Farmers Market on Saturday: Greens inside as the snow flies outside
Despite the snow on the ground, the Boyne City Farmers Market is celebrating spring. This Saturday's vendors will have their tables, baskets, jars and coolers bursting with delicious foods. From a bounty of green vegetables (that's right - greens inside while the snow is flying outside), potatoes, carrots, dressings, baked goods, jams, ravioli, pesto, eggs, meats (beef, pork, chicken, turkey, lamb and fish), honey, maple syrup, cheese, pasta, pasties, pot pies, coffee, soy candles, laundry soap, apples or even caramel corn.
You can see why so many come to do their weekly grocery shopping inside the red barn next to the Boyne District Library from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each Saturday through April. Before entering the market, you can stop by the food truck, where you can purchase a sandwich made by one of our vendors.
So - pretending it's spring barbecue season - the market will feature samples of Cook Family Farms pork and lamb bratwurst. Website: www.boynecityfarmersmarket.org.
Bring the kids for a scavenger hunt
Of course, we love to have families enjoy the Farmers Market together so this Saturday we are calling all young people to bring their Moms and Dads, Grandpas and Grandmas and of course your friends to the farmers market for a scavenger hunt. Adult, you may be surprised what you learn! The hunt will end with something yummy from the market.
> CLUE NUMBER 1 - I am an event that takes place in a red barn in Boyne City, I am held every Saturday from 9 to 12:30. The barn is located beside the building that contains the most books in town. Where am I?

Defying trends, Boyne City grows while others don't
 |
| |
Lori Meeder: "We want to make our businesses feel like they matter."
|
From the Petoskey News-Review: Growth has been a part of Boyne City's story for more than a century, so at least to some extent it should not be a surprise that the lakeside community's most recent boom wasn't stymied by the Great Recession. In the early 1900s, the timber industry spurred growth in Boyne City. About 100 years later, strategic development and so-called "placemaking" efforts are driving business and population growth in and around Boyne City. "Our area has been a resort area for a zillion years," said Northern Lakes Economic Alliance president Andy Hayes. "Boyne City, over all that time, was really more of a blue-collar town. If you look at the last 15 years or so, Boyne City has really transitioned. People are discovering, 'Oh, this is a cool little place.'" Those who work in economic development, like Hayes, say the steady success is just as much about a unified approach as it is about opportunity and location. "This community understands placemaking as an economic development tool," Hayes said. "When they do stuff, whether it be the schools or the parks or the downtown, they understand it's all about making it a cool place where people want to live. It's not just for the tourists." Full story.

Free for Chamber members
"Grow Your Business with Email and Social Media" on Thursday
Mark your calendar for the Chamber's next marketing seminar at 8 a.m. Thursday, April 14, at the Boyne District Library. That day's topic will be "Grow Your Business with Email and Social Media." It is free for members of any chamber of commerce and $10 for others. Many small businesses and organizations find themselves seeking the right strategies, tools and tactics to make their marketing efforts as effective as possible. But between Facebook and Twitter, email and mobile, deals, and whatever new social network is rolling out that month - there's a lot to keep up with. And there are only so many hours in each day. The number of possibilities can feel overwhelming. This session will help make sense of the noise.
> Presenter for this seminar is Kim Schott, a social media expert who has been featured at several popular Boyne Chamber seminars in the past. Check-in and networking begins at 8 a.m. at the Library Community Room, and the seminar will run from 8:15 to 9:30. Coffee and pastries will be served. Strategic HR conference set for April 22 in Boyne City
The Northern Michigan Society for Human Resource Management is hosting Value-Added HR: A Strategic Approach" at the Boyne District Library on Friday, April 22. All are welcome to register and join the group for this program with author and speaker Sara Christiansen of Ideation Consulting. During her 20+ year career as a Social Scientist, Christiansen has worked with diverse companies in both the private and public sectors. According to Chrisiansen, the role of Human Resources is continually changing. From the early days of the "Personnel Office" when we strictly performed administrative duties - to the more recent phase when we've assumed the role of the "Policy Police" - HR continues to struggle to quantify the impact we have in our organizations. With the current push for Human Resources to offer strategic input and to deliver innovative programs, it is ever important to understand the concept of value-added human resources. This seminar will explore progressive human capital practices that will truly impact the results of your business by developing highly collaborative partnerships within your organization.
> The program will be held April 22, from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. The cost is $119 for NMSHRM members, $199 for non-members. An optional lunch ($12) and chapter meeting will follow the program from 12:45 to 1:15. Click here to learn more and/or to register, or call 231-409-2272. Pre-order your lunch by contacting northernmichiganshrm@gmail.com.

Radio Shack closing soon after 27 years in Boyne City
We are sad to report that the Boyne City Radio Shack store will be closing soon. Owners Larry and Phyllis Lenhart have owned and operated the store for 27 years. They and other family members also own the Radio Shack stores in Charlevoix and Petoskey, so you will still be able to find them there, and they own an AT&T Store near their Charlevoix store. Larry told us the store took a major hit a year ago, losing nearly half its revenue when Radio Shack switched its wireless phone partnership from AT&T to Sprint. They plan to rent their Water Street building to some other retailer and are now showing it to prospective tenants.

New date (Nov. 2) and new location for Business Expo
 |
|
The Boyne Area Chamber's Business Expo and Taste of Boyne, previously held in late April, has been scheduled for November 2nd this year. Besides the date change, the event has been moved from the former Carter's building to the Civic Center at Boyne Mountain. The Chamber conducted a survey after last year's Expo, asking exhibitors if they would like to keep it in April or move it to the fall. The survey showed that 39% of exhibitors did not have a preference, but of those who did have a preference, 65% favored moving the event to the fall. Several members said they preferred the fall because the Charlevoix, Petoskey and Harbor Springs Chamber expos are all in the spring. One exhibitor commented: "Our April date is so close to the Petoskey expo that it's challenging from a staffing perspective to manage both events, and there are members common to both chambers. Spreading the events out a bit more would give us some breathing room." This year's Boyne Expo is moving to Boyne Mountain because the formerly empty Carter's building is now being used by Spartan Stores as a warehouse/storage facility. Executive director Jim Baumann said that Expo exhibitor applications would be available this summer. Watch this newsletter for updates. Expo web page is www.boyneexpo.com.
