Chamber honors community leaders, installs board at Annual Meeting
A crowd of 335 people attended the Boyne Area Chamber Annual Meeting at Boyne Mountain, enjoying great food and drink, entertainment and the presentation of awards to community leaders and organizations. Chocolate Covered Boyne and Winter Fest combine for twice the fun
 From February 12 - 14, Boyne City will celebrate everything chocolate and everything winter with events taking place downtown and in Old City Park.  The combined event will have something for everyone with kids' games in the park, kids' activities at the library, horse-drawn wagon rides, bonfires with marshmallow roasting and s'mores, hot chocolate, a chili cook off sponsored by Coldwell Banker, a Chocolate Dessert Contest featuring ultimate chocolate creations from 10 of our local restaurants, snowshoeing, sledding, skating and cross-country skiing in Avalanche Park, and chocolate specials and sales offered by many downtown businesses.    
FRIDAY - The event will kick off Friday evening, February 12, at Café Sante with a Fat Friday Party Gras Celebration from 3 - 10 p.m.  In case you missed Fat Tuesday, they will have Happy Hour Drink specials, entertainment, mask and bead contests and more, with 10% of food sales benefiting the Last River Draw Logger Sculpture project.
SATURDAY kicks off with the ultimate chocolate breakfast at Café Sante from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring Chocolate Cherry French Toast: Brioche bread, tart cherries, warm chocolate syrup and whipped cream. The Saturday line-up includes:
  • 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. - Children's activities at the Library
  • 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. - Children's games in Old City Park
  • 11:00 a.m. - 2 p.m. - Bonfire and marshmallows/ s'mores in Old city Park sponsored by Habitat For Humanity
  • 11a.m. - 2 p.m. - Horse-drawn wagon rides from Old City Park
  • 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 pm - Hot chocolate in Old City Park hosted Family Fare.
  • 1 - 2 pm - Chocolate Dessert Contest held at Fustini's Oils and Vinegars, featuring chocolate creations from 10 local chefs, including the Boyne City High School Culinary Arts Program.  Stop in and try them all.
  • 2 p.m. Guided cross-country skiing excursion at Young State Park with Jack Laurent.
  • 3 - 4 p.m. - Chili Cook Off sponsored by Coldwell Banker Real Estate, featuring delectable entries that you won't want to miss. The public is invited to vote for the People's Choice' award and judges will vote on Best of Event. Entries so far are from the BCHS Hospitality Program, Boyne USA, Café Sante, Friggy's SoBo Pub, Frog Hollow, Red Mesa Grill, and Sommerset/'Porter Creek Fish House. 
  • 4-7 p.m. - Complimentary wine tasting at The Wine Emporium.
  • All Day.  Avalanche Park offers ice skating, sledding, horseshoeing, fat tire biking and cross country skiing. The warming house is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with skates and sleds available for use. 
"Throughout the day on Saturday, our businesses will offer many great sales and chocolate treats. We are hoping to include a scavenger hunt on Saturday that will keep people guessing on where to go to find the next clue," said Karen Guzniczak, co-chair of the event.
SUNDAY, February 14, Café Sante will again offer the ultimate chocolate breakfast from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring Chocolate Cherry French Toast.  
The Festival will wrap up with a concert at Freshwater Gallery at 8 p.m. starring Carla Cooke on Sunday.
"We are adding events and will have a full line-up of all of the business specials and discounts, updated events and activities," said Linn Williams, founder of Chocolate Covered Boyne.

5 fund-raisers planned starting Wednesday for river sculpture
Local businesses are pitching in to help fund the Boyne City Main Street Program "Last River Draw" project. A life-size bronze sculpture of a logger will be placed on a log floating in the Boyne River pulling a log with a pike pole used in the early lumbering era. "The online fundraising site known as Patronicity (www.patronicity.com) will go live the week of February 8 and we have 60 days to get the local match of $25,000," explained Lindsay Regan, fundraising coordinator for the project. "Prior to going live, we are talking with community groups to build support and awareness and we have several fundraising activities scheduled." Here is the schedule of fundraisers planned so far:
  • January 27, 5 p.m. to close. Northern Table will donate 10% of all food sales in the main dining room.
  • February 11, 3 p.m. to close. Boyne River Inn will donate a portion of their revenues. 
  • February 12, 3 p.m. to close. Café Sante will host its "Party Gras Fat Friday" with 10% of their food sales donated to the project. Entertainment provided by Kellerville from 8 - 11pm, a Best Mask and Best Bead contest, with winners announced at 10 p.m.
  • February 13, 11a.m. to 2 p.m. Family Fare will host a bottle drive where all proceeds from the returns will be donated to the project.
  • February 27, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. BC Lanes and Venue Sports Bar will donate a portion of their food and bowling revenue. This will be a great event for the family to have some fun and support the project. Sponsored by BC Pizza. 
Oother support has come from The Charlevoix County Community Foundation which provided a grant of $1,500, the Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce has committed $1,000, Boyne Valley Lions Club pledged $500, Pat O'Brien $1,500 as well as many other individual donors. And at Thursday's Chamber Annual Meeting, many attendees signed a pledge sheet for a combined $1,700.

School board hires Thomas Ross as interim superintendent
From the Petoskey News-Review: The Boyne City Public Schools Board of Education has named a Northern Michigan man with extensive educational administration experience to serve as its interim superintendent. In a 6-0 vote at a special meeting on Thursday, the school board approved hiring Thomas Ross of Alden to serve as its interim superintendent while the board conducts a search for a long-term replacement for soon-to-retire superintendent Peter Moss. Moss' retirement is effective at the end of January and Ross will take over on Feb. 2. The district has  hopes to be considering a candidate in May and bringing the new person on in July. Full story.
The Boyne City Public Schools invite the community to give input on the hiring of a new school superintendent. Everyone is invited to a meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 27th in the High School Media Center.
Free coffee, doughnuts and lunch for veterans Tuesday at Senior Center
The community of Boyne City will be hosting a free social gathering for all veterans from 9 to 11 a.m. on the fourth Tuesday of the month, beginning Jan. 26th at the Boyne Area Senior Center. Coffee and doughnuts will be donated by supportive area businesses. The senior center will also offer free lunches to all veterans on the fourth Tuesday of the month, starting in January. The senior center is located at 411 E. Division St.

History Walking Tour is on the M'APP'
Kicked off last June, the Boyne City self-guided history walking tour now has a free app available for download in the iTunes store.  Search Boyne City in the iTunes store or download from this linkThe self-guided walking tour includes over 50 stops featuring the rich history of Boyne City's downtown.  In addition to the app for smart phones and tablets, a printed brochure is available as well as online content with additional photos, narrative and audio options. City Manager Michael Cain said, "We are pleased that the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Michigan Historic Preservation Network chose to partner with us on this worthwhile project, and we are excited to showcase our historic past with others. Absentee ballots available for March 8 Presidential Primary Election
Absentee Ballots are now available for the March 8 Presidential Primary Election. If you are a city resident and wish to receive one, click here or stop by City Hall to fill out an application, or call 231-582-6597 and the city can mail or email the application to you. Ballots can be picked up in person anytime up to 4 p.m. on the day prior (3/7/16) to the election. A voter who visits the Clerk's office on the day prior to the election must vote the ballot in the office; the voter is not permitted to leave the office with the ballot. Ballots will be accepted on Election Day until 8 p.m. The last day to register to vote is February 8, 2016, at City Hall, 319 N Lake St.
Briscoe joins Health Department as CFO
The Health Department of Northwest Michigan welcomes Mary R. Briscoe, CPA, as its new CFO and Director of Administrative Services. Mary comes to the Health Department from her previous career positions with the Valley Area Agency on Aging in Flint, where she has served for the past 9 years, and prior to that as the CFO of the Michigan Municipal League. She possesses a strong background in accounting, operations, and leadership. The Health Department is proud to have her on its team. Mary takes over the role from Bradley S. Rider, who will now serve as the Health Department's Deputy Health Officer, and who is also serving as Health Officer for District Health Department #4.

Boyne City's Walkabout Sculpture Committee is announcing a new photo contest. The photos submitted and posted to our Boyne City Main Street Facebook page must be a "selfie" with their favorite sculpture. This contest will run from until February 10 with the winner announced at the Chocolate-Covered Winterfest in February. The contest is open to all amateur and professional photographers. The Walkabout Sculpture Show, now in its eighth month, features eight sculptures of various sizes and media - life size to monument presentations, realistic to abstract, metal, clay, steel, iron and granite.

Avalanche ice skating rink set to open tonight
The ice skating rink at Avalanche Preserve will open for the first time tonight. The warming house is open from 4-9 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Come up and join the fun - there are free loaned skates and sleds (limited quantity). Call the warming house 231-373-3342 for condition updates. The city continues to accept donated sleds and skates for public use at Avalanche. They can be dropped off at City Hall or the warming house.
United Way invites you to "Toast to Literacy" event Feb. 6 at Castle Farms
Toast to Literacy consists of delightful libations from local breweries and vineyards as well as a delicious food competition by select caterers. Toast to Literacy will take place in the lower level of Castle Farms from 7 to 10 pm on Feb. 6 and will feature wine/beer/mead tastings, food, a silent auction, and live music. All proceeds will benefit the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, a literacy initiative sponsored by Char-Em United Way. The Imagination Library provides free books to children from birth to age 5 in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties. CHARACTER PARTY - The Boyne District Library will be hosting a Character Party for Tweens in grades 5-7 on Monday, Jan. 25th from 6 to 7:30 pm. There will be themed foods and drinks (Polyjuice Potion) in addition to music and activities based on your favorite books, television shows, and movies. Kids will use planning and problem-solving skills to design and build simple machines and experiment with many scientific and mathematical concepts in this hands-on workshop. Castle hosts Snowman Wonderland Story Time Jan. 30

MAKING PEACE WITH YOUR PASTA Vietnamese refugee who left Saigon hours before the capital fell will share the story of her escape and later return to Vietnam at Lifetree Café on Sunday, January 24, at 6:30 p.m. The program features a filmed interview with Binh Rybacki, the founder of Children of Peace International, a charity helping orphans in Vietnam. During the film, Rybacki says she decided to start Children of Peace International after returning to Vietnam where she witnessed the overwhelming needs of children there. Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting in the community room at First Presbyterian Church, 401 S Park St., Boyne City.
