Crowdfunding campaign launched for public art in the Boyne River
The Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and Boyne City Main Street have announced a new crowdfunding campaign through Michigan-based crowdfunding platform Patronicity. The campaign will support the project to create a life-size bronze sculpture of a logger near the mouth of the Boyne River drawing in logs, depicting the early lumbering era.
If the campaign reaches its crowdfunding goal of $25,000 by April 7, the project will win a matching grant with funds made possible by MSHDA and MEDC's Public Spaces Community Places program. For project details and to donate, please visit: www.Patronicity.com/LastRiverDraw.
"The installment of this public art sculpture works not only enhances Boyne City, but also utilizes local talent," said MEDC Community Development Director Katharine Czarnecki. "We are excited to partner in this project and help build pride and educate locals and tourists on Boyne City's rich lumbering heritage."

Take a survey to help shape Boyne City's future
The City of Boyne City is conducting an online survey to identify issues that city and area residents are concerned about. The survey is a follow-up to a community input session attended by about 40 people on Jan. 14. Suggestions received from the survey and the meeting will assist the City Commission and other city boards and commissions in determining short-term and long-term goals for the community. At the January meeting, a full list of ideas were gathered starting out with over 40 suggestions, it was then narrowed down to the top 18. The 18 issues were then ranked to come up with a top 7. Post-Labor Day school start may be in jeopardy
Legislation being considered in the House would require Michigan State Superintendent to issue waivers to schools wishing to implement a year-round school. Current law requires Michigan schools to start after Labor Day.  House Bill 5193 will give schools flexibility on that decision - without interference from the state - and could mean school days are more evenly spread throughout the year, including the high-peak travel months of June, July and August.
The Michigan chamber has long supported the post-Labor Day school start law as a way to boost Michigan's travel and tourism industry. We are concerned about the impact HB 5193 could have on summer travel and tourism, the ability for Michigan businesses to hire student workers for their peak seasons and, ultimately, Michigan's economy. The conversation about year-round schools continues in Lansing, and the state chamber want to hear your thoughts and opinion. Proposal worries tourism officials (MLive)
3 Boyne residents included in PNR's "Top 10 Under 40"
Congratulations to all of the "Top 10 Under 40," as featured in the Petoskey News-Review - but especially Boyne City area residents Monica Kroondyk, Ben Van Dam and Courtney Angell Sumpter. Our future is in good hands with these bright up-and-comers.
In December, the News-Review asked its readers to submit nominees for our first-ever Top Ten Under 40 contest. The contest was aimed at acknowledging people in our area who are under the age of 40, all submitted by our readers. In total, there were 31 submissions and 26 nominees; some were nominated more than once. Out of the 26 nominees, a small committee at the News-Review picked the Top Ten finalists. They are listed alphabetically, as there is no ranking. Full story.

New mountain bike trails coming to Avalanche Preserve
From the Petoskey News-Review: If fundraising goes well, by late this year, cyclists and hikers could be enjoying the first phase of a new trail system at Boyne City's Avalanche Preserve. And it's not expected to cost the city anything to construct. At Tuesday's regular semi-monthly meeting, the Boyne City City Commission gave its unanimous approval to a proposal by the Top of Michigan Mountain Biking Association to proceed with a plan to install the new, professional designed trail system and the city's much loved and much used Avalanche Preserve park.
