The Last River Draw crowdfunding campaign off to a strong start
In its first week, The Last River Draw fundraising campaign, which kicked off February 8, is $10,600 closer to its local match requirement of $25,000. If $25,000 is raised by April 7, the project will win a matching grant of $25,000 with funds made possible by MSHDA and MEDC's Public Spaces Community Places program. "We have had amazing support right out of the gate with several local businesses, organizations and individuals pledging and donating toward the project. Over Presidents Weekend, several fundraisers took place that generated an additional $1,800 in donations to the project. Boyne River Inn donated a portion of their sales on Thursday night, Cafe Santé donated a portion of their food sales on Friday, and a bottle drive at Family Fare on Saturday topped off a very productive weekend toward the goal," said Lindsay Regan, fundraising committee chair. Several more fundraising events are planned, including:
> February 27, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. BC Lanes and Venue Sports Bar will donate a portion of their food and bowling revenue. This will be a great event for the family to have some fun and support the project. Sponsored by BC Pizza.
> March 23, 7 p.m. Friggy's SOBO Pub will host an Adult Spelling Bee featuring teams of two from many of our local organizations vying for a top spot in the contest. Registration is $25/team with 100% of the proceeds going to the logger sculpture. Friggy's will also feature Logger inspired pasties (chicken, vegetable and beef) with a portion of the proceeds going to the project.
> A Penny Drive is being organized by local Girl Scouts with jars placed at businesses around town to drop your pennies in. "Every penny counts" is the theme.
The Boyne City Main Street initiative will create a life-size bronze sculpture of a logger placed on a log floating in the Boyne River pulling a log with a pike pole used in the early lumbering era.
> For project details and to donate, visit: www.Patronicity.com/LastRiverDraw or contact mainstreet@boynecity.com or 231.582.9009.

Dessert Contest, Chili Cook-Off are highlights of weekend festival
Despite the bitter cold, Boyne City shined on President's Weekend, embracing winter and celebrating everything chocolate. People came out to Old City Park to enjoy games sponsored by Genesis Church, bonfires with wood provided by Burt Moeke, marshmallow roasting and s'mores sponsored by Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity, hot chocolate and donuts from Family Fare, kids activities at the Boyne District Library, a chili cook-off at Coldwell Banker featuring nine samplings of amazing chili creations, a Chocolate Dessert Contest held at Fustini's featuring ultimate creations from 9 restaurants, and outdoor activities at Avalanche Park. The weekend wrapped up with a Concert at Freshwater Gallery starring Carla Cooke. "We also had a record number of businesses participating in Chocolate-Covered Boyne by offering chocolate treats specials and sales that always make the event special for our shoppers," said Linn Williams, chair of the event, which is sponsored by the Boyne Area Chamber and Boyne City Main Street.

A plaque was presented to Meghan as well as a traveling trophy that will include the winner's name and year.

Chili Cook-off - Thanks to our contestants: Boyne City High School Culinary Program had three teams, Boyne Country Provisions, Northern Table, Porter Creek Fish House, Red Mesa Grill, Friggy's SOBO Pub, and Cafe Santé, with music by Lon Kowalske. Proceeds from the cook-off will be distributed to three local food pantries. A big thank-you to Coldwell Banker Real Estate for organizing this event for the second year.
These events wouldn't happen without the collective effort of many, and we want to especially thank Linn Williams and Karen Guzniczak for their tireless efforts as well as the Boyne District Library and all of our businesses for participating and making it a great event.

Boyne Appétit! announces first monthly drawing winner
Mary Gergel, left, accepts $40 in Boyne Bucks from Chamber office staffers Melissa Jollette and Pam Chipman.
The first winner of the Wine Wednesday Monthly Drawing is Mary Gergel of Boyne City. Mary and her husband Jack enjoyed the Wine Wednesday in January and were able to visit all 8 participating businesses in one night. While they challenged themselves to visit to them all, she would not recommend this to others as they were very rushed. "We did not start off with the intention of doing them all but as we made our way along the trail, we figured we might be able to do it and arrived at our last stop right at 7 p.m.," Mary said. 'For the February event, we took our time and enjoyed a more leisurely pace. The ones we didn't make it to, we hope to get to in March," she said. Mary was presented with a $40 gift certificate to use at one of the nine establishments that participate in Wine Wednesday. "This was such a fun event and now we get the extra perk of enjoying another night out," she said.
Held on the first Wednesday of the month, the next Wine Wednesday will be March 2 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The program will run through June 1 this year. The nine purveyors currently participating are the Boyne Pub, Cafe Santé, Northern Table, Porter Creek Fish House, Red Mesa Grill, Boyne River Inn, Lake Street Market, The Wine Emporium and Friggy's SOBO Pub. Participants can enjoy featured wines with food pairings. Punch cards are available at all nine businesses as well as the Chamber of Commerce office. A drawing is held each month for a gift certificate.
