Boyne City Main Street hosts dinner to celebrate its volunteers
Boyne City Main Street put on a wonderful Volunteer Dinner on a beautiful night in Veterans Park Thursday. About 100 local volunteers attended, sitting at a long string of tables arranged in a line more than 100 feet long. They enjoyed each other's company and Boyne City Rotary's famous barbecued chicken. Main Street Board President Pat O'Brien welcomed the volunteers, saying "We are pleased to have this opportunity to celebrate YOU, our committed and loyal volunteers. You make amazing things happen. With your support we host Stroll the Streets, the SOBO Arts Festival, Boyone Thunder, the Stroll Through History Tour, Chocolate-Covered Boyne, the Santa Parade and much more." He thanked the Rotary, Lions and Kiwanis clubs for providing financial support for the dinner, Roger Coates for providing music, and event organizers Monica Kroondyk, Jennifer Doumanian, and Erica Tosch for making it all happen. O'Brien noted that Main Street volunteers donate an average of 200 hours of their time each month, the equivalent of $57,000 in assistance.

"Creating a Culture of Flexibility" is HR program topic
As employers increasingly focus on results rather than time spent at the office, workplace flexibility is replacing the one-size-fits-all, 9-to-5 way of working. Family and personal concerns can be major sources of stress. In professional service firms, for example, studies show that well over half of employees can expect to experience some kind of work-family stress in a three-month time period. For these reasons, "Creating a Culture of Flexibility" is critical to enable people to succeed both personally and professionally - and that's the title of an upcoming program from the Northern Michigan Society for Human Resource Management from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at North Central Michigan College. Details and registration.

MEDIA BIAS will be explored at Lifetree Café on Sunday, September 11, at 6:30 p.m. "Bias: What's the Media's Agenda?" features filmed interviews with three current and former news journalists discussing the current state of bias in the media. "I would say this is the most unprofessional period of American journalism I can recall in the last 30 years," says David Aikman, a former correspondent for Time. "It's just been extraordinarily unquestioning and dismissive of opposition viewpoints." Lifetree Café is located 401 S Park St., Boyne City. It is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable setting. Questions may be directed to Julie Hasse at 231-582-7983 or Lifetree@fpboyne.org.
