From the Executive Director
|
Dear Pinemere Families, Summer 2012 seems like it was just yesterday, but everyone is back to school, the Jewish holidays are over, the leaves are beginning to fall, and we are now in full gear getting ready for the summer of 2013. Although the summer is our main focus, we still keep ourselves very busy during the year. Here are a few highlights of what we have been up to since camp ended on August 12th. 1. Pinemere alumni had a wonderful "banquet" on October 21st, celebrating Pinemere's 70th birthday! Please see below for pictures and details of the day. The alumni loved seeing their canoe paddles. Keith helped take all of them off of the Rec Hall wall and we brought them to Philadelphia to put on display. Don't worry, they will all be back in place by the summer! We had 17 CITs, CIT-TWOs, and JCs of 2012 who volunteered to help us with the event. They did a wonderful job. Please join me in thanking: Noa Ayash, Or Ayash, Rachel Bloom, Ellen Chinn, Aliya Cohen, Shira Ferman, Nadia Gartman, Sam Helias, Rachel Hockman, Jordan Katz, Mike Miller, Talia Prusky, Sarah Raizen, Izzy Randazzo, Drea Sobel, Mahri Stewart and Jake Weiner. 2. The Foundation for Jewish Camp (FJC) offers high quality professional development courses and conferences for both summer staff and our professional staff. I was at my 5th Executive Leadership Institute session last week with 14 other Jewish camp directors from all over the United States. Besides sharing best practices, we also learn from high quality faculty about the business end of camp management, recruitment, leadership development, Board development, fundraising, etc. I always come back from these sessions invigorated and excited to try out all of the new things I have learned. Ezra is also fortunate to be involved in the FJC's Yitro program which is for 20 Assistant Directors of Jewish camps. His next session is next week in California, and I will be joining him for two days of that conference. We are both attending the Jewish Community Center Association's (JCCA) resident camp conference which will also be taking place next week in California (in Malibu!). Lastly, I will be attending the Grinspoon conference and an American Camp Association (ACA) conference after my return from California. The Grinspoon Institute for Jewish Philanthropy provides mentoring and consulting services for nonprofit Jewish camps and focuses on fundraising and leadership development. It's going to be a very busy two weeks for me, but we are fortunate to receive the support and learn from so many quality organizations. 3. We are having record breaking camper enrollment this year. Our special Pinemere secret is getting out to more and more families. I am sure that this is a sign of what will be another excellent season. I thank you for continuing to share the good word about Pinemere to your friends and relatives. Please continue to do so - word of mouth is our best advertisement!
4. We will have our first meeting of our Parent Ambassador Committee (PAC) in November. Our parent ambassadors are an invaluable part of our Pinemere community. They each distribute Pinemere flyers, host parlor meetings, call prospective families and encourage people to sign up for camp. If you are interested in serving as a parent ambassador, please contact me and I will give you full details of what the job entails. Our current group is a wonderful group of people who all share their love of Pinemere and commitment to help Pinemere grow.
5. During winter break, Ezra, Meir, Halel (a member of our Israeli staff) and I will be accompanying 23 campers to the Alps in Italy for a winter ski camp with our partner camp from Germany. We are very excited to see the similarities and differences between our camps, and look forward to seeing some of our new friends who we met this past summer during their stay at Pinemere. Stay tuned for pictures in January of all of us skiing (that should be a great sight!).
6. We thank everyone who completed our survey at the end of the summer. In a few weeks, we will be receiving the results and we will be happy to share them with you in our next ePinemerit. This survey is an invaluable tool which allows us to learn about the areas where we need improvement and where we are doing an excellent job.
We are always looking for families to host an information session. All you have to do is pick a date, invite at least one family, and we do the rest! What could be bad about talking all about camp during the year! Please let me know if you are interested. We are always happy to see our families during the year.

70th Anniversary "Banquet" Recap
| |

On October 21, over 150 alumni joined in Philadelphia to celebrate Pinemere's 70th anniversary with a "Banquet." We were thrilled to have representatives from every Pinemere era since 1942 up to 2012. Attendees took a trip down memory lane reminiscing about Turkey Roast, Canoe Trips, Polar Bear Club, and much more. A definite highlight was having "minstrels" from years past lead us in a "Saturday postponed to Sunday - Camp Sing" featuring old favorites!

Pinemere In Your Neighborhood

Over the coming weeks, we'd love to see you as we make the rounds to our camp communities to share the energy and excitement of camp! Our best advertising is person-to-person referrals from our camp families- please spread the word to your friends and around your town when we are coming to your neighborhood. We love to see all our camp families during the year, so come on out and see us, and bring one or more friends to hear about camp too!

Summer 2013 Registration and Referral Incentives
| |
Summer 2013 registration is well underway. We had a fantastic response to the "pick-up special" and early enrollment is higher than ever!! If you haven't signed up yet, it is very simple: just log in to CampMinder as you did previously to view photos and complete forms, and click on "Camper Application." Select the appropriate session(s), make any changes to your information from last year, click submit, and that's it!
We are also continuing with the referral incentives from last year. For each new family you refer to Pinemere Camp that registers, you will receive a $100 check at the end of the summer! Refer 10 new families and your family will receive a free camp tuition!

One Happy Camper Incentive Grants | |

Through the generosity of the Foundation for Jewish Camp and local communities, we are proud to be a partner of the One Happy Camper incentive grant, which provides $1000 for first-time overnight Jewish campers.
Many communities also provide a $750 grant for the second summer. If you are eligible, you must apply (for the second year as well!) directly at www.onehappycamper.org. Please contact us with any questions. |
|
PJ Goes to Camp Incentive Grants
| |
PJ Goes to Camp offers incentive grants up to $1,000 to PJ Library families who wish to enroll their children in a nonprofit Jewish overnight camp for the first time.
Made possible by the Foundation for Jewish Camp's One Happy Camper program and the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, this offer is available on a first-come, first-served basis to PJ Library families who might not otherwise be eligible for their community's One Happy Camper program.
(PJ Library children fortunate enough to live in communities whose Federations sponsor a One Happy Camper program will receive a grant from their community sponsor rather than a PJ Goes to Camp grant.)
IMPORTANT NOTE: This year's program is set to open mid-November, and there are only 100 grants for campers who currently attend Jewish Day schools. To learn more, please visit www.pjlibrary.org/pjgtc or contact Kirstin at Kirstin@hgf.org.
