Chamber offers June 13 lunch seminar at Boyne Library:
Are you prepared for the revised Overtime Exemption Rule?
 |
| |
Laura Dinon
|
The Boyne Area Chamber is offering a June 13th luncheon seminar to help local business people learn what they need to do to prepare for the new federal Overtime Exemption Rule. The U.S. Department of Labor has released their final rule that makes changes to overtime pay regulations under the Fair Labor Standards Act. If you have salaried employees making less than $913 weekly or $47,476 annually, you will probably have to increase their salary or change them to hourly "non-exempt status" and pay them for overtime as of Dec. 1, 2016. Local labor and employment attorney Laura Dinon of Plunkett Cooney will present this seminar, providing in-depth analysis of the proposed new FLSA overtime regulation provisions and practical tips on how to prepare for the changes. Dinon recently presented this seminar to a large audience for the Petoskey Chamber and we asked her to offer it in Boyne City. The seminar will be in the Community Room of the Boyne District Library, 201 E. Main St. Registration and lunch begin at 11:45 a.m. and the seminar will be held from 12:15 to 1:45 p.m.
> ADVANCE REGISTRATION is required, register online today. Space is limited. The cost is $8 per person and includes Subway sandwiches, chips and soft drinks. It is open to chamber members and the public. Call or email the chamber with any questions (231) 582-6222.

From the Petoskey News-Review: Officials with an area mountain biking organization that is spearheading the development of 10 miles of trails at Boyne City's Avalanche Preserve are hoping to raise $100,000 for the effort through a new online fundraising effort. On Monday, officials with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and the Top of Michigan Mountain Bike Association announced the campaign through through Michigan-based crowdfunding platform Patronicity. If the campaign reaches its crowdfunding goal of $50,000 by July 23, the project will win a matching grant with funds made possible by the two statewide agencies' Public Spaces Community Places program.
FUND-RAISER - The Boyne River Inn will donate 50% of the evening's proceeds to the trail crowdfunding effort the evening of Thursday, June 16th.
MATCHING CHALLENGE - Local cyclist/builder/zipline creator Todd Wright is challenging Boyne area businesses to donate to the campaign. Todd explained: "I'm ready to wield my (mightier than the sword) pen to DOUBLE match any donations from area businesses! Yup, that's right... you throw in $100 and I'll throw in $200. Throw in $500 and I'll throw in $1,000. It's really fairly simple math." Todd is willing to donate up to $2,500 towards these matches.

Learn, grow, lead: Leadership program now accepting applications
Applications are now being accepted for the 2016-17 Leadership Charlevoix County program, which begins with an orientation in August and an overnight retreat on Beaver Island in September. There are now a total of 73 graduates of the program. Here are some comments from this year's graduates: > Alissa Post of Castle Farms: "There is no doubt we have grown as a team. We have learned so much about each other and developed skills to help us step into leadership positions. Each session taught us at least one quality of leadership, whether directly or indirectly. Thank you, Leadership Charlevoix County, for teaching us to grow." > Molly Hauxwell-Currier, special publications editor of the Petoskey News-Review: "To think we started as virtual strangers, it is amazing the bonds formed and life events that have happened since we met. We wrote up leadership plans and shared them with each other. As a group, our plans were personal, vulnerable, full of plans for the future and some full of tears. A very far cry from the program that I thought was going to be Power Point slides and dry sandwiches. ANYONE INTERESTED in participating in the 2016-17 class is invited to visit www.leadershipcharlevoixcounty.com for information and application forms. The program was founded by the Charlevoix, Boyne and East Jordan Chambers, and more information is available by calling Jim Baumann at the Boyne Area Chamber at 231-582-6222.
