The new Loan Closet
|
Loan Closet raising funds to replace its building; Medical equipment is loaned free to anyone who has a need
Perhaps little known to many local residents is a project called The Loan Closet. It is a medical equipment closet that maintains medical equipment for anyone who has a need. All the organizers ask is a doctor's prescription slip to get the equipment - which they say is "protection from our sue-happy society." Graciously the Boyne Area Rehab Center has for many years allowed the Loan Closet to use a storage building located in their parking lot, but recently the building has rapidly been deteriorating and it got to the point they that it needed to be replaced. Gordon Lambie spearheaded the fundraising by going to all the local service clubs and they have all stepped up to the plate and contributed. A new storage building was purchased and installed, thanks to Gordon and Cathy Burns, who donated the labor. The Loan Closet is run by Lynda Christensen and Penny Hardy. It was started by Lynda and Penny's mother, Gen Varnum. They actually have two locations, the other is in the Boyne Area Storage facility, which has provided one of their units rent free ever since they opened. "We have been doing this for 37 years," said Lynda Christensen. "It started out with the Easter Seals Society and the American Cancer Society, but about 20 years ago they closed their doors and told us to give the equipment away. But we wouldn't turn our backs on the communities that use it. Here we are, still hauling medical equipment and helping whomever is in need. Need a walker, crutches, wheelchair, beds - you name it, we probably have it."
> Christensen says the Loan Closet still needs a little more funding to finish paying for the new building. "Donations are normally made to a local church so the donor can get a tax deduction, and then if we need something, the church will help us out.," she said. Call Lynda at (231) 582-9555 if you'd like to contribute.

Birds Nest moves to new location in cottage at 230 Water St.
The Birds Nest has moved to its new location at 230 Water St. in the cottage next to Bob Mathers Ford. Store hours are 10-5 M-TH, 10-9F, 10-4 Sat, 12-4 Sun. Owner Holly Watson posted this message on Facebook: "Thanks to all of you for your kind words of encouragement as we transition to our new Nest. It's been 10 wonderful years of helping you shop for a special gift or outfit and maybe even just having a good ole chat on your visits. Being an up north store gives us the freedom to become more personable with our customers and many of you have become our dear friends. We are grateful to each and every one of you for supporting our store. The changes we are making no doubt have been very stressful and emotional for myself and staff, a few tears and a few laughs as we reminisce over the past years. They say three times is a charm and so we move into our third location, which is a charming little cottage where we will nestle in, in the lovely town of Boyne City."

Decorate a bowl for a good cause at Stroll the Streets
This Friday, August 19, will be the first Empty Bowls project bowl-decorating day at Stroll the Streets, benefiting the Good Neighbors Food Pantry in Boyne City. Organizers will continue to decorate bowls August 26 and September 2, set up in front of Freshwater Gallery at 217 S. Lake street. The Empty Bowls project allows participating people groups to create and donate bowls, then serve a simple meal to raise money for local food pantries. In Boyne City, community members make and glaze bowls during Stroll the Streets. For the meal, local farmers and market vendors make a simple local meal of soup and bread, which is served in the Boyne District Library Community Room during the Harvest Festival on September 24. At the meal, guests choose a bowl to use that day and to keep as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. In exchange for the meal and the bowl, guests contribute a suggested minimum donation. One hundred percent of the Boyne City Empty Bowls fundraising effort is given to The Good Neighbor Food Pantry. More info, email megpots@sbcglobal.net.

Poverty - could you make ends meet on a limited income?
Char-Em United Way is organizing a Poverty Simulation workshop that is designed to help participants understand what it's like to live month-to-month on a limited income. This is a simulation not a game. The goal is to help people rethink what it is to struggle financially and sensitize participants to the issues far too many local families face.
By participating in this Simulation Workshop you can walk a mile in the shoes of 38% of the households in our communities. Participants will act as a family and face the everyday struggles that a low income family faces. The simulation will be held September 16th at the Petoskey United Methodist Church from 1-4 pm. If you plan to attend you are asked to RSVP by Sept. 6 to: vista@charemunitedway.org.
