkGeek.com, we were able to provide a lot of geekish raffle prizes.
This month we're back to more serious stuff (at least for me). We seem to be developing some annual patterns to our Lunchinars. July is Social Media, August is our picnic. December our Geek Raffle. And January is where we put our "Carnac the Magnificent" hats on and make our "IT/Tech Predictions for 2013."
We'll continue to partner up with others when it seems to fit, bringing in outside talent where it makes sense. But we will also continue our practice of no dogs and ponies. In other words, our Lunchinars will continue to emphasize the sharing of our knowledge, and NOT sales pitches!
Back to 2012. A good year for us. A year of change, certainly. Double-digit growth again, although (somewhat purposefully) not as much as in 2011 or 2010. But take a look at the number of folks in the company holiday brunch picture (that's employees and their families)!
We needed to start making the transition... (Click here for more)

Simplex-IT Invites You to Our Next Free Lunchinar: "IT Trends for 2013!"
| |
Once again, Simplex-IT's Bob Coppedge will take center stage at our 1st free Lunchinar of 2013 to prognosticate on the coming IT Trends in the New Year. For as the early Greek philosopher Heraclitus is quoted, "There is nothing permanent except change." And nowhere is change more in evidence than in the IT industry.
Having just recently returned from an exclusive Dealer Summit at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington, Bob will, of course, be sharing his first person insights on the many exciting changes taking place at the world's #1 software vendor.

2nd Annual Geek Charity Raffle a Great Success!
| |
Simplex-IT held our 2nd Annual Geek Charity Raffle on December 19, 2012 and we're happy to report the Event exceeded our expectations, both in attendance and funds raised.
As we did last year, in place of our regularly scheduled monthly Lunchinar we invited business executives, clients, IT professionals and any other interested parties to join us for a free lunch. Instead of our typical business presentation, however, we raffled off numerous Geek oriented prizes, the proceeds of which went to benefit the Hattie Larlham Foundation.

Back in October, Microsoft opened a store (a kiosk on steroids, really) in Beachwood Place. At the time it was identified as a temporary seasonal store.
Well, no longer (thanks to Jim Evans who pointed this out on Facebook). Microsoft announced back on December 26th plans for opening full retail stores in six locations.

You Don't Really Need a Start Menu in Windows 8!
With Christmas right around the corner and the suspicion that a lot of people may be going into withdrawal because Windows 8 that comes on their new computer lacks a Start menu, I thought this article might be of some help.
Much has been said and written about Windows 8 lack of a Start menu. Greg Schultz, in his Tech Republic blog (you can read the entire post HERE) gives a host of tips on how to navigate the new interface - using the mouse or the keyboard.

Bob, Surface, Windows 8 and the GCPCUG
Back on 8 December I had the fun experience of talking about Microsoft's new Surface tablets at the GCPCUG monthly meeting. Since the topic of the whole meeting was holiday gift ideas, folks wanted to know how the Surface stacked up as a stocking stuffer (ok, big stocking).
It does seem that whenever I talk about Windows 8, especially tablets, there are a few questions that always seem to come up.

How a Poor Backup Plan Cost BYU Millions!
| |
Just the headline of this post is enough to make you say "Ouch"! Or it should be. From a post I just ran across, it's a story that is too familiar, yet bears repeating.
"May 28th, 2012 became a nightmare for Brigham Young University-a nightmare that will likely continue past Christmas into 2013 and beyond. On that fateful Memorial Day, a failed software upgrade on BYU's primary server system effectively destroyed hundreds of terabytes of data-including payroll, research, and student data. Backup systems failed to recover most of the data."

| Plain Funny #55 | |
Yes, I'm a Trekkie, or Trekker, or...well, I like Star Trek. And I'm waiting for the next movie, "Star Trek Into Darkness." My wife and I just saw "Les Miserables" (not a Star Trek movie, btw), and saw the trailer.
Can't link to it like we can YouTube videos, but click here and click on the Teaser to see it.
Ok, I've got a couple of comments (why the fixation with jumping off from high places?), but overall looks good.
But you know what it's missing. Ponies. Not big ones, but little ones.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you..."My Little Trek Into Darkness:"
