NLEA to conduct income survey of Boyne City residents
The City of Boyne City has hired Northern Lakes Economic Alliance (NLEA) to conduct an income survey of city residents. The survey is being conducted to gather information to help determine if the city is eligible for some future grants. All surveys will be collected anonymously and kept completely confidential. Depending on the survey results, Boyne City may be qualified to apply for funding that would assist with major projects that will be beneficial to all residents of the city. In March, letters will be mailed out to randomly selected households seeking their participation in the survey. In April and May, NLEA staff will make telephone calls and visit residents door-to-door to complete the brief 10-minute survey. Boyne City strongly encourages city residents to participate. An earlier 2004 survey helped the city obtain significant grant funding making several community projects possible. If you have questions or comments regarding this matter, contact Patrick Kilkenny at Boyne City hall - 231-582-6597 or pkilkenny@boynecity.com or Sara Christensen of the NLEA at 231-582-6482 or sara@northernlakes.net. Visit www.boynecity.com for additional information.
We need your support to make it happen
Last River Draw sculpture will be enjoyed for generations to come
Sculptor Martha Sulfridge with a smaller version of The Last River Draw
The Last River Draw will be the first permanent sculpture for our community.  The bronze life-size work will depict a logger standing on a log in the Boyne River, moving logs down the river. This timeless and classic piece will be enjoyed for generations to come. We are well over half way to our goal of the $25,000 local match with $14,400 either pledged or received. While the campaign still has 37 days to go, we need to continue to build awareness and create support for the project. The campaign is an all-or-nothing proposition, so we need another $10, 600 or we risk losing $39,400 (the $14,400 already pledged plus the $25,000 grant from the state). This makes the impact of every dollar through the remainder of the  campaign worth four dollars! Please help spread the word - we are getting really close and with the support of everyone we can make this a reality.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23 for the Boyne Bee Spelling Contest at Friggy's SOBO Pub.  Find your "A" student partner and sign up a team for what will be a hilarious evening of fun. Click here for an entry form. In addition to the entertainment of the game, participants and spectators will enjoy logger-inspired pasties (chicken, beef and veggie) with a portion of the proceeds going to the project. A big thank-you to all who have supported these efforts with a special thanks to Lindsay Regan, who has worked tirelessly on local fund-raising.

Friggy's SOBO Pub
5 W. Main St., Boyne City MI 49712
Phone: 231-459-4102
Email: leppala3@fast-air.net
The pub is owned by Jeff and Deb Leppala of Crystal Falls, and they have had a big assist from friend and Boyne City resident Chris Thiel, former co-owner of the 220 Lake Street restaurant. Jeff and Chris are friends from Dewitt High School in the 1980s. They designed Friggy's as "an old-fashioned bar" with pool tables and a menu and prices that appeal to local residents - $2 beers, $7 burgers, sandwiches, hot wings and "We do not have anything that is gluten free." Fun is clearly on tap when you see beer glasses imprinted with "Friggy's - When Life Meets Beer," a tongue-in-cheek nod to Boyne City's "Where Life Meets Lake" slogan of recent years. To turn on the water in the restroom sinks, you pull on a beer tap, and the men's room features television screens and urinals made from beer kegs. The pub is located in the South Boyne SOBO District of Boyne City. Hours are 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., 365 days a year.
