The Last River Draw crowdfunding campaign surpasses its goal
| |
"The Last River Draw"
It came down to the final few days, but the Boyne City river sculpture crowdfunding campaign reached its goal - and then some. The campaign will support a project to create a life-size bronze sculpture of a logger near the mouth of the Boyne River drawing in logs, depicting the early lumbering era. With the crowdfunding campaign coming to a close, the goal of $25,000 was not only reached, it was exceeded with more than $29,000 raised. The $25,000 will be matched by two state agencies that sponsored the effort, bringing the total amount available for the project to $54,000. "We had such an outpouring of support in this last week," said Lori Meeder, executive director of the Boyne City Main Street Program. "I had multitude people call to ask where we were at and how much we still needed - ready to make up the difference, so that we didn't jeopardize the matching grant." The additional funds will help pay for permits, possible cost overruns and to support the city's Walkabout Sculpture Tour, which The Last River Draw will now be a part of as a permanent piece.
During the last push of the campaign, Meeder received a call from Bob White in Colorado. Bob had been watching the progress for several weeks and inquired about the benefits of the Lumber Baron $2,500 level. This sponsor level allows the donor to have their name on the plaque that will be placed by the river sculpture. After more discussion, Meeder discovered that Bob was the great nephew of William H. White, the lumber baron who is credited with starting the lumber industry in Boyne City. For more information on this project, contact Lori Meeder at mainstreet@boynecity.com or 231.582.9009. Boyne City Hall groundbreaking set for Thursday
| |
New City Hall construction will start soon.
City officials invite the public to attend a groundbreaking ceremony for the new City Hall, to be held in front of the old City Hall at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21. Last May, voters approved a bond issue for new city facilities that will house fire, police and ambulance services as well as the history museum and administrative offices. The old city hall will go out with a bang next week, as the police and fire departments will use it for training, which will include active shooter scenarios and smoke bombs being activated. Demolition of the old building is scheduled to begin April 25, and construction is expected to be complete in the summer of 2017. The police and fire departments continue to operate on the old site at 319 N. Lake St., while administrative offices have moved across the street to leased space at 364 N. Lake St.
> As part of the new City Hall project, Boyne City's century-old historic clock is being refurbished and will be put back into service in a replica of the original clock tower. MI News 26 video.

Friends of Avalanche group organizing; April 25 meeting planned
| |
The view from the top of Avalanche is featured on the cover of the Chamber's Visitor Guide.
All those interested in Boyne City's Avalanche Preserve are invited to attend an informational meeting about a "Friends of Avalanche" group that is forming for the 300-acre park. The meeting is Monday, April 25, at 6 p.m. and will be held in the Boyne District Library community room. Creating a "Friends of Avalanche" group was a recommendation contained in the recently completed Avalanche Preserve Resource and Inventory Management Plan. Rick Deuell, a local resource and planning consultant, developed the plan and will attend the meeting to review his report, which will include reasons for the large number of ash and birch trees that have died in the park in recent years. Also attending will be representatives of the Top of Michigan Mountain Bike Association, who recently received approval from the Boyne City City Commission to build several miles of new trails in the park. They will present an update of their project. While the purpose and focus of the Friends group has yet to be decided, some of its activities might include trail maintenance, signage, advocacy, building relationships between the park's many user groups, and working with the City of Boyne City to assist with park improvements that were included in the park's 2010 master plan. This effort to organize a friends group is led by a small group Boyne area residents and park users.
> The Avalanche Mountain Preserve comprises 300-plus acres of woodland located within the City of Boyne City. The area offers many types of recreational activities including hiking, biking, skiing, skating, running, snowmobiling, disc golf, and archery. For more information about the meeting, contact Susan Conklin at 231.675.0742 or email friendsofavalanche@gmail.com.

Ironton Ferry opens today; 90-year celebration planned May 16
| |
The old wooden ferry, early 1900s
From the Petoskey News-Review: Long before automobiles boarded the ferry, it was sheep, horses and buggies taking a short cut across the South Arm of Lake Charlevoix from Ironton to Boyne City. For more than 130 years, the Ironton Ferry has made the 600-foot trip across the Ironton narrows, carrying vehicles, cyclists and walkers. The short cut saves travelers a 20-mile trip by road around the lake. This year, the current steel structure ferry celebrates 90 years of service. To celebrate this milestone the Charlevoix County Transportation Authority has planned a rededication celebration on Monday, May 16. Full story.
