Grandvue breaks ground on greenhouse; Completion in October
The elders, staff and board of Grandvue Medical Care Facility hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking on July 7 to initiate the first phase of the Grandvue Terrace and Recreation Park project. Construction will begin soon to erect a 24-by-30-ft. greenhouse attached to the facility's Horizonvue memory care community. The Grandvue Greenhouse will allow the facility to explore horticultural therapy and move forward in its Eden journey by finding new ways to eliminate loneliness, helplessness and boredom from elders' lives. Studies have shown that "horticultural therapy helps clients learn new skills and regain lost skills. It is a restorative technique to improve memory, attention, sense of responsibility and social interaction with few to no adverse side effects." (Psychiatry Investigation, June 2012). Funding for the greenhouse and the rest of the project was raised by the Terrace and Park Fundraising Committee through the D-I-G (Donations, In-Kind support and Grants) Campaign. The greenhouse project is scheduled for completion in October. Members of the community including representatives of the Charlevoix County Community Foundation, Malpass Foundation, Grand Traverse Construction and the Fundraising Committee were in attendance for the groundbreaking.

FUN, FOOD, ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT - Boyne Appétit!
Gazebo concert features singer-songwriter Rachel B
Next Wednesday's Evenings at the Gazebo concert will feature Rachel B, originally from Traverse City. She studied Classical Voice at Interlochen Arts Academy, but always wanted to bend the notes and break the rules with her original music. She nurtured her sound at Berklee College of Music in Boston before dashing from academics to performance. When on a tour in 2014, Rachel fell in love with the city and people in Pittsburgh, PA. She relocated shortly after and decided to take her career into her own hands as a full-time Independent artist. You can find Rachel B performing on stages all over the country, showcasing her debut album "I'm The Boss."
The Boyne Area Chamber produces the summer concert series, which is made possible by support from presenting sponsor Otsego Memorial Hospital - Boyne Valley Clinic, the Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau and other business and individual sponsors, including: Pat O'Brien & Associates Real Estate,  Porter Creek Fish House, Bob Mathers Ford,

Ronny Cox
Ronny Cox
Aten Place welcomes back Ronny Cox
Aten Place is proud to present Ronny Cox on July 23rd at 7:30 pm. This will be Ronny's third appearance on the Aten Place stage. Ronny has endeared himself to Aten Place attendees by being so available prior to his shows, making sure he has met and talked to everyone prior to his performance. This accessibility is an unexpected treat by one of Hollywood's most versatile character actors. His first time in front of a camera featured him playing the guitar in the Dueling Banjos scene in Deliverance, creating one of the most iconic moments in the history of moviemaking. He has also appeared in films like Beverly Hills Cop, Total Recall, Taps, Bound For Glory, The Onion Field, all told over 125 movies and television appearances. Despite his great success in movies and TV, what he says he loves most is singing and playing the guitar. According to him, nothing cuts through to the heart like music. The acting experience simply enhances his musical and song-writing skills.
Aten Place is a 90-plus-year-old oak frame barn with seating for 180, overlooking the Boyne River Valley, in the shadow of Boyne Mountain. It is a non-profit endeavor, and no food or beverage is sold on the premises. Many patrons bring snacks and desserts to share at intermission and there is a covered picnic pavilion for those who wish to come early and enjoy the grounds. Tickets are $16 and can be purchased in advance at www.atenplace.com or calling (231) 549-2076. Advance sales are advised; shows sell out quickly.

Flywheelers add Senior Citizen Day to their annual show on July 28
"Life in the Past Lane" at the end of July.
Many old favorites and a few new options will be on the schedule at the 2016 Northern Michigan Antique-Flywheelers Club's show to be held July 28 through 31. The 29th annual show has the theme of "Red versus Green" and will feature a senior citizens day on July 28 for the first time.
"By discounting the entry price from $7 to $5 for senior citizens 65 and older, we hope to provide an opportunity for more attendees to enjoy some of the things they may have seen or done in their youth," said club member and security coordinator Gary Allen. Allen has been instrumental in bringing "Seniors Day" to this year's show.
Some of the demonstrations and attractions for attendees to enjoy at this year's show include the tractors and engines on display, a shingle mill, a grist mill, a veneer mill, a sawmill, Kiddieland for the youngsters, several museums, blacksmiths and antique automobiles. The event also features the flea market, arts and crafts vendors and demonstrations, musical entertainment, and a variety of delicious foods.
"We have a great group of dedicated members who work on projects all year round to improve the offerings for every show," Colleen Thorne, club secretary stated. "The show is the primary way the club raises money to maintain and expand our educational facilities to share with the public, including the fourth graders from the area during the Student Harvest Days in September."
The NMAF Club is an educational nonprofit organization that uses demonstrations and displays to showcase "Life in the Past Lane" and present many aspects of daily life in rural Northern Michigan in the early part of the last century. The club is an all-volunteer group that invites the public to learn about and relive the past at its annual show in July. It also hosts hundreds of area fourth graders over a four-day period in September for Student Harvest Days. The showgrounds are located on US-131 between Boyne Falls and Walloon Lake. Information on the organization and event can be found at www.walloonlakeflywheelers.com, on Facebook, or by calling President Tim Howard at 989-705-7663.

Empty Bowls bowl-making starts tonight
This Friday, July 15, will be the first bowl-making day for the Good Neighbor Food Pantry in Boyne City. We will continue to make bowls and throughout July and August on Friday nights in front of Freshwater Art Gallery at 217 S. Lake St. The Boyne City Empty Bowls fundraiser meal will happen during Harvest Fest on September 24, at the Boyne District Library Community Room. Empty Bowls allows participating people groups to create and donate bowls, then serve a simple meal to raise money for local food pantries.
In Boyne City, community members make and glaze bowls during Stroll the Streets on Friday nights during the summer. For the meal, local farmers and market vendors make a simple, local meal of soup and bread which is served during Harvest Fest. At the meal, guests choose a bowl to use that day and to keep as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. In exchange for the meal, and the bowl, guests contribute a suggested minimum donation. One hundred percent of the Boyne City Empty Bowls fundraising effort is given to The Good Neighbor Food Pantry.

That's the average, which means there are kids who are even younger."
