State of Community is bright in a year of change and growth
From the Petoskey News-Review: The Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce annual State of The Community event that took place at Boyne Mountain Thursday highlighted a year of change and growth in the Boyne City area. Among the most notable changes were the faces of the people delivering the updates about the activities of the chamber, and the Boyne City Public Schools. The event served as a bit of a passing of the baton from outgoing chamber executive director, Jim Baumann, to his recently hired replacement, Ashley Cousens. Cousens served as the master of ceremonies of the event while Baumann, who will retire in about three weeks after more than eight years at the helm of the organization, used most of the chamber's presentation time slot to thank the community. "This has been a great job. It's truly been the best job I've ever had," Baumann said. "You come to this event and you hear all this great stuff, and that's kind of my life every day." The other new face among the presenters was Patrick Little who in early July became the new superintendent of Boyne City Public Schools, replacing Peter Moss who retired at the end of January after more than five years in the position. Little said it was the connectedness of the Boyne community, as evidenced through events such as Thursday's, that was a big part of what made taking the position with Boyne City Public Schools appealing to him. Great deals: Restaurant Week starts Monday at 18 eateries
Special offers are now finalized for Boyne Area Restaurant Week, which will be held Oct. 17-24.
Here is the list of all of the special offers, which include lunches and dinners. "Eighteen restaurants and food retailers are participating in what is sure to be a great kick-off to our fall and winter seasons," says Cindy Boal Janssens, volunteer coordinator of the Boyne Appétit! initiative. "Most restaurants with sit-down dining are offering 2-for-1 meal pricing at or under $35."
The Boyne Area Chamber and Boyne City Main Street sponsored a Restaurant Week earlier this spring that was quite successful. "The fact that so many businesses came on board for both of this year's efforts demonstrates just how strong our local food community has become," Janssens said, noting that two new food and beverage establishments - 7 Monks Taproom and the Boyne City Taproom - are participating this fall.
Each participating business contributed to the cost of promoting Restaurant Week. Promotions consist of printed color ads in the Northern Express, Boyne Gazette, Petoskey News-Review and Gaylord Herald -imes as well as the distribution of 60 posters, 300 flyers and a week of radio promotion on Lite 96.3.

Boyne City School Board candidates forum set for Oct. 27
The Boyne Area Chamber is sponsoring a Boyne City Public School Board Candidates Forum at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at the Boyne District Library Community Room. There are six candidates for three seats on the school board. Incumbent board member Lisa Schrock is running unopposed for a two-year term in the November 8th election. Five candidates will be on the ballot for two open six-year terms: Trisha T. Ager, Kristine Brehm, Alison Fuller Mellon, Patricia Hills and Bob South. South currently serves on the board, having been appointed a year ago to fill the seat that became vacant when board member Ed Vondra died in September, 2015. Trisha Ager works in the schools as a substitute teacher and has said that she will choose to remain a teacher instead of serving on the board, if she is one of the winners in the election. District officials told Ager that their law firm has issued an opinion that a conflict of interest law would prohibit her from serving as a board member and a substitute teacher. Details from Petoskey News-Review.

Boyne City Schools lead the area as enrollment rises by 54
From the Petoskey News-Review: Each year on the first Wednesday of October - which is Oct. 5 this year - school districts across the state tally up how many students are in attendance. Those numbers are used for most districts to determine how much state per-pupil funding they will receive. Prior to this fall's count day, school officials around the area were reporting ups and downs in enrollment. Notably, both Boyne City schools and Boyne Falls schools saw a large increase in enrollment this year, while Alanson schools saw a significant decrease. Boyne City Public Schools saw its biggest increase in enrollment in years, with the district estimating a jump of 54 students. Full story.

City and Boyne Boat Yard partner to offer rides to top of Avalanche
The Boyne City Police Department is again partnering with Boyne Boat Yard to offer rides to the top of Avalanche Preserve for mobility impaired individuals next Saturday, Oct. 15. The scenery is spectacular this time of year and some people are not able to take advantage of the view because of their physical limitations. Boyne Boat Yard Manager Charlie Harrett had the idea when he asked about getting his disabled son to the top of Avalanche. The top of the hill is reachable by a narrow gravel trail, which is gated because vehicles are prohibited. The normally locked gate will be opened by the Police Department that day from 10 to 1. Police officers and Harrett will drive the vehicles to the top. Boyne Boat Yard is making 4-wheel-drive trucks available for the day. We may also be able to accommodate some personal vehicles that are set up to transport mobility impaired persons, but you are asked to call the police department ahead of the date at (231) 582-6611 to make sure it will work. Mobility impaired individuals interested in a ride to the top should be at the Avalanche Preserve parking lot between 10 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. The parking lot is at the south end of Wilson Street. Individuals must be able to ride in a vehicle seat. The city hopes to make this an annual event during the color season.
