Boyne City Bakery coming in March
The Johan's Bakery building at 110 S. Lake Street was acquired by Boyne City Bakery LLC on December 30. New owners Rebecca Harris and Thomas Greetis are busy renovating and updating the building with plans to open in March. In addition to having full-time baking tenants, they will provide a commercial kitchen to other food entrepreneurs, offer community food education and other hands-on events.
"Our vision is to bring back a working bakery and facilitate entrepreneurial food-based businesses with an emphasis on local ingredients. It is so exciting to be part of downtown Boyne City. Tom and I love this community and look forward to helping shape its future. We believe in a collaborative and competitive downtown environment," Harris said. She noted that "We are waiting to announce who the baking tenants will be, but their well-established and loved products are going to thrill the community. Customers will be able to take home products or they may sit down inside or out seasonally on both Lake and Front Streets."
Tom Greetis moved to Boyne City in 1974 to work at Courter Products, now Honeywell. As a project and manufacturing engineer he enjoyed a rewarding career spanning 36 years. He has served on the Friends of the Library, Boyne City Planning Commission, and volunteered as Challenge Mountain treasurer for over 15 years.
Rebecca moved to Boyne City in 1991 and worked at Harbor House Publishers until 2011. Since 2012 she has managed the Boyne City Farmers Market. She has been involved in many organizations, projects and initiatives, including Challenge Mountain board, Main Street Design Committee, Walkabout Sculpture Tour, SOBO Arts Festival, Stroll Through History and the Historical Walking Tour. The bakery will be open early morning until mid afternoon. More details will be announced in March.
Main Street kicks off fundraising campaign for river sculpture
The Boyne City Main Street Program has moved two steps closer to completing their exciting project called The "Last River Draw." A life-size bronze sculpture of a logger will be placed on a log floating in the Boyne River pulling a log with a pike pole used in the early lumbering era. The idea for the sculpture came from Anthony Williams who asked Martha Sulfridge, a local sculptor, if she would be willing to create and build it. "We have received the necessary permits from the Michigan DEQ and have received approval from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation for a matching grant of $25,000 through its "Public Spaces, Community Places" crowd-funding initiative. In a few weeks the online fundraising site known as Patronicity (www.patronicity.com) will go live and we have 60 days to get the local match of $25,000," explained Lindsay Regan, fundraising coordinator for the project. "Prior to going live, we are talking with community groups to build support and awareness and we have several fundraising activities scheduled," added Regan.

The schedule of fundraisers:
  • January 27, 5 p.m. to close. Northern Table will donate 10% of all food sales in the main dining room
  • February 12, 3 p.m. to close. Café Sante will host its "Party Gras Fat Friday" with 10% of their food sales donated to the project. Entertainment provided by Kellerville from 8 - 11pm, a Best Mask and Best Bead contest, with winners announced at 10 p.m.
  • February 13, 11a.m. to 2 p.m. Family Fare will host a bottle drive where all proceeds from the returns will be donated to the project
Other fundraisers will be held at Boyne River Inn and BC Pizza with dates to be announced. Other support has come from The Charlevoix County Community Foundation which provided a grant of $1,500. The foundation's mission is to enhance the quality of life for all citizens of Charlevoix County, now and for generations to come. "What makes our community really special is the caring and compassionate people that help every day with their financial support, time and talents," said Main Street director Lori Meeder. "Please support these businesses while supporting a great project." Anyone wishing to donate or learn more can email mainstreet@boynecity.com or call 231.582.9009.

HOW GOD FEELS ABOUT YOUR JOB will be discussed at Lifetree Café on January 17, at 6:30 p.m. The program, titled "Taking God to Work: How to See the Spiritual Significance in What You Do," features a filmed interview Doug Sherman, co-author of "Your Work Matters to God." During the interview, Sherman explores whether certain jobs allow people to connect with God more easily through their everyday work. "When we think of some jobs as being spiritual and some not, we are missing the fact that God cares about our physical needs, our emotional needs, and our spiritual needs," Sherman says. "While pastors may help us with our spiritual needs, the rest of us are focused on helping meet people's emotional and physical needs with our work. God cares just as much about our physical needs as our spiritual needs." Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting in the community room at First Presbyterian Church, 401 S Park St., Boyne City. Admission to the 60-minute events is free. For more information call Julie Hasse at 231-582-7983 or email lifetree@fpboyne.org.
