First steel rises for new Boyne City Hall facilities
The roughly $7 million new City Facilities project for the City of Boyne City has begun to rise from the ground at the old City Hall site on North Lake Street. The old City Hall was demolished this spring. Since March crews from Hallmark Construction and their subcontractors have been preparing the site for the new building, which will house Boyne City's Police, Fire, Ambulance, City Hall, Museum, and historic 1905 tower clock and 1917 LaFrance Firetruck. The first pieces of steel went up this week after new drainage, soil and foundations were installed. In the coming weeks the erection of much more steel and block walls will be clearly visible. As the walls go up, people will notice that the new building will be much closer to North Lake Street than the old building was. The building was designed that way to create more open space closer to Lake Charlevoix. The project continues to remain on schedule and on budget; funding was made possible by a voters who approved a ballot measure last November. The existing Fire Hall and temporary Police Station building will be demolished after the new building is occupied around July of 2017, the 100th anniversary year of the city's LaFrance Fire Truck.

Dinner and video honor the contributions of BC volunteers
Watch a Main Street video about the importance of volunteers.
Are you one of Boyne City's many community volunteers? Meet us downtown for a Community Gratitude Dinner hosted by Boyne City Main Street and local service clubs from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 8. Boyne City is a special place. We often hear from visitors and residents of neighboring communities: "Boyne City is amazing - how in the world do they do it?"
We are surrounded by natural beauty, we have great restaurants and businesses, and we have exciting events and activities throughout the year. But what makes Boyne City special is our people - YOU! Our people are dedicated to making Boyne City a great place to live, work and visit - and therein lies the magic. We all work together to get things done!
We're going to close the street and enjoy some music, good food and each other. We will have a long table set for you - our community - to come together to celebrate another successful summer season and celebrate Boyne City. If you have helped in any way to make our community better, this invitation is for you. Please mark your calendar now and watch for more information on our celebration of you.

The volunteer-driven event will be held from Noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, September 4th at the Boyne City Municipal Airport, located at 1048 Main Street in Boyne City.  The annual fun and family-friendly event drew over 90 vehicles of all varieties to race down the 1/8-mile strip on the airport runway. Anyone interested in helping with the event is encouraged to attend the committee meeting or contact the Boyne City Hall at 231.582.6597 for more information.
City and Consumers upgrading street lights to save money
Beginning late next week Consumers Energy is scheduled to begin replacing 149 Mercury Vapor (MV) streetlights throughout Boyne City with high efficiency Light Emitting Diode (LED) fixtures. The City contracted to have the work done at a cost of $12,251 instead of having the streetlights converted to High Pressure Sodium (HPS) fixtures. While that work would have been done at no initial charge, the HPS lights would not have been as energy efficient and would have given off an orange light that Boyne City has been moving away from for over a decade.
The LED lights will give off a more natural white light, which is closer to the light quality of the old MV streetlights that are being replaced. Because the new LED lights cost less to operate per month than the ones they are replacing, the city will end up saving more money than they are spending on the project in two and half years or less.
Questions or comments streetlights can be directed to Boyne City Hall at 231.582.6597. Full press release.

Be careful if you're thinking of renting out your home
You may be considering renting out your home for extra income while you're away for an extended period of time. Though this seems like an ideal solution for families with extra room to spare, it can pose liabilities. Checking the references of potential renters is vital when determining if you will open your home to strangers. If you uncover any red flags while checking references, do not agree to rent your home, even if you are afraid of hurting someone's feelings. Your first priority should be to protect yourself and your property. Take the following considerations to heart in order to protect your home. Flier with more tips.

Full Circle brings classic rock to the Aug. 10 Gazebo concert
Full Circle
Next Wednesday's Evenings at the Gazebo concert will feature Full Circle, a local classic rock band formed in 1969. Although each band member has been involved in many different projects (and other careers) over the years, two original members (Nick Lilak and John Slough) are still leading the current line-up. In 2006, they convinced Roger Lilak to join the band on bass guitar/vocals, and during the past few years, Full Circle has added local percussionist Graham Fineout for most shows. Full Circle's primary musical focus is classic rock or "nostalgia rock" from the late 60's through the 80's. During their shows, Full Circle plays a wide variety of popular tunes while always keeping vocal harmonies at the forefront.
The Boyne Area Chamber produces the summer concert series, which is made possible by support from presenting sponsor Otsego Memorial Hospital - Boyne Valley Clinic, the Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau and other business and individual sponsors, including: Bob Mathers Ford, Boyne City HardwareIndustrial Magnetics Inc., Joyce & Gordon Lambie, Lynda's Real Estate Service, Arch & Trish Wright, and Huff Pharmacy.
Concert-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets, a picnic dinner and perhaps a bottle of wine - but please leave your dogs at home. Thick 'N' Juicy Diner will bring again their food cart, offering bratwurst, hot dogs and root beer floats at the concerts. For more information, call the chamber at 231-582-6222 or visit www.gazeboconcerts.com

Evenings at the Gazebo schedule for the rest of the summer:
