 |
| | Erica Tosch Farmers Market manager |
Effective May 1, Erica Tosch will join Boyne City's award-winning Main Street Program as administrative assistant and market manager of the Boyne City Farmers Market. "We are so thrilled to have Erica join our team. She is a Boyne City resident with extensive experience and knowledge of the farmers market. She owned Neighborhood Bread Company and was a regular vendor in the market for several years," said Becky Harris, current market manager. Harris is retiring as market manager and will work with Tosch through the month of May to ensure a smooth transition. The Farmers Market will begin the outdoor season on Saturday, May 7, in Veterans Park with market hours 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays and Saturdays through Labor Day and 9 a.m. to noon for September and October.
"Erica's background in owning a business, experience as a vendor at the market, and extensive knowledge in accounting, human resources, and office management make her an ideal candidate for our program," added Lori Meeder, Main Street Executive Director. Most recently, she worked as office administrator of F. O. Barden & Son Lumber.
Asuka Barden commented: "Erica is very bright and talented, and we were fortunate to have her on our team for almost two years. We are all going to miss seeing her every day, but are happy to see her getting back to her passion with the farmers market." Lucy Hartlove, Farmers Market Committee Chair, lauded retiring market manager Beck Harrys. "She has taken the Boyne City Farmers Market to a new level. Her passion, creativity, work ethic and discipline have been instrumental in making our Farmers Market the best in the North. We will miss her terribly but we know that she will remain very involved in the market at a different level. "
In addition to the Farmers Market, Tosch will be responsible for supporting Main Street events and volunteer initiatives. "We hope to have Erica begin to work with our promotions and design committees and get involved in the planning of some of our events including the Arts Festival, the Walkabout Sculpture Exhibit, and Stroll Through History, which are all slated for June," said Meeder.

City Commission on track to allow alcohol at sidewalk cafes
A large crowd turned out for Tuesday's Boyne City Commission meeting, mainly interested in two issues. A proposal to allow alcohol at sidewalk cafes was approved unanimously, overturning a decision made two years ago. The Chamber, Main Street and many business people spoke in favor of this issue. Final approval is needed on second reading of ordinance, but seems likely. If approved, the ordinance would likely take effect June 29. News-Review story. The second hot issue at Tuesday's city meeting was a discussion about taking a position on the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac. Story.

Main Street offers local façade improvement grant program
The Boyne City Main Street Program is accepting applications from property owners for its Façade Improvement Grant Program. "The purpose of the program is to encourage private investment through the rehabilitation and improvement of facades within the Boyne City Main Street District, to encourage good design and to preserve the architectural character that is distinctive to Boyne City", said Main Street board chair Pat O'Brien. "We have been very fortunate for many years utilizing State of Michigan façade grants, which have had an amazing impact on our community," said Main Street program manager Lori Meeder. "We will continue to work with property owners to secure these grants but our goal through this local program is to provide assistance for many smaller, yet very important, projects that may not qualify for state incentives." The façade improvement program provides a matching grant of up to $5,000 for façade improvements within the Main Street District. Individual grant amounts can be up to 50 percent of project cost. Recommendations for funding grant applications will be made by the Main Street Design Committee to the Main Street Board, which will make all final grant-funding decisions.
> Information and applications for the Façade Improvement Grant Program are available by calling or emailing the Boyne City Main Street Office. The application deadline for this round of funding is May 27, 2016.

Main Street wants to get merchants involved in Boyne Thunder and Arts Festival add-on events
Boyne Thunder will take place on July 8 and 9 this year with many boaters coming in on Thursday and staying until Sunday. The Boyne Thunder Committee is working hard on the event for the poker run participants totaling 550-600 people. In addition, there will be thousands of spectators who come to see the boats, the boat parade and the festivities around the poker run. This is a great opportunity to take advantage of all the spectators who come into town to watch the boats take off on the poker run on Saturday morning. Once the boats leave, the majority of spectators leave too. It would be great if some of our businesses and non-profit organizations could create additional activities to keep them in town for the day. Boyne Thunder has reserved Sunset Park as well as Veterans Park, so there would be room at Sunset Park for additional fun events. Contact mainstreet@boynecity.com if you are interested in organizing and coordinating additional activities in town and/or in Sunset Park during the day on Saturday between the hours of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Details.
THE BOYNE CITY SOBO ARTS FESTIVAL will be family-friendly and we would like to include a scavenger hunt through our downtown businesses and are looking for stores to participate. We need 10 to 15 businesses to join in the fun. There is no work or cost on your part, just join in the fun by having a treasure supplied by the Arts Festival that the kids (accompanied by a parent) have to find in your store. Details. The goal is to:
- Get local downtown businesses involved with art festival
- Get parents of the contestants into the stores and looking around
- Have one more fun, memorable, mostly do it yourself event as a part of festival.

The Buoyancy of Boyne:
What's the secret to Boyne City's surprising renaissance?
From the Northern Express: In the last 10 years, something has shifted in Boyne City, a community of just less than 4,000 residents. Visitors still flock to the resorts, but now they're also likely to be strolling Boyne City's downtown streets in the summer, taking in winter concerts at Freshwater Art Gallery, lining up for dinner outside Café Sante or checking out the renovations at the Dilworth Hotel and Glen Catt's SoBo Development. Some of those visitors will even consider moving to the resort town; Boyne City is one of the few Michigan cities that grew in population in the last decade, outpacing even Traverse City. So what's the secret to Boyne City's surprising renaissance? Full story.

The Whi-Ski Inn
Eric Jarema, Allen and Erika West
2670 Highway 131 S.
231-549-3346
Why the Whi-Ski Inn??? Well, first - It is pronounced Whiskey, or Whisky if you are Canadian.... It is a fusion of whom we are. While having a few names over the years, one of the longest running was the SKI INN, proudly branded in neon and still hanging in the bar today. If you haven't noticed, we are located at the bottom of one of the best ski resorts in the Midwest, and a long line of skiers have joined us and knocked back a few after enjoying the slopes. Also, our aim is to become one of the best Whiskey Bars in Michigan. The bourbon craze is on, and we are happy to be part of it. Stocking nearly 50 top-shelf bourbons, we want you to come in and see what it's all about. And lastly, we embrace our Polish roots, and the roots of our community. A little play on words, maybe brilliant marketing, we will have to see - that is why we are The Whi-Ski Inn!
We are located downtown Boyne Falls. Bourbon, BBQ and Beer! Featuring smoked brisket ribs, salmon smoked gourmet sandwiches and a wide selection of craft bourbons and craft cocktails. We also offer local beers on tap. Open 7 days a week: 11 a.m.-10 p.m., Monday-Thursday; 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday; noon to 9 p.m. Sundays.

Pied Piper Skatery reducing hours this summer
Pied Piper Skatery of Walloon Lake recently announced on Facebook that "Due to unforeseen circumstances, we will be closing the rink through the summer." However, a follow-up post the next day said: "I received WAY more response to our closure than I ever expected. It was amazingly humbling and very much appreciated. After talking with my family, we have figured out that we can open on some days when we are able to run it by ourselves. We will post "pop-up skate dates" when we know we will be able to open. We know the crowds won't be big, but we are hoping it will allow people to keep skating. The first "pop-up skate date" will be Saturday, April 30th from Noon-4 pm and 7-10pm. "We'll announce more when we are able to, so please keep checking back in on us and sharing our dates when announced," they said, noting that they will also try to accommodate weekend private parties and birthday parties during the pop-up dates. DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES - The cause, meaning, and importance of dreams and nightmares will be discussed at Lifetree Café on Sunday, May 1, at 6:30 p.M. The program, titled "Dreams and Nightmares: The Science Behind the Stories of Your Mind," features a filmed interview with Dr. William Moorcroft, author of "Understanding Sleep and Dreaming." In the interview, Moorcroft explains that sleep is critical for our brains to function and dreams are a way for the mind to organize and process information. "There are different components in our brain, and when we're awake, they function one way," Moorcroft says. "When we sleep, that functional organization greatly changes. Sleep is not a waste of time; it is a reorganization of the brain." Moorcroft also discusses the cause of recurring dreams and nightmares. Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting in the community room at First Presbyterian Church, 401 S Park St., Boyne City. Admission to the 60-minute events is free. For more information call Julie Hasse at 231-582-7983 or email lifetree@fpboyne.org.
