USA Today: "Boyne City epitomizes the perfect small town  Independence Day celebration"
Reprinted from USA Today: Sure you can celebrate the Fourth of July in a big city, where the fireworks may be splashier and the crowds definitely more prolific. But why not escape to the country instead, and experience America's birthday in a small town, the kind of place where everyone still knows each other in real life, and not just on social media... Here are nine small towns (Including Boyne City) that go all out for the Fourth of July:
Boyne City, Michigan: From a soap box derby to a pie-eating contest, foot races to raft races to duck races, Boyne City epitomizes the perfect small town American Independence Day celebration. The big highlight here is the Commemorative Raft Race, where participants race down the Boyne River that flows through town on homemade rafts, while the crowd of onlookers douses them with water balloons, buckets of water and water guns. After the raft race comes the duck race, when nearly 1,000 rubber ducks are thrown into the river and prizes are awarded to the first ducks to cross the finish line. After dark there's a big fireworks display to cap off the birthday weekend.

Reminder: Law limits fireworks to July 3-4-5
The Boyne City Police Department would like to remind residents and visitors that the city has a fireworks ordinance clarifying when fireworks may be used. "Consumer Fireworks," which are defined as firework devices designed to produce visible and/or audible effects by combustion, are only allowed to be used on the day before a national holiday, on the holiday, and on the day after a holiday. Consumer fireworks include devices such as firecrackers, roman candles, bottle rockets, consumer size aerial and other exploding devices. Low-impact fireworks, which include sparkling devices that do not explode are allowed any time of the year. Boyne City Police Chief Jeff Gaither said there have been some questions about the use of fireworks. Basically, if it goes bang or is launched, you can only use them on the designated days. Gaither said the Police Department will investigate all reports of fireworks that are used outside of the permitted days or where prohibited. The penalty for a violation of the fireworks ordinance is a municipal civil infraction. In all violations of the ordinance, the fireworks will be confiscated. State law prohibits the use of Consumer Fireworks on any public property including city parks and streets. "We're coming up on the time of year that fireworks become very popular," Gaither said. "Following some simple guidelines will help everyone to have an enjoyable holiday in Boyne City:
  • be considerate of your neighbors.
  • follow the laws and ordinances.
  • children using fireworks should be supervised by adults.
  • don't consume alcohol or drugs when using fireworks.
  • don't use fireworks in public parks or streets.
WATCH FIREWORKS FROM "THE HILL" - Little Traverse Conservancy is again organizing a Boyne City fireworks viewing event from The Hill Nature Preserve. From the Clute Road parking area, hike about 1 mile to the top of The Hill Nature Preserve. Bring a backpack with a blanket to sit on, any snacks you might want, and a flashlight. We will have a small bonfire and provide s'mores for you to enjoy while watching the fireworks over Lake Charlevoix. Barkley wins first People's Choice Award for sculpture show
Wally Barkley
Artist Wally Barkley won the People's Choice Award.
Boyne City's Walkabout Sculpture Show celebrated its one-year anniversary on June 24th as nine new installations were placed throughout town. The nine new sculptures replaced six pieces on loan from the June 2015 installation. A reception was held at Freshwater Gallery for the artists, sponsors and community leaders to honor and thank the artists for sharing their pieces and to announce the winner of the People's choice Award, resulting from a year of voting. With over 500 votes received, both online and in paper ballot form, Wally Barkley won the cash award with "Draco Viewer," a metal telescope sculpture located in Veterans Park near the Boyne River. A canvas print of Weight of Memory was presented to Mark Chatterly in honor of his sculpture that fell over in a heavy wind storm last winter.
"It has been such a pleasure to have these works of art enhance our downtown and parks for the past year and we are thrilled with the beauty and placement of the new pieces," said event organizer and local sculptor Martha Sulfridge. "We are so fortunate to have talented artists who want to share their work with our community, and our goal to grow the exhibit was realized. We have nine new pieces along with two that are held over for a total of 11 for people to enjoy."
All works are available for sale during the year-long show, with prices listed on the plaques and on brochure ballots available at City Hall, the Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce, Boyne Arts Collective, Freshwater Gallery and Boyne City Main Street. In addition to placements in front of downtown businesses, there are sculptures in Sunset Park, Veterans Park, Old City Park and the City Marina. The Walkabout Sculpture Show is free and accessible to all viewers 24 hours a day. New ballots and maps are available to the public for a self-guided tour of the exhibit.
> For more information on the Walkabout Sculpture Show, contact the Boyne City Main Street office at 231-582-9009, Mainstreet@boynecity.com. You can vote for this year's favorite on this web page

Crowdfunding reaches $31,000 for Avalanche trails project
There has been a lot of activity the last week, helping the Avalanche trails project crowdfunding effort to reach $31,125. We have had several businesses/individuals take up Charlevoix State Bank on their challenge looking for a match to their $2,500 grant - and we are grateful for their support. The Boyne River Inn raised $1,350 at their fundraiser for this destination trail project.  7 Monks Taproom has scheduled a fundraiser for 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, July 18, when $1 will be donated for every Shorts beer purchased.
It should be noted that the existing trails at Avalanche will not be affected. The new trails have been professionally designed to optimize the user's experience. The new trails will take into account other users of Avalanche (such as disc golfers and those who enjoy the existing walking trail), keeping overlap of the trails to a minimum and will utilize the untapped interior of the park - adding 9.7 miles more trail. For full trail plans and design notes, please visit www.tommba.org.
The Top Of Michigan Mountain Bike Association is spearheading the development of 10 miles of trails at Boyne City's Avalanche Preserve. The group hopes to raise $100,000 for the effort through a new online fundraising effort. The campaign is through Michigan-based crowdfunding platform Patronicity. If the campaign reaches its crowdfunding goal of $50,000 by July 23, the project will win a matching grant with funds made possible by the two statewide agencies.

NEWS BRIEFS
Second home insurance coverage
If you are looking to insure a vacation or second home, your insurance needs are unique. KorthaseFlinn Insurance & Financial Services can help. What coverage options are there? At a minimum, your lender will require that you carry hazard insurance to protect your property against damage from fires, earthquakes or severe storms. It is also a good idea to add liability insurance, which covers you and members of your household for accidental injuries to your visitors. Opting for property plus liability insurance adds up to a standard homeowners insurance package. For an extra layer of protection, a personal umbrella liability policy extends your liability coverage for properties named in the policy.
