Plain Funny #54
Issue: #56December/2012

Greetings!

Bob

The holidays are here. And if your experiences are anything like mine, you realize, in your heart of hearts, that the world is coming to an end. Live, on cable TV.

Ok, by now we're all listening day by day to the news of the "Fiscal Cliff." Should our Congress not get together and agree on some critical budget issues, then blah-blah-blah, we're doomed.

But that's ok, because according to the Mayan doomsayers, we'll already be long gone (21 December). Which really means that Congress already knows we're doomed, they're just trying to keep our minds off of it (which is pretty nice of them, don't you think?).

Then there the National Geographic channel. Yup, the freakin' National Geographic channel. I'm writing this on Sunday night, and somehow ended up watching the NatGeo channels' new two-hour program "Evacuate Earth." It's a heartwarming story about how the Earth will deal with a Neutron Star coming, forcing us to...wait for it..."Evacuate Earth."

Following this program? "2012: Countdown to Armageddon - The End is Near." Imagine my shock to find out it's not a musical.

And every Tuesday evening? A new season of "Doomsday Preppers."

And don't get me started about Twinkies (see video clip towards the end of this issue).

Oy Freakin' Vey.

Thankfully, I don't think there's a high likelihood of these things happening (ok, I'm hoping regarding the Cliff). I remember back in the late 70's listening to a prophet who claimed to be an emissary of the Galactic Federation discussing the oncoming global apocalypse. And anyone remember Y2k? Or Disco??

Honestly, I'm grateful for all the success that Simplex-IT has had over the past 5 years. My wife Julie and I were looking at the guest list of 20 employees and their friends and family joining us for our annual holiday brunch. This year we've added Michelle Brugmann (whose daughter, it seems, wears a frog on her head during the winter) and Steve Buchwald (no evidence of frog-wearing...yet) as additional staff positions. Kevin and Sarah Dutkiewicz added Logan, albeit through more organic traditional methods (the whole birthing thing). In addition we've added more than a dozen additional organizations who trust Simplex-IT to help manage their IT resources.

And I sincerely hope 2013, in spite of the various indicators of doom, will be a great year for all of us.

With or without Twinkies.

Internet Explorer 10 preview available for Windows 7 Systems.

Kevin here. I'm usually a lazy, lazy man and don't spend the 15 seconds it takes to install other browsers, so I'll just stick to Internet Explorer. I just learned that as of November 13th, Microsoft released a "release preview" version or IE10 for Windows 7. IE10 gives enhanced support for HTML5 (IE9's is rather primitive/stripped down), built in Adobe Flash integration, and a new feature called "Flip Ahead". It's turned off by default (huh?) but if you were unlazy and turned it on, you could flip through pages with a next page button.

Bob here. Just a note that I'll be one of the many presenters on Saturday, December 8th's meeting of the Greater Cleveland PC Users Group and Cleveland Digital Publishing Group. We'll be talking about Holiday Tech Gadgets V.

The meeting will include a raffle that will benefit the Salvation Army and a ton of raffle prizes. The meeting is free and open to the public!

On the Surface: Microsoft's New Tablet(s) - A Winning Strategy?

There's no question that tablets are the rage these days - and, so far, Apple appears to be hanging on to its lead, despite the flood of competing new devices by multiple vendors. But Microsoft's new tablet(s) appear poised to shake things up, perhaps more than a little.

As you can read in this blog article by Curt Hall, Microsoft is not only going to be competing in the same price arena as the iPad, in early 2013 it will be introducing a Surfact tablet that is fully ready for the Enterprise. And this is where Microsoft has, of course, held a commanding position in the marketplace.

There's Somthing Happening here - Smart Devices Update

According to this November 6, 2012 press release  by Gartner (Gartner, Inc. - NYSE: IT - the world's leading information technology research and advisory company)  "In 2016, two-thirds of the mobile workforce will own a smartphone, and 40 percent of the workforce will be mobile...Tablets will be the key accelerator to mobility.

Gartner estimates that in 2012 purchases of tablets by businesses will reach 13 million units and will more than triple by 2016, to reach 53 million units."

Plain Funny #54

(Two-fer time again!)

Firsy of all, I like science fiction movies.  Good ones, anyways.  And yes, I get to choose which ones are good ones.

Finally, everybody's been crying about the loss of Twinkies, but without any reall reason why we'll be missing them.  Of course, a Twinkie makes a fine unit of measure:

That's a Big Twinkie...
That's a Big Twinkie...
