Great deals listed at 18 eateries for Restaurant Week, Oct. 17-24
Restaurant WeekSpecial offers are now finalized for Boyne Area Restaurant Week, which will be held Oct. 17-24.
Here is the list of all of the special offers, which include lunches and dinners. "Eighteen restaurants and food retailers are participating in what is sure to be a great kick-off to our fall and winter seasons," says Cindy Boal Janssens, volunteer coordinator of the Boyne Appétit! initiative. "Most restaurants with sit-down dining are offering 2-for-1 meal pricing at or under $35."
The Boyne Area Chamber and Boyne City Main Street sponsored a Restaurant Week earlier this spring that was quite successful. "The fact that so many businesses came on board for both of this year's efforts demonstrates just how strong our local food community has become," Janssens said, noting that two new food and beverage establishments - 7 Monks Taproom and the Boyne City Taproom - are participating this fall.
Each participating business contributed to the cost of promoting Restaurant Week. Promotions consist of printed color ads in the Northern Express, Boyne Gazette, Petoskey News-Review and Gaylord Herald -imes as well as the distribution of 60 posters, 300 flyers and a week of radio promotion on Lite 96.3.
Residents wanting to know what specials each restaurant or retailer are offering should consult the Boyne Appetit! website (www.boyneappetit.com) or pick up a flyer with the specials listed on the back. These are available at the Chamber and participating restaurants:
  • 7 Monks Taproom

First section of new Avalanche trails opens; Fund-raiser Tuesday
From the Petoskey News-Review: Less than a month after work began to construct nearly 10 miles of new mountain biking trails at Boyne City's Avalanche Preserve, the first 1.25 miles opened for use late last week. Representatives from the Top of Michigan Mountain Bike Association, the nonprofit organization that has done all the fundraising, organization and many hours of volunteer work for the project, said the first segment of intermediate-level trail was officially opened for use on Sept. 29. The trail segment begins near the two-track access road that leads up the main slope from the Avalanche parking lot and winds its way to the south. Organization officials said the sections of trail that are still under construction and not open for use are marked with signs. The group asks riders to not use the trails until they are properly packed down and officially opened for use. Full storyFor more information about the organization and the trail project at Avalanche, including a trail map, visit www.tommba.org.

Homecoming Queen Abby Gardner:
"I'm beyond grateful to have been raised in such a proud town"
Abby Gardner We thought our readers would enjoy these Facebook comments from Homecoming Queen Abby Gardner:
> "This past week has definitely been one amazing week. I'm blessed with such a great community, high school class, friend group, family, and of course an amazing role model of a teacher. Not only did we (class of 2017) win spirit week, but I also got accepted into the college I've been dying to go to (NMU), as well as win homecoming queen. It warms my heart to know that so many of the students in my school think so kindly of me. People out of high school will tell you to enjoy it while you can because it goes by quicker than you think and I always used to think it couldn't go by quick enough... Until I realized this will be my last spirit week, my last homecoming, and that after I graduate I probably won't see most of the smiling faces that I see in the hallways ever again. This week has made me thankful to my friends for always supporting me, my teachers for always believing in me, and for the little things like the smiles or "hellos" that I get in the hallways at school. I'm beyond grateful to have been raised in such a proud and prideful town. Thank you to everyone who has made, and continues to make my high school experience an unforgettable one!" More Homecoming photos.
City and Boyne Boat Yard partner to offer rides to top of Avalanche
The Boyne City Police Department is again partnering with Boyne Boat Yard to offer rides to the top of Avalanche Preserve for mobility impaired individuals next Saturday, Oct. 15. The scenery is spectacular this time of year and some people are not able to take advantage of the view because of their physical limitations. Boyne Boat Yard Manager Charlie Harrett had the idea when he asked about getting his disabled son to the top of Avalanche. The top of the hill is reachable by a narrow gravel trail, which is gated because vehicles are prohibited. The normally locked gate will be opened by the Police Department that day from 10 to 1. Police officers and Harrett will drive the vehicles to the top. Boyne Boat Yard is making 4-wheel-drive trucks available for the day. We may also be able to accommodate some personal vehicles that are set up to transport mobility impaired persons, but you are asked to call the police department ahead of the date at (231) 582-6611 to make sure it will work. Mobility impaired individuals interested in a ride to the top should be at the Avalanche Preserve parking lot between 10 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. The parking lot is at the south end of Wilson Street. Individuals must be able to ride in a vehicle seat. The city hopes to make this an annual event during the color season.

SELF INJURY - Cutting and other forms of self-mutilation will be discussed at Lifetree Café at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, October 9. The program, titled "Cutting: The Epidemic of Self-Mutilation," features filmed interviews with two individuals who committed acts of self-harm including cutting and burning. "After a while it became a medicine for me," says one of the individuals, who describes cutting herself regularly for a period of two years. During the program, participants will have an opportunity to discuss emotional wounds they've experienced in their own lives and how they've responded to them. Lifetree Café is located 401 S Park St., Boyne City. It is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable setting. Questions may be directed to Julie Hasse at 231-582-7983 or Lifetree@fpboyne.org.
