First segment of BC-Charlevoix Trail opens
"After 11 years, I am very happy to see this project come to fruition"
The first two-mile section of the long-awaited Boyne City-Charlevoix Non-Motorized Trail officially opened this morning. The open section runs from the Boyne City limits through Young State Park to Nelson Road. County Parks Director Ross Maxwell tells us the next mile from Nelson Road to Park of the Pines at Springwater Beach Road should open in a week or so. We snapped pictures of a a runner and cyclist Bill Cross, who said the new trail was "fantastic."
Longtime trail supporter Mike Sheean took pictures of the trail paving as it began a week ago and emailed this note to friends who have supported the project: "Friday, July 22nd was a very special day in my life and I would like to thank you for making it happen. Attached is a photo of the first paved section of the Boyne City-Charlevoix Trail. I followed the asphalt trucks out to the middle of Young State Park. After 11 years of struggle, I am very happy to see this project come to fruition."
THE NEXT SECTION of the trail from the Little Traverse Wheelway south about three miles is due to go out for bids this fall and Maxwell hopes construction will begin in the spring. News-Review story.

Boyne Area Chamber looking for two board members
Job changes by two local leaders have resulted in two openings on the Boyne Area Chamber Board of Directors. Family Fare manager Tracy Donaldson has received a promotion and next week will become manager of the D&W Fresh Market in Petoskey. D&W is, like Family Fare, owned by the SpartanNash corporation. Last week we reported that board member Emily Wilmot resigned from the board after accepting a position as human resources director with Drost Landscape of Petoskey. Any current chamber member interested in being considered for a seat on the board is invited to contact board president Mike Doumanian (mdoumanian@boyne.com) or executive director Jim Baumann (jim@boynechamber.com) by August 11th. Current board members.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR UPDATE - The chamber has received more than 20 applications for the executive director position. Board members will be interviewing some of those candidates next week and the full board will interview finalists and pick a new director. We did it! Avalanche trails project raises $50k - $100k with match
There was an overwhelming expression of support from the people of Northern Michigan during the crowdfunding campaign for new Avalanche Destination Trails. We surpassed our $50,000 goal, which means that the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the Michigan State Housing Development Authority will contribute another $50,000 to the trails at Avalanche in Boyne City. We can't thank you all enough for the support you gave to the region's trail system. Because of the success of the campaign and your generosity, the new trails will begin to appear this year. In fact, more trails within the system will be able to be completed this year. There will be one easy trail for all levels of trail users, two intermediate trails, and one challenging (black diamond) trail. All levels of mountain bikers and hikers will have new trails on Avalanche to enjoy.
From the support and vision of the City of Boyne City leaders to the visitor who wants even more to enjoy when they return, the support has come from all over and has overwhelmed us. Look for updates at www.tommba.org. We will be filming the effort and showcasing this trail system to attract more visitors and future residents to our area. If you have any questions about this effort please feel free to email info@tommba.org. Also check us out on Facebook for more updates.

HOW TO HEAL after an unexpected tragedy will be explored at Lifetree Café on Sunday, July 31, at 6:30 p.m. The program, titled "The Art of Loss: How Tragedy Can Transform Your Perspective," features filmed interviews with two young artists who experienced the loss of a loved one. Both artists coped through their art. "For me, painting is a documentation of a moment. It's as if the painting understands me," one of the artists says. "When I couldn't find words, or words weren't big enough, a canvas or a piece of Masonite was able to relate to me and process things for me." During the program, Lifetree participants will have the opportunity to consider times they have experienced loss and how they responded. Lifetree Café is located 401 S Park St., Boyne City. It is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable setting. Questions may be directed to Julie Hasse at 231-582-7983 or Lifetree@fpboyne.org.
