Free Clinic, food pantry host Business After Hours tonight
After taking the summer off, the Boyne Area Chamber's Business After Hours will start up again at 5:30 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Sept. 15. Hosting the business networking event will be the Good Neighbors Food Pantry and Boyne Area Free Clinic, located at 624 State St., Boyne City. The Grain Train Natural Foods Market will be providing hors d'oeuvres, and Stiggs Brewing Co. will provide beer. There is no charge for admission or refreshments. Good Neighbors Food Pantry is celebrating its first anniversary. It opened in September 2015 with the goal of creating a community-based food pantry to provide healthy food to Boyne area families in need. The Boyne Area Free Clinic is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization formed in 2007. The clinic is open on Fridays, providing basic primary care, immunizations and urgent care for low-income people from a five-county area. Info: 231-582-4065.

Sept. 24 Harvest Festival includes farmers, music, crafts and fun

Boyne City will again celebrate its autumn bounty at the Harvest Festival Saturday, Sept. 24. The event brings music, crafts and fall produce to the downtown from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Portions of Water and Lake streets will be closed to traffic. The Farmers Market will move from Veterans Park to Water and Lake streets for the event. There will also be an arts and crafts show and folk art demonstrations. Pony rides run from 12 to 2 p.m. and there will also be children's games, pumpkin painting and more. The festival is sponsored by the Boyne City Main Street Program and the Boyne Area Chamber. More than 20 scarecrows will be displayed around downtown from mid-September until Halloween. Six musical performers will be featured during on three stages in the downtown. Get an update on State of the Community at Oct. 13th luncheon
Everyone in the community is invited to attend the Boyne Area Chamber's 7th annual State of the Community luncheon, presented by 4Front Credit Union. This year's event will be held in the Vienna Room at Boyne Mountain Resort from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13. Speakers will be Boyne City Manager Mike Cain, County Commissioner Chris Christensen, School Superintendent Patrick Little and Chamber Executive Director Jim Baumann. Admission is $20, which includes salad, deli sandwich buffet, potato chips, assorted dessert bars, iced tea, coffee, tax and gratuity. Table sponsorships, which include eight seats, table sign and introductions at the event, are available for $210. Register early for best Expo booth location and price
 Registration is now open for the Boyne Chamber's 8th Annual Business Expo and Taste of Boyne. The Expo will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, at a new location, the Civic Center at Boyne Mountain Resort. This expo is always one of Northern Michigan's largest business networking events, as 1,300 people come to see 80 local exhibitors. The public is welcome to attend for $5 admission, which includes tastings from food and beverage providers. Exhibitors receive extra admission passes for their employees, friends and clients. A cash bar will be available.
Register early! Sponsors receive top booth location priority, followed by exhibitors in the order that they turn in their registration and payment. Booth space on the Main Level of the Boyne Mountain Civic Center is limited to about 65 exhibitors, and 40 booths have already been reserved. Additional space is available on the Lower Level, and booth fees are lower for that area. Last year's Expo booths sold out five weeks before the event. Exhibitors are limited to chamber members.

Leadership Charlevoix County kicks off with retreat on Beaver Island
Leadership Charlevoix County kicked off its sixth year with a team-building retreat for the 21 class members on Beaver Island Sept. 11-12. Before boarding the Beaver Island Boat Company ferry, the class kicked off their retreat at the Charlevoix Public Library with a team-building exercise led by Drew Baar from Camp Daggett. Once on the island, the class took in the sights, sounds and places of interest for the next day and a half, including an overnight stay and tour at the CMU Biological Center, visits to the Community Center, the Mormon Print Shop, Marine Museum, Little Sand Bay, the Beaver Island Transfer Station, Beaver Island Community Schools, Health Center, District Library, Chamber of Commerce, and Welke Airways/Air Ambulance Service. Over the next nine months, participants will take part in sessions involving Government; Ethics, Culture and Philanthropy; Economic Development; Education; Health and Human Services; and Environment and Natural Resources. The class will also learn "hands on" leadership skills including public presentations, how to run a meeting, grant writing, and conflict resolution. Class members will collaborate throughout the year on a community service project. In response to the overwhelming need for mental health services in our local communities, Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital has opened its new Behavioral Health Department. Providers will see patients in both Charlevoix and Boyne City, making care as convenient as possible for all age groups. Heading the department is long-time provider Lori Katzman, MD, a graduate of the University of Michigan and Wayne State University School of Medicine. Joining her is Michael Lucido, PhD, Michalene Wright, Physician's Office Clinical Coordinator, and Heather Elzinga, office coordinator. These providers have worked together for more than 15 years and have an extraordinary reputation in northwestern Michigan.

Friggy's celebrates first anniversary; Entire menu is $5 or less
 Friggy's SOBO Pub is celebrating its first anniversary this month by offering any of their regular menu items for $5 or less. Owners Jeff and Deb Leppala thanked their customers for their support and noted that they have become known for "not only our delicious food and beer menu of over 140 options, but also our Cheers for Charity" when they hosted the Boyne City Spelling Bee and the American Legion Poker Run, raising a combined $6,000 for the Boyne River Sculpture, Charlevoix Area Humane Society and American Legion veterans. "We are proud members of Boyne Appétit and proud members of the Boyne Area Chamber." This fall they will be organizing pool leagues and a chance to win a trip to Las Vegas during football season. Aten Place hosts conservancy fundraiser concert Sunday
Aten Place has been a supporter of two of Northern Michigan's finest non-profit organizations for several years. The Top of Michigan Mountain Bike Association fund-raiser was held last week and the Little Traverse Conservancy concert event will be held from 5-8 p.m. this Sunday, Sept. 18. Restaurants announce their hours for fall/winter season
BELLA VITA Italian Restaurant will be open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday and closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
ROBERTS RESTAURANT will be closed on Wednesdays for the fall and winter. They open at 7 a.m. the other six days of the week and close at 2 p.m. except on Fridays when they are open until 8 p.m.
LAKE STREET MARKET will be open 11-7 Monday through Thursday, 11-8 Friday, 10-8 Saturday, and closed Sunday. Co-owner Liz Glass explained it this way: "Staff is in short supply around town, as you may have noticed, and Liz and Chris are getting a little too old for the seven-days-a-week thing. So sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. And sincere thanks for your continued support! Please share so we can get the word out."
WATER STREET CAFE is closed for the rest of September. They will reopen for breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in October. Info: 231-622-1098.

Humane Society raising funds with Dining For Paws dinner
The Charlevoix Area Humane Society has several fundraising events planned for the weeks ahead:
Sept. 23 - Dining for Paws - Organize your own dinner party with friends who donate to the Humane Society. Then join others at the afterglow for dessert and dancing at the Charlevoix Country Club Shanahan Barn. Details.

Individuals in the beginning stages of starting a business, in need of accessing capital, or simply considering self-employment, will have the opportunity to attend a Starting a Business workshop Wednesday, October 5 in Petoskey. The workshop is being offered by the Northwest Michigan Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in partnership with North Central Michigan College, and is being held from noon to 2:30 p.m. in Room 536 of the North Central Student and Community Resource Center, 1515 Howard Street. COPING WITH BULLIES will be discussed at Lifetree Café on Sunday, Sept.18, at 6:30 p.m. The program features a filmed interview with Scott Larson. "You have three parties involved when it comes to bullying," Larson explains. "There are the bully, the victim, and the bystanders. Most people, as bystanders, don't think they contribute to bullying, but that is probably the group that has the most power." During the program, participants will have the opportunity to tell of times they've faced bullying and how it impacted their lives. Lifetree Café is located 401 S Park St., Boyne City.
