Thornetta Davis Band headlines today's Craft Beer Party on Lake Street
The Thornetta Davis Band from Detroit will perform for the second annual Craft Beer Block Party this afternoon, Thursday. The second annual party moves to the 100 block of South Lake Street in downtown Boyne City from 4-8 p.m. It also features 22 craft brewers, two wineries, 3 restaurants (Cafe Sante, Red Mesa Grill, Thick 'N' Juicy) and 2 food trucks (Happy's Tacos and Littlman Bites).  $10 admission includes a souvenir beer glass and 2 taste tickets. Additional 3 oz. tastes are $1. Free admission for those under 21 who want to enjoy the food and music. Details at www.morelblockparty.com

8 p.m. - The Cookies perform live in the Festival Tent, $5.

7-10 p.m. - Morel Breakfast at the VFW Post, 1108 Boyne Avenue/S. Hwy 75
8 a.m. - Run For their Lives Humane Sociey 5k run.
8-9 a.m. - National Mushroom Hunt late registration at former Carter's Store parking lot, 1315 Boyne Ave. Buses leave at 9 sharp. $20 in advance, $25 on Sturday.

Downtown Boyne City stores will be giving away morels and gift certificates on Saturday, May 14, during the Mushroom Festival. The 6th annual Great Morel Giveaway includes 12 businesses that give away two pounds of morels each - or a $50 gift certificate if morels are not available. There is no cost or purchase required to enter - simply register at any or all of the participating stores. Every place you register gives you another chance to win. If you register at all 12 businesses, you will have 12 chances to win. You must be present with identification to win. Register by 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 14. Drawings begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, beginning at Freshwater Art Gallery and proceeding to other businesses on Lake Street, Water Street and Park Street. Follow the "Morel Mob" from store to store for your chance to win the morels. For information call the Chamber at 582-6222.

Run with your dog in Humane Society 5k on Saturday
The Charlevoix Area Humane Society Benefit will host the "Run For Their Lives 5K" run and walk on Saturday, May 14 during the Boyne City Morel Mushroom Festival, raising funds for the shelter and animals cared for there. Runners of all ages are invited to attend, as well as friendly canines. The event starts at 8 a.m. with registration from 6:30-7:25 a.m. behind the Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce. Runners can also register in advance by filling out this form and emailing it to pets@charlevoixhumane.org. The form can also be dropped off at the Humane Society office at 614 Beardsley St. in Boyne City. Registration is available 6-7 p.m. Friday, May 13 at the Mushroom Festival tent in Veterans Park. Cost to register is $25, $20 for early registered runners, and $10 for children 12 and under. For more information, visit www.charlevoixhumane.org.
Open house at Wildwood Observatory near Boyne City
The Northern Michigan Astronomy Club is sponsoring an open house at the Wildwood Observatory, located one mile north of Boyne City, from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. Thursday, May 12. The program includes a tour of the observatory and a presentation by Mary Stuart Adams, Director of the Headlands International Dark Sky Park located in Emmet County. Mary will also discuss the progress of the new observatory and program center currently under construction at the Dark Sky Park. Weather permitting, telescopes will be set up for night sky observing following the program. The Wildwood Observatory is a small private observatory built by Rod and Michelle Cortright at 1825 Wildwood Heights Road. It is used for observing and astrophotography.
> Directions: From Boyne City go north on Park Street, turn right on Wildwood Harbor Road. Drive half a mile up the hill and turn right on Wildwood Heights Road. The entrance to the Observatory 500 feet up Wildwood Heights Road, on the right.
