Lowest city facilities bid just under $7 million bond cap
From the Petoskey News-Review: When Boyne City officials opened bids for the city's upcoming facilities building project earlier this month, the low bid came in at $6.89 million. The amount is just $100,000 less than the $7 million maximum borrowing amount voters approved in a millage election last May. At Tuesday's city commission meeting, city manager Michael Cain said in all the city received six bids for the work. The low bidder was Hallmark Construction from Traverse City - the same firm that recently completed the city's new department of public works building at the city's North Boyne Property. That project was paid for with money the city had saved up over a number of years. Full story

Jordan Valley Outfitters offers winter rafting trips
Reprinted from MyNorth.com: During the winter, many people trade in their paddles for skis. Not everyone, though. Jordan Valley Outfitters in East Jordan offers guided winter rafting trips December through March along the scenic Jordan River.
The local eco-tour business has been offering the tours since 1999. The current owners, Dan and Melanie Bennett, purchased the business last summer after previously working as guides and are continuing the winter adventures.
"While you're on the river it feels like you're in a snow globe," Dan says. "Our Jordan is very scenic. In the winter, it's nice to slow down and enjoy the ride. Also, there's more of a current in the winter, so we're not making as much paddling noise, and we see a lot more wildlife." Paddling experience isn't necessary since each tour is led by a guide who controls the raft. Full story.
