Antique autos and Flea Market bargains coming this weekend
The 43rd Annual Antique Auto Show and Flea Market is coming to Veterans Memorial Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 13 and 14. Spectator admission is free for this popular event on the shore of beautiful Lake Charlevoix. The Boyne Country Region Antique Automobile Clubs of America sponsors the auto show, which includes two classes of antique cars and another class of muscle cars and hot rods (no rat rods). More than 40 vendors are expected for the giant flea market, organized by the Boyne City Fire Department, which also operates the food concession. www.boyneantiqueautoshow.com.

Farmers Market moves to Peninsula Park this Saturday only
The Boyne City Farmers Market will move to Peninsula Park on Front Street this Saturday only. (Veterans Park is hosting the Antique Auto Show and Flea Market.) The market is open every Wednesday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. The market vendors offer seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs; gourmet baked goods and preserves; eggs and cheese; honey and maple syrup; proteins, fish, potted annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs, and cut flowers; plus a juried craft market with unique hand-made items for your home or a special gift. 
PUNCHING BABIES, THIS WEEK ONLY! - This Saturday's performers Market Music is a group called The Punching Babies - five women who love making music together. Started as a joke three years ago, the Babies (who are all current or retired professors from North Central Michigan College) are now almost serious about their musical escapades. With a strong guitar section (Jane Bowe and Kerri Finlayson), a wind/horn section (Suzanne Shumway) and two dynamic vocalists (Eunice Teel and Shanna Robinson), the Punching Babies bring their own inimitable style to a variety of popular and not-so-popular songs.

The Boyne City Firefighters Association is proud to present the 34th Annual "Country Music Spectacular" starring Nashville recording artist David Adam Byrnes with special guest Morgan Frazier from "The Voice." This year's show will be held Sunday, September 25, at The Boyne City High School Performing Arts Center, with two shows, 3 & 6 p.m. Each year the proceeds are used for new and updated advanced safety equipment and training for the Fire Department. Past shows have helped them replace Shocks, Front and Rear Springs, Brakes, Roll Bars, Lettering and Striping, Back End of Fire Engine, Light Bars and a Brand New Grass Fire Truck. Nov. 2nd Business Expo exhibitor applications are in the mail
Mark your calendar. The Boyne Chamber's 8th annual Business Expo and Taste of Boyne will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, at Boyne Mountain Resort. This is one of the largest business expos in Northern Michigan with 90 business booths and attendance of 1,300 people in recent years. Exhibitors are limited to Chamber members, and all members will receive an application form in the next few days. The public is welcome to attend the event for $5 admission, which includes tastings from a dozen food, wine and beer providers. Free plane rides for kids next Saturday
If your child is interested in flying, the Boyne City Municipal Airport is the place to be next Saturday morning, Aug. 20. Free Young Eagles airplane rides will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon for students ages 8 to 17 to learn about flying and general aviation. The program is offered through EAA Chapters 560 & 1087 and rides are on a first come, first served basis. The airport is located at 1048 East Main Street.
Leadership program looking for community project ideas

Leadership Charlevoix County is now accepting proposals from local nonprofit organizations for its annual Community Service Project. The program is now starting its sixth year as a comprehensive training experience for community members seeking to play a more active role in leadership and their communities. The Community Service Project is an integral part of the hands-on experience of LCC participants. Each year, the class decides on a project that will benefit people in Charlevoix County. The project involves all members of the leadership class and focuses on team building, project management, and leadership skills.
Projects from past classes have included:
2012 - Community Free Clinic promotion and renovations, Boyne City
2013 - Mobi-Mats fundraising and installation at Whiting State Park
2014 - Boyne City Dog Park design and promotion, Boyne City
2015 - Parking Lot/Establishment of an entry to Nature Preserve, East Jordan
2016 - Born Learning Trails in Beaver Island, Boyne City, Charlevoix, East Jordan
The deadline to submit project ideas is Sept. 1. The Leadership Class of 2016-2017 will review the proposals at their kickoff retreat on Beaver Island in September. 
Boyne Arts Collective ribbon cutting 
The Boyne Arts Collective commemorated the installation of  new signs with a ribbon-cutting event  last Friday. Officials from the Boyne Area Chamber and the City of Boyne City joined BAC board members at the gallery's new location at 214 Water St. Jackie Wollenberg, curator for the gallery, thanked those in attendance, and expressed appreciation to those who have helped to make the BAC a successful venue in downtown Boyne City. Special thanks went to Bruce Janssen from The Wood Shop for his beautiful craftsmanship in making both the building sign and the sidewalk sandwich board. See slide show.
Labor Day Weekend Drag Race set for Sunday, Sept. 4
The annual Boyne City Drag Race will be held Sunday, Sept. 4. Side-by-side, eighth-mile drag races will be from 12 noon-5 p.m. at the airport, 1048 E. Main St. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Boyne City Airport and the Boyne Valley Lions Club. The event is organized by the Lions and a committee of drag race enthusiasts. Entry fees are $25 in advance and $30 on race day for cars, trucks and motorcycles, while pit passes are $15. Spectators pay a $10 admission fee; children under 12 years are admitted free. Gates open to racers at 8:30 a.m. for registration and tech inspections. Prizes are awarded for Fastest Response Time, Fastest Run Time, and Farthest Distance Traveled. New plaque for Rotary's 100 Year Project
The City of Boyne City placed a new plaque on the concession stand at Rotary Park. The plaque acknowledges the construction of the concession stand as a the "100-Year Project" of the Boyne City Rotary Club. Rotary International celebrated its centennial in 2005, and each of its 35,000 clubs in over 200 countries worldwide completed a project to recognize the event. Rotarians around the world participate in local service projects with their own clubs, and unite as an international organization to tackle large projects such as the ongoing campaign to eradicate polio, in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Trombones Plus and jazz flutist Ali Ryerson will perform at Evenings at the Gazebo at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, in Old City Park. Trombones Plus is an easy-listening jazz ensemble featuring five trombones, plus piano, bass, and drums. The group performs a wide variety of popular, patriotic and jazz standards. From Gershwin to Jobim to Ellington, all arrangements feature that warm, vibrant, mellow, smooth and soulful Trombone sound. With a career spanning four decades, Ali Ryerson continues to tour, record and teach master classes internationally. Consistently voted among the top jazz flutists in the Downbeat Jazz Poll and honored as Jazz Flutist of the Year nominee by the Jazz Journalists Association, Ryerson has released nearly two dozen recordings on major jazz labels.

Friggy's celebrates first year with parking lot party on Saturday
This Saturday, Friggy's SOBO Pub will be celebrating their one-year anniversary with a parking lot party. There will be live entertainment as well as food and drink specials. It is open to the public and families are encouraged to stop in and check it out. September will be Friggy's first official Customer Appreciation Month. Explore NASA technology at Raven Hill on Aug. 20th
Working on the egg drop challenge
Raven Hill Discovery Center will host the NASA Glenn Research Center from Cleveland at the second annual Community Technology Explorations and Challenges Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20. Space enthusiasts of all ages can take part in "make-it, take-it activities," which will give guests an opportunity to construct a handheld jet engine model, build a robotic arm end effector, assemble a model of Orion and create energy-storing bead bracelets that harness the sun's power. A NASA expert will make a presentation at 1:30 p.m. Families can pre-build and test a shoebox glider at 11 a.m. or package a raw egg (simulating delicate instruments) to be dropped 1,000 feet from a plane at 1 p.m. Info: 231-536-3369. Nessa brings Celtic music to Aten Place on Saturday
Aten Place will bring an evening of Celtic music with Nessa to its stage on Saturday, Aug. 13. Nessa is a Celtic fusion group led by multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Kelly McDermott, known for her dazzling flute technique and beautiful, soulful voice. She is joined by co-founder / multi-instrumentalist Rob Crozier to research and arrange the music of Nessa. AUG. 27 PERFORMER CHANGE - The Aug. 27 show at Aten Place has changed. Darren Beachly and the Railroaders are unable to perform, but bluegrass group Chasin' Steel has been retained for that date. Anyone with tickets for the original show may request a refund should they not care to trade their tickets for the Chasin' Steel performance.
County fair opens Aug. 23; Chamber sells Monster Truck tickets
The 111th annual Emmet-Charlevoix County Fair at the Petoskey Fairgrounds kicks off for the public on Tuesday, Aug. 23 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 28. The Michigan Monster Truck Shoot Out roars back to the Fair on Thursday, Aug. 25. Monster Truck tickets are available at the Boyne Area Chamber office, 28 S. Lake St., Boyne City. Admission: Pre-buy, 2 for $25, single $17 for ages 13 and up. Day of show $17 each for ages 13 and up; ages 2-12, $8 each. Age 2 and under admitted free. Country bands "Parmalee" and "Love and Theft" will be co-headlining the grandstand events. American House hosting Aug. 20 car show in Charlevoix

Treasure Lake Charlevoix - a Poker Run for the regular boats
The Lake Charlevoix Association is planning an event that might be described as Boyne Thunder for regular-sized boats. And the theme is "clean and safe boating." The association will hold its first-ever Treasure Lake Charlevoix Poker Run on Friday, August 12. Between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. participants will spend a leisurely day on the lake traveling to collect 5 cards needed for a poker hand. Afterwards,  there will be a reception at Sommerset Pointe Yacht Club. Appetizers will be provided and a cash bar available. Sponsors have donated items that will be sold via silent or live auction. Food and fun at St. Matthew Summer Festival on Aug. 21
St. Matthew Church is having their Summer Festival on Sunday, Aug.21st. The church is located at 1303 Boyne Ave. in Boyne City. The festival will be held from 12 to 2:30 p.m. Ma's & Brother Bill's Polish dinner will be featured, including Golumpki (stuffed cabbages), sauerkraut & sausage, cream cucumbers, pierogis, dill potatoes, fresh polish sausage, desserts, and more. Admission is $10 for adults, seniors - $9, children - $5, and under 4 years old will be free. From noon to 1 there will be live Polka music. Silent auctions will be held from noon to 2:30 and the live auction will start at 1:30. There will be free children's activities including inflatables, games and prizes. A refreshment tent will have popcorn, soda, hot dogs and more. A $4,500 cash raffle will be held with the drawing at 2:30.

BC LANES1191 M-75, Boyne City, reopens this weekend and will now be open 7 days a week. The Monday Night Men's League meeting is set for 7 p.m. Aug. 15, and the Wednesday Night Men's League will meet  Aug. 17th. Mixed league meeting is set for 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14. These meetings are for all bowlers, not just the captains, but you don't have to attend the meetings to participated in leagues. HOUDINI DANCE CLUB is open Wednesdays from 7-11 p.m. on the third floor of the historic Odd Fellows Hall at 214 East Water St., next to Boyne City Hardware. Free lessons to beginners. BLOOD DRIVE - An American Red Cross Blood Drive will be held from 10 a.m. - 3:45 p.m. Aug. 18, at Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital, 14700 Lakeshore Drive, Charlevoix. Another blood drive will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 1303 Boyne Ave. on Monday, Aug. 29, from 11 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Come to donate and join us for lunch, which also includes appetizers and sundaes. LIFE LESSONS - The debate over national policies and practices regarding illegal immigration will be explored at Lifetree Café on Sunday, Aug. 14, at 6:30 p.m. The program - "Border Wars: Is There a Compassionate Response to Illegal Immigration?" - features filmed interviews with a border patrol agent, Mexican nationals, and former U.S. Representative Tom Tancredo, an outspoken critic of immigration policy.Lifetree Café is located 401 S Park St., Boyne City. The Visitors Guide mobile app is available in the iTunes App Store. Search for Boyne Visitors Guide and download to your iPhone for iOS 6 or later or to your iPad. When downloading for iPad, designate the iPhone app. A Google Play version of the app is expected to be available in a few months.
