NAVIGATING EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING ASSESSMENT
In an effort to build upon the value of experiential learning, a team of researchers and faculty are connecting assessment of a broad range of learning outcomes with integrated learning and career skills. When students use digital storytelling and/or portfolios to document learning experiences, our team can assess beyond the intended learning outcomes to directly identify and measure additional learning. Learners receive feedback on their additional skills, thereby giving them further insight into the learning process and future directions.
TRANSLATIONAL SCHOLARS AND MSU HUMAN RESOURCES: Two Collaborative Efforts
In a collaborative effort with MSU Human Resources (HR), MSU Global helped facilitate a research focus for HR interns during the 2013-2014 academic year. Rashad Muhammad of MSU Global led the process of connecting Christina Strong and Greg Mundth with faculty to align their internships with faculty research questions. This was an experimental extension of the Translational Scholar Model where students doing research are also trained to create digital stories. The research results were very successful for the students and for Human Resources, resulting in a case study publication by Mundth and baseline research upon which HR will build for extending their information services using video.
DIGITAL STORYTELLING
As part of the Digital Storytelling and Translational Scholar initiative, MSU Global collaborated with the Department of Human Resources to explore health and benefits-related videos for the Michigan State University community.

The project focused on creating health-related content to inform, educate, and provide faculty and staff with additional support to maintain their health. As part of the research process, a web survey was administered to assess MSU HR employees' experience in benefits-related communications. The survey helped understand the efforts needed to use digital storytelling to disseminate health-related information among the MSU community. LEARN MORE
LEAN MANUFACTURING IN THE SERVICE INDUSTRY
Translational Scholar, Gregory Mundth, presented his research on Transforming Michigan State University's HR Service Delivery Model with Principles of the Toyota Production System.

To illustrate how lean manufacturing principles might be adopted by non-manufacturing industries, Mundth's study documented the context and outcomes of that transformation, highlighting practices analogous to elements of the Toyota Production System.

The study concluded with several recommendations, including standardizing HR functions, training and capacity-building of HR unit representatives, formalizing intern positions for incoming students, encouraging use of electronic records by all departments, using visual controls such as Avaya real-time system data, and creating an address system of whom to contact for queries and immediate help. LEARN MORE
