Carnival Weekend at Boyne Mountain

Carnival weekend details

Northern Table closes; Boyne City Bakery opens
We are sad to report that Northern Table restaurant and the adjacent Boyne Pub have been abruptly closed. We thought Mark Warner and chef Meghan Wruk had done a nice job making a go of it - the food was consistently excellent and the farm-to-table concept was a good niche. This location is a beautiful facility, but this is the fourth restaurant to go out of business there in the last eight years.
As one eatery closes, another opens - this morning! Best of luck to the new Boyne City Bakery in the totally remodeled former Johan's location at 110 S. Lake Street. The building is owned by Becky Harris and Tom Greetis, and is operated by Nancy and Don Hunter with French baker Gildas Berrou. They are offering Scones, Croissants, Breads, a variety of Gluten-Free items and many more sweet delights - plus Specialty Breakfast Sandwiches and Soups. Authentic Breton crêpes will be served every Sunday and on special occasions. Hours: Monday-Saturday 6 a.m. - 3 p.m., Sunday 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. They will also be open Fridays until 9 pm during Stroll the Streets in the summer.

No smart phones allowed for Boyne Spelling Bee Wednesday
The First Annual Boyne Bee will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, 7 p.m. at Friggy's SOBO Pub in Boyne City. This adults-only spelling bee will involve teams of two vying for the bragging rights to be the biggest Queen (or King) BEE in Boyne City. It's all for a good cause - to raise funds for The Last River Draw, a life-sized bronze sculpture of a logger standing on a log pulling logs down the Boyne River. One of the first to register was Chamber Director Jim Baumann, who boasts that he was the spelling champion of his junior high school in 1965. He attempted to enter the "Senior Citizen/Memory Challenged Division" but was told there is no handicapping system for this contest. He is challenging other former junior high school geeks, English teachers and newspaper writers to enter the bee.
You won't want to miss this hilarious event. Grab your favorite spelling partner and enter the competition or show up to cheer (or jeer) your favorite team - Baumann and "friend," Kiwanis, Rotary, The Spell Chicks, The Bleu Kru (aka Police Department), The Hip Bees, The "RE"markables (Re/Max), Keeping Up With the Joneses (Edward Jones) and many more. Don't even think about sneaking in your smart phone to help you with spell check. We will have smart phone police watching over all spellers. If you mispell (oops! misspell) a word, you're out of the game but not out of the fun. A plaque with the winners' names will be prominently displayed downtown for a year until they are unseated by next year's winners. Signing up is as easy. Click here for an entry form or pick one up at City Hall. The library will supply our mind-boggling words and Friggy's will have logger-inspired chicken, beef or vegetable pasties for sale. A portion of the pasty sales will be donated to the sculpture project.
The community is hoping to receive a matching grant of $25,000 made possible by MSHDA and MEDC's initiative known as "Public Spaces, Community Places." The community has 60 days to raise the local match of $25,000. An online crowdfunding campaign throughwww.patronicity.com went live on February 8. With only 22 days left, nearly $9,000 is still needed to get the grant.
> Visit www.Patronicity.com/LastRiverDraw for project details or to make a pledge. For questions, contact mainstreet@boynecity.com or 231.582.9009.

Boyne City may revisit sidewalk café alcohol sales
From the Petoskey News-Review: The Boyne City City Commission will at least consider the possibility of resisting an ordinance change allowing alcohol to be served at sidewalk cafés in the downtown area. At Tuesday's regular semi-monthly commission meeting, during the time near the beginning of the meeting for public comment on non-agenda items, about a dozen people - most of them downtown business owners, managers, or other employees - asked the commission to reconsider the proposal. Full story.

Circle of Trust retreat planned at Lake Louise in April
Patiently discover, wrestle with, and love the questions and soul stories that arise when we consider what seeds our lives are planting and how we are preparing to receive those gifts. That's what participants in our Planting & Harvesting Seeds of True Self retreat will have an opportunity to do. Those who have experienced a Circle of Trust® retreat attest to ways in which these times empower us to grow a stronger sense of living with purpose and integrity, cultivate our capacity to be more fully present with others, and live with an increased sense of wholeness. In so doing, we transform our lives, and by extension, the communities in which we live and work. Join us at Lake Louise April 18-20. Learn more at www.lakelouisecommunity.org.

Boyne Meets Bob fund-raiser is March 26 at Sommerset
Bob Wollenberg
For the past 3 years, former Boyne City High School teacher Bob Wollenberg has been dying from a lung disease called IPF (idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis). Thanks to the phenomenal surgeons at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Bob received a double lung transplant February 19th and is recovering very well. A lung transplant is the most complex transplant surgery a human can undergo at this time. Along with it, comes 30+ anti rejection pills a day for the rest of his life, years of rehabilitation and ongoing travel costs to and from Chicago. Bob and his wife Jackie will also be making major renovations to their home to accommodate proper air filtration and other safety concerns. Boyne Meets Bob is a fundraising event to help the Wollenberg family cope with these enormous and ongoing costs. It will be held at Sommerset Pointe Yacht Club from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 26. Boyne CIty area restaurants and businesses are providing food. There will be a cash bar (with some fantastic signature drinks), a live and silent auction (again thanks to many individuals and businesses) and entertainment by Dominic Fortuna, Lee Malone and some of Bob's cast through the years.

Both men share their insights about the historical Jesus and what influenced their conclusions about the identity of Jesus. Polls indicate a large majority of Americans believe Jesus walked the earth. But a smaller percentage say he should be considered the Son of God. Participants will have the opportunity to share their own thoughts concerning the identity of Jesus. Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting in the community room at First Presbyterian Church, 401 S Park St., Boyne City. Admission to the 60-minute events is free. For more information call Julie Hasse at 231-582-7983 or email lifetree@fpboyne.org.
