Documentary makers looking for interviewees
![]()
Did you know that Sandy Blvd. has a long history as a "roadway"? Even before horseless-carriages it was a trail for the native people. Another interesting bit of trivia relating to Sandy Blvd. is that the Smithsonian has a full-sized model of the Breslin Wallace Dealership as part of their permanent exhibit "America on the Move" at the National Museum of American History. According to an article from the Star News: "The Sandy Boulevard portion of the exhibit is 54 feet long. Half of the exhibit is a scaled-down replica of the Wallace Buick dealership, which is still in business today at 3434 N.E. Sandy Blvd. as Breslin and Wallace Buick Pontiac GMC." (Read the full article about the model.)
I learned this from Andrew Maxwell, founder of LumiCarta Laboratories. Maxwell's interest in history and chats with neighbors and business owners was the inspiration for a documentary that is being made about Sandy Blvd. The film will feature the road from the portion at 84 freeway to the end in the SE industrial area. "We are gathering stories about its history, and talking to people who have visions for it's future." They are also looking through historic and old images of Sandy Blvd. Do you have stories for the documentarians? Please contact Andrew at andrew@lumicarta.com or 503-739-5720. |

This Wednesday da Vinci students will be raising money through Run for the Arts. Students will be on the blacktop and the back field racking up walking or running laps to raise money for artist residencies and performances. In the past we have hired guest choreographers and play directors, funded the after school Jazz Ensemble, a during the day Film Making class, a school day African Mud-Cloth workshop, spoken word performances and more!
On Friday, April 18th da Vinci hosts its annual auction at the Melody Ballroom. This event raises money for supplies and staffing to ensure a rich arts-filled learning environment for all its students. Tickets are still available and can be purchased online. Donations can be made here as well. I'm sure our nearby neighbors have heard the da Vinci Marching Band out rehearsing on clear days. We appreciate your patience putting up with the exuberant noise of our young musicians. Stay tuned for our parade participation dates. Da Vinci 8th graders Amelia Muldrew and Alisa Folen each won a National level Scholastic Art Award. KGW ran a story on Monday's 4:00 pm news acknowledging their achievements. Alisa's silver medal winner was Captured,a B&W photograph, and Amelia's gold medal winner was Mad Bunny, a ceramic mask. Amelia will be traveling to New York to accept her award at Carnegie Hall! |

As of January 1, 2014, the City of Portland's new Protected Sick Time ordinance went into effect, providing workers in Portland with a protected right to earn sick time to use when they or a family member are sick, injured, or in need of preventive health care.
The ordinance applies to all employees who work within the geographic boundaries of the city of Portland for 240 hours or more in a calendar year. Employers with six or more employees must allow workers to earn paid sick leave. Employers with five or fewer employees are required to provide unpaid sick leave. Full, part-time, and temporary employees should accrue one hour of job-protected sick time for every 30 hours worked and, if earned, can accumulate up to 40 hours paid or unpaid sick time per calendar year. Earned sick leave may be used in increments of one hour or greater, and may be used to cover all or part of a shift. For employers and employees interested in learning more about this new law, visit the web, email sicktimeinfo@portlandoregon.gov or call 503.823.3994. |

The Jim Pepper Project is a play with music.
Jim Pepper was an Oregon born (Salem) Native American from the Kaw/Creek tribes. His family moved to Portland when he was a teenager and when he was old enough moved to New York with Jazz pianist Tom Grant. Jim is known to be the first artist to fuse Jazz with Native American chants (which he learned from his grandfather). The show explores how Jim decided that Jazz could be fused with the ancestral chants by exploring the roots of how Native American and African Americas are similar in their lives during the 1619 to present day (slavery, Trail of Tears etc.) The show features Jim's songs, one reaching the top 100 pop chart in 1969 - Witchi Tai To. All of the cast is of Native American descent which is exciting for us because we've never featured this type of casting here at triangle. Once the show closes on May 30th it will be readied to tour Oregon in 2015. Ed Edmo (who is a Native American story teller and travels with Tears of Joy Theatre); Karen Kitchen who was last seen in Ghost of Celilo, Cochise Anderson (AEA member) who is flying in on April 6th from the Gutheri where he just finished a musical and Salim Sanchez (mixed race) who was last seen here at triangle in Avenue Q. The show has received generous support from NAYA and PSU's Indigenous People's Program and grants from Spirit Mountain Community Fund, The Jackson Foundation, The Autzen Foundation and RACC. Also featured with be local stomp dancers who will perform in the show. It's a thrilling time for us as this is the 'normal' triangle show but it has an educational and social element that allows the company to reach out to our community in a new way. Come, be part of this unique theatrical experience! |

This won't come as a surprise to you readers, but we have a happening neighborhood. Here's the scoop.
Now open...Welcome to the neighborhood! Opal 28 has opened at 510 NE 28th Ave (formerly the Trident Room, Mother Maybelles, and Clementines, among other things). Opal 28 is a private event space with a capacity for 100 people. There's an outdoor patio. Opal 28 also has 4 one bedroom apartments upstairs that can be rented for a night, week, or month (rates $125/night). The units have been returned to their vintage glory and are good for family visitors or vacationeres. Owner Margot also has a commercial kitchen for lease. Neighbors are invited to an open house at Opal 28 on Thurs., April 10 from 5-8 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Land Use/Development: Block 75 is the green space that is located at Couch/Davis/MLK/3rd near the Burnside Bridge. It's being developed through a partnership between Bean and Urban Development Partners into a 9-10 (9 stories on the MLK side/10 stories on the 3rd) story building with retail, offices and residential. Plans are not finalized; there could be up to 65 units (one floor could become commercial and thus would decrease that number). Architects are planning 41 parking spots in a 3 level tandem garage (this is a mechanized parking; the example they gave is a dry cleaning belt). They also said commercial residents will be able to park at the Beam lots across the street. Short term and secure bike parking will be available. Tentative design review is expected in April and construction is expected to start between Oct. and Dec. Update: Stammtisch, 401 NE 28th, has received permits from the city and has started construction. Tentative opening date is mid-April. Owner Dan Hart is hoping to participate in the Street Seats program and brought rough designs to the March KNA meeting and asked for input. The seating - on the Flanders side - would include portable tables and chairs, one larger table and emphasizes the trees and greenery. The street seating would take 2-3 parking spots away but would keep the sidewalk clear and would include bicycle parking. I believe Hart has cancelled his street seats plans after speaking with some neighbors who were unable to attend the March meeting. Please note this is on the agenda again at the next meeting. Liquor License Application: Big Town Hero at 1545 NE Sandy Blvd. applied to the OLCC for Limited On-Premises Sales license in your community. A Limited On-Premises license allows a licensee to sell and serve wine, cider and malt beverages by the drink for consumption on the premises. The license allows any form of legal entertainment. The applicant's proposed hours of operation are 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Saturday. There is indoor seating for approximately 35. The proposed menu includes a variety of cold and hot sandwiches, paninis, salads, soup and a few sides. The applicant is proposing video lottery machines in the near future. The restaurant space that was formerly Esparza's at 2725 SE Ankeny is papered up and there is a public liquor license notice on the door. The Blue Goose (just like the name on the door step) has applied for "full on-premises liquor license". Comments are due by April 21, 2014. Submit comments to Liquor Lic. Specialist, ONI at 1221 SW 4th Ave., Ste 110, Portland, OR 97204. You can also fax comments to 503-823-3050. For questions about the application, contact the Office of Neighborhood Involvement at 503-823-3092 or OCLC at 503-872-5000. Changes: Zim Zim, is moving from 2805 SE Ankeny down the street to the spot formerly occupied by Butterscotch (144 NE 28th Ave.) They will start moving soon but will keep both locations open until the Ankeny space has been sub-leased. Interested in subleasing? Contact 503-757-1151. In other changes around the neighborhood. Mirakutei restaurant at 536 E Burnside, has expanded. Over on Glisan St., Kerns Kitchen (2935 NE Glisan, formerly the Bakery Bar) in addition to a new name has expanded their hours (open weekends now too) and has Happy Hour from 3-6 Monday-Saturday. Events around the neighborhood: This Thurs., April 10 at Whole Foods Market Laurelhurst...5% Day for Sauvie Island Center on Thurs, April 10th. Shop and help this local organization educate kids about food, farming and the land. Easter's coming up and Whole Foods Market Laurelhurst is also hosting some fun events. Sat., April 12 from 12-2pm: free Deviled Eggs and Easter Tasting. Fri., April 18 from 4-4.30pm: Kids Easter Egg Hunt. Please RSVP for Easter Egg Hunt by emailing helen.lee@wholefoods.com For Earth Month, Whole Foods Market Laurelhurst will be holding our annual Styrofoam Roundup (collecting peanut and chunk Styrofoam only). Fri, April 18th thru Tues, April 22nd (9-5pm). Drop off at the front of our store. Fri., April 18-Tues., April 22 (9-5 pm): For Earth Month, Whole Foods Market Laurelhurst will be holding our annual Styrofoam Roundup (collecting peanut and chunk Styrofoam only). Drop off at the front of our store. And of course, don't forget the Kerns Buckman Annual clean up is Sat., April 19. More details at the bottom of this email. I received a notice from Byron at Burnside Brewing Co. (701 E Burnside) that they are planning their 3rd Annual Fruit Beer Festival for June. They have applied for a street closure for NE 7th Ave (between Burnside & Couch) to host the 2-day event on June 7 and 8. They plan to have a DJ, food venders, beer sampling and a percentage of the profits go to the Dougy Center. |
