Ribbon cuttings planned Thursday for bike shop and bakery
Mike Cortright bought a bike at age 9 ...
and this year he bought the store.
The Chamber and Main Street will have a "doubleheader" ribbon cutting Thursday, June 2, at North Country Cycle Sport, 126 Water St., at 2 p.m. and then at Boyne City Bakery, 110 S. Lake St., at 2:30 p.m. The bakery opened earlier this spring and the bike shop has a new owner, Mike Cortright, who has a long history with NCCS. When he was 9 (see photo) in 2000, he bought the first bike ever sold when the shop opened. Later he went to work there and continued for 10 years. Last year when owner Bo Mayfield announced his retirement, it coincided with Mike's completion of his B.S. degree in Entrepreneurship at Northern Michigan University. He saw an opportunity, liked what he saw happening in Boyne City, and he bought the store on January 1, 2016. Now he's completed his degree and is on duty at the store, ready for the busy summer season.

Graduate says program offers incredible info, connections and friends
Molly Hauxwell-Currier speaks at LCC graduation
By Molly Hauxwell-Currier
When I first heard "leadership program" before my husband started it two years ago, I thought "obligation, PowerPoint slideshows, box lunches with that one bag of unrefrigerated mayonnaise." I said to him, why add another thing to your plate right now? He went through the Leadership Little Traverse program for Emmet County and he loved it. We met some great people and have awesome friends from his class. We were relatively new to the area so that meant a lot. At his graduation, I decided I wanted to do it too. I was working at Boyne City High School at the time so I signed up for Leadership Charlevoix County. Different from the Emmet County program, the Charlevoix program sends the newly acquainted group to an opening session on Beaver Island. We had a great time. We learned so much about the island and, more importantly, each other.
Now, 9 months later, we graduate from the program. To think we started as virtual strangers, it is amazing the bonds formed and life events that have happened since we met. Children and grandchildren have been born, there have been job changes, engagements and promotions. We wrote up leadership plans and shared them with each other. As a group, our plans were personal, vulnerable, full of plans for the future and some full of tears. A very far cry from the program that I thought was going to be PowerPoint slides and dry sandwiches.
leadership charlevoix county Both the Emmet County and Charlevoix County programs are accepting applicants for next year. I would recommend "leadership" to anyone. I learned an incredible amount of interesting information about the area I live, made connections with community presenters, have a mentor and unofficial mentors, who I've already gone to for career advice, and most importantly made some real friends. Anyone interested in participating in the 2016-17 class is invited to visit www.leadershipcharlevoixcounty.com for information and application forms. The program was founded by the Charlevoix, Boyne and East Jordan Chambers, and more information is available by calling those chambers.

Leadership group unveils Born Learning Trails in BC, EJ, Charlevoix
From TV 7&4 News: Families with young children can now enjoy three new trails in northern Michigan that aim to help challenge the minds of kids. They're called Born Learning Trails. They were created with the help of a group called Leadership Charlevoix County. The trails are located at Shanahan Field in Charlevoix, Rotary Park in Boyne City (pictured above), and East Jordan Elementary School. As families walk their children through the trails, they'll see signs with instructions for different activities to take part in at each station that are both fun and challenging. "I hope that the communities get to use these trails for generations to come," said Alissa Post, a member of the 2016 class of Leadership Charlevoix County. "The organizations and companies that sponsored us, the community locations that let us put the trails on their land, everybody worked together so nicely and our team enjoyed creating these trails so much." Leadership Charlevoix County partnered with United Way for the projects.
