> News-Review story on the new taproom: The company looked at multiple locations around Michigan as possibilities for expansion, Smolak said, but attention kept returning to Boyne City. The operators worked with Catt Development, local Realtor Wally Kidd and city leaders as they secured a space in Catt's newly redeveloped business complex in downtown's "SoBo" area. "It was just a really, really welcoming business community," said 7 Monks co-owner Matt Cozzens. "They were ready for some additional concepts like this."

Awesome Distraction will be featured in the season-opening concert for Evenings at the Gazebo at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 22 in Old City Park. Originally formed in 2011 by Nick Veine (20) and Kyle Garber (19) from Manistee, they have continued to impress audiences with their harmonies and musicianship. They have brought in young, powerful singer Chloe Pepera, age 16, also from Manistee. The group has released 3 CD's and is working on a fourth. The versatility they add with guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, harmonica, violin and cajon help to fill out their "awesome" sound.

22nd season of Aten Place opens with Reina del Cid on June 25th
The 22nd season of Concerts in the Barn at Aten Place will open Saturday, June 25th with Minnesota based singer-songwriter Reina del Cid. Del Cid, who had developed a devoted online following as a solo artist, has teamed up with talented musicians Toni Lindgren, Zach Schmidt, and Andrew Foreman to develop a sophisticated sound with broad appeal. Their following is a mixed crowd of jam-heads, college students and white haired intelligentsia. Reina del Cid is no longer the singer songwriter she was five years ago, shyly posting songs to the Internet from a college dorm. After performing more than 300 shows over two years she has developed a more exciting, tighter, bolder, and more sophisticated style. Del Cid has also blossomed into an authentic storyteller with a kaleidoscope of onstage charm. Aten Place is a 90-plus-year-old oak frame barn with seating for 180, overlooking the Boyne River Valley, in the shadow of Boyne Mountain. Aten Place is a non-profit endeavor, and no food or beverage is sold on the premises. Many patrons bring snacks and desserts to share at intermission. There is also a covered picnic pavilion for those who wish to come early and enjoy the grounds and peaceful setting. Tickets are $16 and can be purchased in advance at www.atenplace.com or calling (231) 549-2076. Advance sales are advised; shows sell out quickly.
Boyne City Commission OKs sidewalk café alcohol sales
City of Boyne City Restaurant patrons in downtown Boyne City soon will be able to enjoy a glass of wine, a beer or a mixed drink with their al fresco meal. At its regular semi-monthly meeting Tuesday, the Boyne City City Commission unanimously approved an amendment to the city's zoning ordinance that will allow alcohol sales at sidewalk cafés outside restaurants in the city's downtown. The amendment will take effect 14 days after it is published in the newspaper - possibly as early as June 29. Tuesday's unanimous approval came with little discussion and stood in stark contrast to the extensive debate that surrounded the same proposal when the commission last considered it in 2013. The proposal was supported by the Boyne Area Chamber, Boyne City Main Street and the city Planning Commission.  Full story.

$10 tickets are now on sale for the Boyne Chamber's annual Duck Race at 2:30 p.m. on July 4th in the Boyne River. Martin Neuhoff, also of Boyne City, placed third and won $100. Fourth through 10th places all won $50: Ray Rose, Amy Culik, Paul Shepard, Jim Rivard, Karen Gargaro, Bryan Feltman and Lynda VanderMeulen. To purchase tickets visit the Chamber office at 28 S. Lake Street. If you purchase two or more tickets, we will accept MasterCard or Visa. Charlevoix State Bank issues crowdfunding challenge for Avalanche trails
The Top Of Michigan Mountain Bike Association is spearheading the development of 10 miles of trails at Boyne City's Avalanche Preserve . The group hopes to raise $100,000 for the effort through a new online fundraising effort. The campaign is through Michigan-based crowdfunding platform Patronicity. If the campaign reaches its crowdfunding goal of $50,000 by July 23, the project will win a matching grant with funds made possible by the two statewide agencies.
With the completion of the challenge issued by Todd Wright, Charlevoix State Bank is looking to keep the momentum going with the efforts to raise money for the TOMMBA Avalanche Destination Trails campaign. The bank is challenging 10 Boyne City businesses to join them in donating $2,500 each to the project.
The Avalanche Project topped $20,000 this week toward the $50,000 goal. Organizers are happy that they are 37% of the way through and have raised 39% of the money required for the State of Michigan match. This particular community project will bring amazing economic benefit to the area. Motels, restaurants, campgrounds, grocery stores, bike shops, gift shops, art studios, real estate agents/agencies, small businesses - in terms of exposure and workforce availability, will all benefit. These will be world class trails that people will drive many hours to experience, regardless of how they experience them - hiking, biking, snowshoeing, skiing. It will expose this area to young professionals, who will then want to find a way to make it their home. We will have this to enjoy, right in our back yard. It will help support the thriving community we are building.

HONESTY - Whether honesty really is the best policy will be examined at Lifetree Café on Sunday, June 19, at 6:30 p.M. The program, titled "Tell Me the Real Story: The Amazing Power of Honesty," features conversations surrounding whether telling the truth is best in all circumstances. "There are times it's obvious you should tell the truth," said Lifetree Café national director, Craig Cable. "But in other situations, there seems to be some gray area. In this Lifetree program, participants will discuss when confessing the truth is best, and when it might not be-especially in relationships." During the program, Lifetree participants will be given the opportunity to share experiences of when honesty, or a lack of it, has impacted their lives. Admission to the 60-minute event is free. Lifetree Café is located 401 S Park St., Boyne City. Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable setting. Questions may be directed to Julie Hasse at 231-582-7983 or Lifetree@fpboyne.org.
