BC Blaze Robotics team makes World finals, needs financial help
Congratulations to the Boyne City High School BC Blaze Robotics team, which has been invited to attend the World Championship for the first time. But they are going to need financial help from the community - quickly. In order to attend, the team needs to pay for registration fees, travel to St. Louis MO and 4 days of lodging for the 22-student team. The World Championship includes hundreds of teams from all across the United States and 27 other countries - a terrific learning opportunity for our local team. The team qualified for the State Championship in Grand Rapids with their successes at the district events and was ranked 26th out of 411 teams in the state. BC Blaze competed at the Michigan State Championship on April 14-16 and finished 55th out of the 102 teams.
> If you are interested in helping make this dream come true, contact Karen Jarema, Blaze Coach and high school principal, at 231.439.8100 or kjarema@boyne.k12.mi.us. Checks can be made out to Boyne City High School Robotics.

Friends of Avalanche group organizing; Monday meeting planned
 |
| | The view from the top of Avalanche Mountain. |
All those interested in Boyne City's Avalanche Preserve are invited to attend an informational meeting about a "Friends of Avalanche" group that is forming for the 300-acre park. The meeting is Monday, April 25, at 6 p.m. and will be held in the Boyne District Library community room. Creating a "Friends of Avalanche" group was a recommendation in the recently completed Avalanche Preserve Resource and Inventory Management Plan. Rick Deuell, a local resource and planning consultant, developed the plan and will attend the meeting to review his report. Also attending will be representatives of the Top of Michigan Mountain Bike Association, who recently received approval to build several miles of new trails in the park. While the purpose and focus of the Friends group has yet to be decided, some of its activities might include trail maintenance, signage, advocacy, building relationships between the park's many user groups, and working with the city to assist with park improvements that were included in a 2010 master plan. This effort to organize a friends group is led by a small group Boyne area residents and park users.

Water Street Cafe reopens Saturday; Will serve weekend breakfasts
 |

Larry and Valerie Glasgow
|
Water Street Cafe of Boyne City is reopening Saturday and will be serving breakfast on weekends. Owner Valerie Glasgow said she and husband Larry will open the cafe from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. They will have mostly breakfast items on the menu but will also offer chicken salad croissant sandwiches, the Maurice Salad and Caesar Salad. Here is her announcement post on Facebook: "Alright, alright, alright already! You have succeeded in wearing us down! So, starting sometime in April, we will be opening on Saturdays and Sundays for breakfast. Everyone said, do it, but simplify, so that's what we are doing. We have streamlined our morning menu, but extended breakfast hours so you Sunday folks can enjoy breakfast at the Cafe after church." The cafe has been closed since Labor Day of 2014, opening occasionally for a few hours to sell pizza and a limited menu. The building at 113 Water Street, which includes two condominiums on the second floor, is for sale, offered by Marty Moody of Lynda's Real Estate at 231-582-9555.

Celebration of Life planned for Flo Davis, who died in March at 106
 |
| |
Flo Davis
|
Boyne City United Methodist Church will host an April 30th Celebration of Life for Flo Davis, a long-time local English teacher who died March 1 at age 106. The celebration will be at 1:30 p.m. at the church, located at 324 S. Park St. Anyone who knew Mrs. Davis is invited to attend and bring pictures for a memory board. Following the service a luncheon will be served, and there will be opportunities to share favorite stories of this special lady.
This passage from her obituary captures the flavor of Flo's personality: "She remembers her first date with the love of her life, Norman, as a cold ride in a Model A Ford with side curtains and no heater. She also said that anyone she married had to be good looking and and a good dancer. Apparently, Norm qualified and Norman and Florine were married in 1935 - after Flo survived interviews with each member of the school board who had to approve of the marriage of a single female teacher. She taught English to thousands of junior and senior high school students in Boyne City, many of whom continued to correspond with and remember her and visit her in her later years."

DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES - The cause, meaning, and importance of dreams and nightmares will be discussed at Lifetree Café on Sunday, May 1, at 6:30 p.M. The program, titled "Dreams and Nightmares: The Science Behind the Stories of Your Mind," features a filmed interview with Dr. William Moorcroft, author of "Understanding Sleep and Dreaming." In the interview, Moorcroft explains that sleep is critical for our brains to function and dreams are a way for the mind to organize and process information. "There are different components in our brain, and when we're awake, they function one way," Moorcroft says. "When we sleep, that functional organization greatly changes. Sleep is not a waste of time; it is a reorganization of the brain." Moorcroft also discusses the cause of recurring dreams and nightmares.
