Officials from the county, city, DNR and others were on hand to celebrate. And in the background, construction was already underway by crews from Team Elmer's. This section of the trail is projected to be finished by the end of July. No smart phones allowed for first Boyne Spelling Bee March 23
The First Annual Boyne Bee will be held at 7 p.m. March 23, 7 p.m. at Friggy's SOBO Pub in Boyne City. This adults-only spelling bee will involve teams of two vying for the bragging rights to be the biggest Queen (or King) BEE in Boyne City. It's all for a good cause - to raise funds for The Last River Draw, a life-sized bronze sculpture of a logger standing on a log pulling logs down the Boyne River. One of the first to register was Chamber Director Jim Baumann, who boasts that he was the spelling champion of Morton Junior High School in Illinois in 1965. He attempted to enter the "Senior Citizen/Memory Challenged Division" but was told there is no handicapping system for this contest. He is challenging other former junior high school geeks and former newspaper writers to enter the bee.
You won't want to miss this hilarious event. Grab your favorite spelling partner and enter the competition or show up to cheer (or jeer) your favorite team. Don't even think about sneaking in your smart phone to help you with spell check. We will have smart phone police watching over all spellers. If you mispell (oops! misspell) a word, you're out of the game but not out of the fun. A plaque with the winners' names will be prominently displayed downtown for a year until they are unseated by next year's winners. Signing up is as easy. Click here for an entry form or pick one up at City Hall. The library will supply our mind-boggling words and Friggy's will have logger-inspired chicken, beef or vegetable pasties for sale. A portion of the pasty sales will be donated to the sculpture project.
The community is hoping to receive a matching grant of $25,000 made possible by MSHDA and MEDC's initiative known as "Public Spaces, Community Places." The community has 60 days to raise the local match of $25,000. An online crowdfunding campaign through www.patronicity.com went live on February 8. With just under 30 days left, nearly $15,000 has been raised and another $10,000 is needed. "This is an all-or-nothing campaign so the entire $25,000 needs to be raised by April 9 to receive the grant. We are geared up to finish strong during the last half of the campaign," says fundraising chair Lindsay Regan. "The community has been amazingly supportive of the project and we are so fortunate."

Irish historian Colburn will discuss "Michael Collins" film Tuesday, Easter Rising Wednesday
 |
| |
George Colburn
|
Dr. George Colburn, a historian of Modern Anglo-Irish Politics, will introduce the movie "Michael Collins" at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 15 in the Boyne District Library. He will provide historical context for the events portrayed in the Ireland of 1916 - 1923. Colburn will also profile the historical character Michael Colllins, whose revolutionary life is being portrayed by Liam Neeson. There will be one intermission after about two-thirds of the movie has shown when Colburn will encourage the audience to go home "before the Hollywood producers completely distort history after the Irish and British sign a peace treaty in December of 1921." For those who stick around, he will pass out a fact sheet to counter-balance the movie's distortion of the history of Ireland's partition, civil war and the "Troubles" that followed until the Belfast Agreement was signed in 1998. The next night, Wednesday, Colburn will discuss "The Easter Rising 1916: Its Meaning Then and Now," at 6:30 p.m. in the Boyne City Hall auditorium. Gaeyle Gerrie-Boss will open this presentation with some revolutionary songs from the Rising.

Boyne City Blaze wins high school robotics competition
After two days of intense competition at the FIRST Robotics event in Standish-Sterling, Boyne City Blaze and their two alliance partners came out victorious. In addition to the win, the team also received the Entrepreneurship Award and the Industrial Safety Award, both of which come with points that help the team on their quest to qualify for the state competition in Grand Rapids in April.
"To be on the winning alliance at a 40-team competition is a great accomplishment," said team build mentor Steve Jarema. "There were rookie teams there who had just built their first robots and teams that have been doing this for 20 years. We were pleased with the performance of our robot and were consistently ranking in the top two or three teams throughout the preliminary rounds."
BC Blaze was partnered with the NC GEARS team from Fremont, and the Freeland Fabricators, from Freeland, to comprise the top ranked alliance and the eventual winners. Other area teams, including Petoskey, Grayling, East Jordan, Central Lake, and Beaver Island, progressed to the playoffs but were eliminated in the quarter- and semi-final rounds. Full story.
> Anyone interested in more information about the team can contact the team's head mentor, Karen Jarema, at Boyne City High School, phone 231-439-8100 or email bcblaze@boyne.k12.mi.us.

Boyne on the Water plans improvements for waterfront
A detailed plan released Thursday shows how Boyne City will improve its waterfront parks. The project is called 'Boyne on the Water' and has been in the works for more than a year. The goal is to improve the waterfront in the community for both locals and visitors.
The Michigan Municipal League chose 9 communities last year and they provided expertise to help design the changes. Boyne City was one of them. Now the plan is in place, and those involved are excited to move forward. 9&10's Kalin Franks spoke to those involved and explains what the future could look like in Boyne City.
"The water is the main attraction to our community and many communities, and we are blessed because our downtown is right on the water." said Chamber Director Jim Baumann. Full story and video.

The February winner of the Boyne Appetit Wine Wednesday drawing was Julie Hasse. Julie has been able to participate in all three Wine Wednesdays and really enjoys the night out with her friends. "Wine Wednesday is probably one of the best ways to celebrate Boyne City and to celebrate the great people that live and work here. It's a new adventure every time and we have met lots of great people," she said. The first Wednesday of each month from 5 to 7 p.m., nine local restaurants and wine purveyors offer wine tasting and complimentary appetizers. The goal is to get people out and about, visiting the establishments and walking around town in the slower months of winter. Those currently participating in Wine Wednesdays are the Boyne Pub, Cafe Santé, Northern Table, Porter Creek Fish House, Red Mesa Grill, Boyne River Inn, Lake Street Market, The Wine Emporium, and Friggy's SOBO Pub. Boyne Appétit. is a collaboration of the Boyne Area Chamber and Boyne City Main Street. Participants receive a punch card with the names and locations of all the participating establishments. At each stop, featured wines are discussed and enjoyed along with delicious food pairings. For each stop, the card is punched. Once the card is full, it is entered into a drawing to win a gift certificate to any of the participating establishments. Punch cards can be picked up at the chamber or any of the nine participating restaurants. For more information, contact mainstreet@boynecity.com.
