Meeder resigns; Main Street program seeks new exec director
 |
| |
Lori Meeder
|
After a little more than a year and a half as the Boyne City Main Street Program Executive Director Lori Meeder recently informed its board that she would be leaving the program effective Monday, Sept. 5. The Board was surprised and disappointed in her decision. Despite her long-term love and support of Boyne City and the Main Street program and its volunteers, she decided that the executive director's position was not the proper fit for her. She and the Main Street leadership have stated their mutual satisfaction in the work being done and the positive working relationships. 'There are no problems other than it didn't work for Lori," said Michael Cain, Boyne City City Manager and Main Street Board member. "Since starting last March Lori has done tremendous things, just as we knew she would. Our program and its activities have never been stronger. She has excelled at bringing us the economic development and business components we wanted to build on, and we have." > The Main Street Executive Board has begun seeking a replacement. Ads for the position are currently being placed and the position is posted on the city website. Existing Main Street staff and volunteers, along with city personnel will insure that this transition will be as smooth as previous ones. "That's the great thing about Boyne City and our Main Street program, it's a team effort and the loss of one person, while never desired, will not negatively affect the program," Cain said.

"Your store is pretty messy. I think I can clean it up"
How Jim White got into the hardware business 51 years ago
 |
| |
Jim White receives Golden Hammer award in Chicago from John Venhuizen, CEO of Ace Hardware Corp.
|
This past weekend Jim White, owner of Boyne City Hardware, received a Golden Hammer award from Ace Hardware Corp. at their convention in Chicago. The award celebrates Jim's 51 years in the hardware industry. Here is the backstory of how Jim and his family got into the hardware business in the first place. Jim grew up in Midland. His father, Fred White, worked at Dow Chemical and his mother, Marge White, was a housewife. When Jim was 16 years old, his mom told him he needed to get a job so he looked through the paper and saw an ad for a stock boy at the 5 and Dime store downtown. He rode his bike 4-5 miles to apply for the job. As Jim says, he was rather puny at age 16 and the owner took one look at him and turned him down flat. Dejected, but still determined to not go home without a job, he was sitting on a bench in downtown Midland looking across the street at the local hardware store. He decided to go in and apply. The owner told him they weren't necessarily hiring at the time and asked Jim why he wanted to work there. He told the owner, "I've been shopping here with my dad and your store is pretty messy. I think I can clean it up." He was hired on the spot. Three years later, his dad ended up BUYING the store and Jim continued working there through high school and college. The Midland Ace Hardware store is still owned and operated by Jim's brother, Greg White. The rest of the story: How Jim ended up in Boyne City.

And it all began with one woman: Cheri Leach, the center's founder, who started Raven Hill with her husband, Tim Leach, who has since passed away. Cheri Leach's initial career trajectory actually took several turns before she created her own calling. Full story.

FEELING TRAPPED? "My self-worth was tied to the amount of money I could bring home in a night or the amount of adoration I received from men," the woman says. "It took its toll on me." During the program, participants will be given an opportunity to share times in their own lives they've felt trapped and how they escaped. Lifetree Café is located 401 S Park St., Boyne City.
