Some of the volunteers from last year's Buff Up Boyne.
|
After a long winter it is time to give Boyne City a shine. Buff Up Boyne, Boyne City's annual community-wide spring cleanup, will return from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 7. The Boyne City Main Street Program, organizer of the event, is calling all residents, civic organizations, and schools to lend their shovels, rakes and brooms to give Boyne City a shine during the annual cleanup. Volunteers will be sweeping, picking up trash and raking up debris from the city's sidewalks, parks, alleys, and along the waterfront. Volunteers are asked to meet at Sunset Park in downtown Boyne City behind the Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce to sign in, get instructions on what areas need to be cleaned, and receive trash bags and gloves. Volunteers are asked to bring their own rakes, shovels and/or brooms. Refreshments will be served in the morning and a barbecue lunch will be served starting at 11:30 a.m. For more information, contact the Main Street office at 582-9009, or email mainstreet@boynecity.com.

Farmers Market moves outdoors to Veterans Park Saturday
 |
|
The Boyne City Farmers Market has two reasons to celebrate. The outdoor market season starts on Saturday, May 7 and there is a new face at the market. Erica Tosch will be the new market manager, replacing Becky Harris who will retire on May 31. The outdoor market, open every Wednesday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at Veterans Park, will feature more than 65 regular produce vendors, all local. They offer seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs; gourmet baked goods and preserves; eggs and cheese; honey and maple syrup; proteins, fish, potted annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs, and cut flowers; plus a juried craft market with unique hand-made items for your home or a special gift.
"The farmers never missed a beat! Greens were available all winter and with the many hoop-houses and greenhouses the produce continues to be amazing," said Tosch, the new market manager. This is the 5th year accepting Bridge Cards. Customers swipe their card at the Market booth and receive tokens to shop with. The market also partners with Fair Food Network's Double Up Food Bucks program.
Market plans a season full of special events
A full season of Farmers Market activities have been arranged, including cooking demos with Frog Hollow Farm, Fustini's, Michelle Bommarito, Philip Munday from Hardwood Gold, children's activities, and live music every Saturday. The 3rd Annual Food Truck Rally will take place Thursday, July 14, 6-9 p.m. at Veterans Park. The Friends Farm Meals are also a highlight of the season, breaking bread and toasting the farmers and others who make Michigan's agricultural community so vibrant. This year's event on August 14 will take on a new twist with a tour of venues including Coveyou Scenic Farm, Blackbird Gardens, and ending at Walloon Lake Winery. The price is $75 per person.
Proceeds raised from these events will be used to help fund the Community Pavilion which will become the market's winter home. The Boyne City Farmers Market is a program of the Boyne City Main Street and governed by an 11-member committee consisting of vendors and community members. For a complete line-up of events visit www.boynecityfarmersmarket.org. For more information, contact Erica Tosch at 231-330-0139 or Main Street at 231-582-9009.

Main Street wants to get merchants involved in Boyne Thunder and Arts Festival add-on events
Boyne Thunder will take place on July 8 and 9 this year with many boaters coming in on Thursday and staying until Sunday. This is a great opportunity to take advantage of all the spectators who come into town to watch the boats take off on the poker run on Saturday morning. Once the boats leave, the majority of spectators leave too. It would be great if some of our businesses and non-profit organizations could create additional activities to keep them in town for the day. Boyne Thunder has reserved Sunset Park as well as Veterans Park, so there would be room at Sunset Park for additional fun events. Contact mainstreet@boynecity.com if you are interested in organizing and coordinating additional activities in town and/or in Sunset Park during the day on Saturday between the hours of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Details.
THE BOYNE CITY SOBO ARTS FESTIVAL will be family-friendly and we would like to include a scavenger hunt through our downtown businesses and are looking for stores to participate. We need 10 to 15 businesses to join in the fun. There is no work or cost on your part, just join in the fun by having a treasure supplied by the Arts Festival that the kids (accompanied by a parent) have to find in your store. Details.
