"Boyne City Beer Mecca:" Two taprooms and a brew pub opening soon
Boyne City has been a little late to join the craft beer phenomenon, but by late summer there will be two tap rooms and a brew pub within a couple of blocks of each other in the downtown. "We're going to be the Beer Mecca of Northern Michigan," said Mike Castiglione, owner of Stiggs Brewing Company, which plans to open in August or September. Stiggs is under construction in the historic building that once housed the Boyne City Railroad office at 112 S. Park St. Also under construction is 7 Monks Taproom at 202 S. Lake St., which plans planning to open in mid to late June. This will be their first expansion beyond what has been called "a resounding success" in Traverse City. And they're also planning a third location in Grand Rapids. The latest to join the Boyne City beer movement is another successful enterprise, Lake Charlevoix Brewing, which opened not quite a year ago in Charlevoix. Their second location will be called the Boyne City Taproom and will be located in the former Northern Table building at 220 S. Lake St. They also plan to open in mid to late June. All of the new establishments will also have food, and all are now looking to hire staff.

19 graduate as Leadership Charlevoix County completes 5th year
Leadership Charlevoix County completed its fifth year Wednesday with a graduation ceremony at Boyne Mountain Resort, which sponsored the event. The graduates were encouraged by keynote speaker Dr. John Jeffries, a well-known retired local educator, to continue building their leadership skills throughout their lives.
"This year's class is a fantastic group of people," said program coordinator Kendall Hayes. "They are smart, driven, enthusiastic and ready to take on leadership roles throughout Charlevoix County. I can't wait to see the things they accomplish in our community."
There are now a total of 73 graduates of the leadership program, which was started by the Boyne City, East Jordan and Charlevoix Chambers of Commerce with funding assistance from the Charlevoix County Community Foundation.
> APPLICATIONS are now being accepted for the 2016-17 program, which begins with an orientation in August and an overnight retreat on Beaver Island in September. More information may be found at www.leadershipcharlevoixcounty.com or by calling the Boyne Area Chamber at 231-582-6222.

Comments from leadership graduates
Three class members were chosen by their peers to speak during the graduation ceremony:
Alissa Post of Castle Farms updated the audience on the activities the 19 class members experienced during the nine-month leadership program. "There is no doubt we have grown as a team. We have learned so much about each other and developed skills to help us step into leadership positions. Each session taught us at least one quality of leadership, whether directly or indirectly. Thank you, Leadership Charlevoix County, for teaching us to grow."
Molly Hauxwell-Currier, special publications editor of the Petoskey News-Review, said, "To think we started as virtual strangers, it is amazing the bonds formed and life events that have happened since we met. We wrote up leadership plans and shared them with each other. As a group, our plans were personal, vulnerable, full of plans for the future and some full of tears. A very far cry from the program that I thought was going to be Power Point slides and dry sandwiches.
John Cool of Charlevoix State Bank explained the class project, which involved building three Born Learning Trails in Boyne City, Charlevoix and East Jordan. It was the first time in program history that a class had done a project in each community. The trails consist of 10 signs along a path that encourage children and their caregivers to observe, read, listen and play. "It's a great way for families to get outside and interact with one another," Cool said. News-Review story on this project.
Born Learning Trails open Saturday
Three new community trails geared toward families with young children will open Saturday, May 21 throughout Charlevoix County.  The opening day celebrations will feature snacks for children, media interviews and recognition of area sponsors.Built by members of the Leadership Charlevoix County program in partnership with Char-Em United Way, the trails are aimed at pre-K age children. They are the only Born Learning Trails north of Midland. The Born Learning Trail concept focuses on teaching, nature exploration and fun aimed at early childhood education. On the 21st, the Charlevoix trail will open at 10:30 a.m. at Shanahan Field, with similar opening ceremonies to follow at 12:30 p.m. in Boyne City's Rotary Park and 2:30 p.m. at East Jordan Elementary School in East Jordan. Walking along the short trails, children will see signs with instructions that encourage playfulness with letters and sounds and exercises to build pre-literacy skills. Activities like hopscotch, color and shape identification and attention to natural elements make the trails a perfect way to get outside and bond with your young child.

Mushroom Festival drew big crowds despite cool temps
Thornetta Davis kept everyone dancing
at the Craft Beer Block Party.
Despite cool temperatures, the 56th Annual National Morel Mushroom Festival was a big success, organizers say.
Thursday's Craft Beer Block Party drew more than 800 people, and although the sky looked threatening, it never did rain during that event. Everyone loved the Thornetta Davis Band and all the beer, wine and food choices. Another highlight was that we had booths sponsored by the two new tap rooms that will be opening soon on Lake Street - 7 Monks Taproom and Boyne City Taproom.
The Wine and Dine Dinner on Friday night was a sellout for about the fifth year in a row, and we had strong entry numbers with more than 200 people registered for the Guided Mushroom Hunt on Friday and 150 registered for the Competitive Hunt on Saturday.
The Taste of Morels in the heated festival tent drew a record 961 people to taste the offerings of 13 restaurants on Saturday. Everett's restaurant from Boyne Mountain won the $500 first prize from the Taste judges and donated the funds back to the festival's scholarship fund. Barrel Back took second place and Porter Creek Fish House placed third.
Friday's Guided Mushroom Hunt drew a record crowd of 240 mushroomers, most of whom took in Tony Williams' free seminar on how to find morels, held just before the hunt. On Saturday, It was a challenging day for mushroom hunters as only 21 of 140 competitors in the Championship Hunt  found morels in 90 minutes. Overall, the women hunters did better than the men, taking three of the top four spots. Here are the winners:
  • 1st Overall - Scott Neering of Tawas City MI, 80 morels - $100. Scott has won or placed many times in past festivals.
  • 1st Men - James Renouf of New Baltimore MI, 4 morels - $50
  • 2nd Men (tie) - David Neering and Paul Little, 2 morels each
  • 1st Women (and 2nd overall) - Kristy Szczeny of East Jordan, 41 morels - $50
  • 2nd Women (and 3rd overall) - Monica Duran of West Bloomfield, 8 morels
  • 3rd Women (and 4th overall) - Breanna Hitchen, Walbridge, Ohio, 6 morels
  • 1st Senior - Sharon Szczesny of East Jordan, 2 - $50 (winning for the second year in a row)

Rob Swartz completes 25K Grand Rapids run despite disease
From WZZM TV Grand Rapids - Rob Swartz doesn't care about achieving a personal record in Saturday's Fifth Third River Bank Run 25K. Instead, crossing that finish line means he was able to rebound after being diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease five years ago. "Basically, my immune system that should protect me started to attack my brain and my spinal cord," Swartz said as he explained chronic microglial encephalomyelitis. His life went from running long distances to countless brain surgeries and struggling to stand with the assistance of a walker. "I have to fight this disease every day of my life," he said. "But being able to run just brought back that freedom."
With proper treatment, Swartz ran his longest distance since his diagnosis last weekend, completing the 15.5-mile run in just over three hours. Story and video.
> Swartz is organizing the 4th annual Boyne City Triathlon, which will be held Sept. 4. Funds raised from this event support Team Lucky Seven, Inc. and its mission of "Racing to Fight Brain Disease."

What happens when a guest causes damage?
When damage to your property occurs, you may wonder, "Does my homeowners policy cover damage caused by my guests?" In general, the answer is yes. However, the real question you should be asking yourself is "Do I want to use my homeowners' policy to cover damage caused by my guests?" When a guest gets hurt on your property as a result of a danger they were not warned about, you are liable for their injuries. However, if a guest damages your property they, not you, are liable for the cost to fix it. Dealing with friends or family who are reluctant to pay for damages can be a sticky situation, but they do have a legal responsibility to reimburse you for the costs you incur. If they refuse to pay, you may have grounds for legal action. Call KorthaseFlinn Insurance & Financial Services at (231) 582-6512 to discuss your insurance needs and questions. Flier with details.
