Save the date - volunteers will be honored at a Sept. 8 dinner
Are you one of Boyne City's many community volunteers? Meet us downtown for a Community Gratitude Dinner hosted by Boyne City Main Street and local service clubs from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 8. Boyne City is a special place. We often hear from visitors and residents of neighboring communities: "Boyne City is amazing - how in the world do they do it?"
We are surrounded by natural beauty, we have great restaurants and businesses, and we have exciting events and activities throughout the year. But what makes Boyne City special is our people - YOU! Our people are dedicated to making Boyne City a great place to live, work and visit - and therein lies the magic. From our volunteers to our business owners, from our city and school leaders, from students and retirees, from our young professionals to our seasoned pros, from our teachers to our day care workers, from our non-profit organizations to our chamber board, from our civic organizations to our churches, from our CEOs to our hourly workers - we work together to get things done!
We're going to close the street and enjoy some music, good food and each other. We will have a long table set for you - our community - to come together to celebrate another successful summer season and celebrate Boyne City. If you have helped in any way to make our community better, this invitation is for you. Please mark your calendar now and watch for more information on our celebration of you.

Mike Doumanian appointed Chamber board president
Mike Doumanian
Mike Doumanian has been appointed President of the Boyne Area Chamber Board of Directors. Mike was formerly the vice president and this week was appointed by the board to step in and replace Emily Wilmot, who has resigned from the board. Wilmot recently accepted a position as human resources director with Drost Landscape of Petoskey, and this made it difficult for her to continue her board responsibilities. "Emily deserves our gratitude after serving more than three years on the board, and we wish her the best in her new position," Doumanian said. Doumanian is the Director of Food and Beverage for Boyne Mountain Resort, a position he has held for the past five years. He has a degree in Food Service/Hospitality Management from Ferris State University. Mike, his wife Jennifer and their two children live in Boyne City.
NEW BOARD MEMBER NEEDED - Emily Wilmot's resignation opens up a position on the Chamber Board, and any current chamber member interested in being considered for a seat on the board is invited to contact Doumanian (mdoumanian@boyne.com) or Executive Director Jim Baumann (jim@boynechamber.com) by August 11th.  Current board members.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR UPDATE - The chamber has received more than 20 applications for the executive director position. The Executive Committee will be interviewing some of those candidates in early August and the full board will interview finalists and pick a new director. The goal is to have the new director work with Baumann for a transition period before he retires in early November.
Chief Jeff Gaither introduces new officer Kelsey Sofia
Boyne City hires first woman police officer since 2002
The Boyne City Police Department has hired Kelsey Sofia of Gaylord to fill an officer vacancy. She is the first female police officer at BCPD since Lee Cloyd  retired in 2002. Kelsey is originally from Delton MI, which she described as a small town with two traffic lights, and she expressed a sincere desire to work as a police officer in a small town. Police Chief Jeff Gaither said he is confident that Kelsey will fit in well and will become a significant contributor to the department. Gaither noted that he used a slightly different selection process this time to include community representation. "I asked the Boyne Area Chamber to recommend someone to sit on our interview panel. Greta Zumbaugh, a Chamber board member and Branch Manager of 4Front Credit Union, graciously accepted and she brought a fresh perspective to the process." New officer Kelsey Sofia is a 2016 graduate of Ferris State University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, where she also completed the Police Academy. Kelsey will now go through a three-phase Probationary Training Officer program in which she will be assigned to two veteran officers. This will provide a positive learning environment as she becomes familiar with the Boyne City Police Department operations. The senior officers will also provide training on investigations, traffic enforcement, firearms, reports, and assisting the public.
Avalanche trails project is close to reaching its fund-raising goal
One day before the deadline. the Top Of Michigan Mountain Bike Association crowdfunding effort is very close to its goal. TOMMBA is spearheading the development of 10 miles of trails at Boyne City's Avalanche Preserve. It looks like the group will succeed in its effort to raise $100,000 for the project. The campaign is through Michigan-based crowdfunding platform Patronicity. As of Friday morning, the campaign had reached $49,200 of its crowdfunding goal of $50,000. That means the project will win a matching grant with funds made possible by the two statewide agencies. For full trail plans and design notes, visit www.tommba.org.

Boyne City lottery club wins $1 million in lottery
A lucky group of 23 co-workers from Great Lakes Energy in Boyne City is splitting a $1 million Powerball prize. The 23 Dreams lottery club matched the five white balls - 04-22-24-31-33 - drawn on June 15 to win the big prize. They bought the winning ticket at the Up North Party Store, located at 1176 South M-75 in Boyne City. The club missed winning the $153 million Powerball jackpot by just one number. The club's ticket had the number 11 for the Powerball and 10 was drawn. "We've had a lottery club for several years and everyone who plays does it for fun, no one ever expected to win," said Al Aown, the club's representative. "The morning after the drawing a co-worker rushed into my office to tell me the Up North Party Store had sold a winning ticket. "When I checked the ticket I couldn't really believe it." FUN, FOOD, ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT - Boyne Appétit!
Gazebo concert features singer-songwriter Rachel B
Detroit singer-songwriter and a winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, Olivia Millerschin brings her indie folk-jazz-influenced sound to Evenings at the Gazebo in Old City Park of Boyne City at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 27. She is making her way across the U.S. to promote her upcoming album, "Look Both Ways," which is due out in September. Just last week, she completed a brief tour with the 2015 winner of "The Voice," Sawyer Fredericks.
The 20-year-old songstress "has a voice you melt into - it is beautiful, innocent, soulful and note perfect despite reaching some notes only dogs can hear!... As far as 'uniqueness' is concerned, this American has it in spades," said Dom Flint, music reviewer for The Nottingham Post, during her recent UK tour with Irish singer-songwriter Orla Gartland.
The Boyne Area Chamber produces the summer concert series, which is made possible by support from presenting sponsor Otsego Memorial Hospital - Boyne Valley Clinic, the Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau and other business and individual sponsors, including: Pat O'Brien & Associates Real Estate,  Porter Creek Fish House, Bob Mathers Ford, Munson Health Care/Boyne Area Health Center, Harbor House Publishers, Industrial Magnetics Inc., Country Now & Then/Up the Lazy River, Joyce & Gordon Lambie, Lynda's Real Estate Service, Van Dam Custom Boats, Arch & Trish Wright, and Huff Pharmacy.
Concert-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets, a picnic dinner and perhaps a bottle of wine - but please leave your dogs at home. Thick 'N' Juicy Diner will bring again their food cart, offering bratwurst and hot dogs at the concerts. For more information or to become a concert sponsor, call the chamber at 231-582-6222 or visit www.gazeboconcerts.com

Jania is an extremely talented woman magician, which is a rarity in her field, who has been classically trained in the art of prestidigitation at the prestigious Chavez Studio of Magic in Colon, MI. Tickets are $3 for children and $5 for adults. There will be refreshments served following the performance and a chance for the children to meet and talk with the Magic Lady.

Flywheelers add Senior Citizen Day to their annual show on July 28
"Life in the Past Lane" at the end of July.
Many old favorites and a few new options will be on the schedule at the 2016 Northern Michigan Antique-Flywheelers Club's show to be held July 28 through 31. The 29th annual show has the theme of "Red versus Green" and will feature a senior citizens day on July 28 for the first time. "By discounting the entry price from $7 to $5 for senior citizens 65 and older, we hope to provide an opportunity for more attendees to enjoy some of the things they may have seen or done in their youth," said club member and security coordinator Gary Allen. Allen has been instrumental in bringing "Seniors Day" to this year's show.
The NMAF Club is an educational nonprofit organization that uses demonstrations and displays to showcase "Life in the Past Lane" and present many aspects of daily life in rural Northern Michigan in the early part of the last century. The club is an all-volunteer group that invites the public to learn about and relive the past at its annual show in July. It also hosts hundreds of area fourth graders over a four-day period in September for Student Harvest Days. The showgrounds are located on US-131 between Boyne Falls and Walloon Lake. Information on the organization and event can be found at www.walloonlakeflywheelers.com, on Facebook, or by calling President Tim Howard at 989-705-7663.

During the interview, Mounsey recalls the painful event. "I can still see it in my mind's eye today," Mounsey says. "Gasoline dripped off my little finger, the next moment there was a loud whoosh, and I was engulfed in flames." Later in the episode, Mounsey explains the challenges she's faced in learning to accept herself and how the incident has shaped her view of beauty. Lifetree Café is located 401 S Park St., Boyne City. It is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable setting. Questions may be directed to Julie Hasse at 231-582-7983 or Lifetree@fpboyne.org.
