Plain Funny #53
Issue: #55November/2012

Greetings!

Bob

It's November. We're sick of the elections. We're now sick of the weather. And we know, we just know, that soon we're going to be sick of the holidays.

We're going to be sick of hearing about the "fiscal cliff." We're going to be sick of the Browns (what, not already?!). We're going to be sick of LeBron. We're going to be sick of whatever the heck a honey-boo-boo is (I don't know either).

We'll be sick of having to deal with IT issues. Sick of somebody wondering why their iPad won't do what someone else's Windows Surface table will do. Sick of wondering why there aren't many apps built for the Surface.

We'll be sick of whiners who are upset that the other guy won/stole the election. Sick of how our guy is backing off of his original claims/promises. Sick of how the news organizations are already talking about 2016.

We'll be sick of people talking about the upcoming Mayan catastrophe in December, with the "will it happen? wink-wink" attitude.

Will we be starting to get sick of vampires? I think that's already happening. Maybe it'll be in full swing. And don't get comfortable, zombies. I hear your days are numbered too.

Maybe there will be things to look forward to as well.

I'm looking forward to working with our latest additions to the staff. Michelle joined us as the newest Office Manager, and Jeff as the newest network technician (or whatever title you want to give them, we're not big on titles here). Michelle and Jeff join Kevin, Steve, Brandon, John, Doug, Cyndee and I (along with occasional support from Sam and Sarah). The office is starting to look a little crowded. We may have to start looking for new digs within the next year or so.

The addition of Windows 8 and Office 2013 give us some great new opportunities as well. Those who know me know I don't harp about the latest and greatest without good reason.

I'm also looking forward to our second annual Geek raffle that will take place on December 19th at Hattie's café. We geeks here will be selecting various geek inspired raffle prizes (here's my favorite from last year) raising money for a good cause.

Bottom line? Plenty of stuff to be sick of, plenty of stuff to look forward to.

Business as usual, I'd say<g>!

Simplex-IT Invites You to Our next Free Lunchinar: "When Should You Upgrade Your IT?"

Traditional wisdom suggests "If it's not broke, don't fix it." But it's not quite that black-and-white when it comes to your IT. Are you compromising productivity, efficiency and security, for example, by continuing to run an operating system that's over 10 years old? When do the benefits outweigh the costs of upgrading your hardware and software to the latest versions? And how do you know when the time is right?

Get the answer to these compelling questions and more from Simplex-IT's own Bob Coppedge at our next free Lunchinar.

Halloween and taking the plunge

Bob here. I'm writing this on the evening of the 31st. Halloween. Of course, much of the east coast is still only beginning the long recovery process from Hurricane Sandy. The election is (thankfully) less than a week away. Several Simplex-IT customers lost their power and/or phones and/or Internet connection.

As of this time we've still got one customer that has no internet, although we've restored their email and some other processes through creative solutions.

Even Halloween wasn't spared.

Microsoft store up and running!

Microsoft Store in Beachwood  Ok, the Microsoft store is now open. And by open, I mean waaaaay open. As in open in the middle of the floor of the mall open.

My wife and I visited the new Microsoft store in Beachwood Mall last weekend, just after it opened. And it was packed, both with Microsoft folks and people interested in the new Surface RT tablet. At least a dozen...

Microsoft's New Free Email Service

John here

Lately all the news from Microsoft seems to be about their new operating system, Windows 8, their new Surface tablets and Office 2013. But another development has taken place which is also worthy of recognition. The venerable free email service - Hotmail.com - has received a major upgrade and is now being rebranded as Outlook.com. It deserves more than just a passing look, even if you have a free account from another vendor (think Google or Yahoo).

And, of course, the impact of the new Windows 8 on the latest generation of tablets, led by the Microsoft Slate, will be discussed as well.

We hope you enjoy it!

Server Share Migrations and Aliasing

Hello, Kevin here.  A common task any system administrator comes is migrating data from one server. Whether from retirement, space, or hardware failure, it can sometimes prove difficult to update the hordes of shortcuts pointing to old share locations. There is thankfully an easy way around this though NetBIOS aliasing.

The basic idea is to make your new file hold appear as the same name as the old one. So if your old server was named SERVER1 and the new one SERVER2, we can apply the SERVER1 name to SERVER2 and any shortcuts referencing SERVER1 will work just like they always have.

Office 2013 goes RTM!

Bob hereWe've been blogging about it, demoing it, talking about it at Lunchinars.

Microsoft is going to be rolling out a lot of stuff in the near future.  And changes, they are a-comin'.

The latest is Microsoft's Office 2013, which just went RTM.  This (Release To Manufacturing) means that the coding and testing are done, now it's time to get ready to deploy the product.

Well, sorta.  It depends on your current relationship with Microsoft.  If your organization has software assurance (which gives you access to the latest version of the software without additional cost) you'll be able to get Office 2013 mid-November.

October 26th was the date for Windows 8, Surface tablets, and Microsoft's Beachwood store

Still not sure what to give kids who come trick or treating in your neighborhood?  Microsoft is going to give you some high-priced treats...and just in the nick of time.

Microsoft announced that most of their temporary ("Pop-up") stores opened on Friday, October 26th.  This includes the only one in Ohio, located at the Beachwood Place mall.

Microsoft is still a little coy about the specifics of the stores as well as what seems to be the primary flagship product, the Microsoft Surface Windows 8 RT-based ARM tablet.

Blog updates from Simplex-IT over the past month

Remember to check out our blog:

Plain Funny #53

It's a twofer month.  Yup, we've got two videos to share.

Spoiler alert.   The first video is a political ad.  I know, I know, we're sick of them two.  But it talks about an issue that just hasn't been addressed enough.

I'm talking about Zombies.  Yup, and which candidate is more likely to bring about the Zombie Apocalypse.  Here it from Joss Whedon ("The Avengers,"  "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Firefly"):

(Warning.  Safe for work, but decidedly partisan)

Whedon On Romney
Whedon On Romney

Ok, ok...you'd rather stay completely away from politics.  I understand.  So let's change the subject.  We've often heard the term "an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?"  For the most part it's a philosophical question.

But what happens when "a stoppable force meets an immovable object?"  That would be this:
