New Year's Eve torchlight parade to honor ski pioneer Stein Eriksen
From the Boyne Mountain website: This week gives us special reason to honor and truly celebrate the life of one of the most important individuals in Boyne Mountain's history, Stein Eriksen, who is also recognized as the world's "Father of Freestyle Skiing." At 88 and surrounded by his family, he peacefully passed away on December 27, 2015 at his home in Park City, Utah. A Norway native, Stein Eriksen's part in Boyne history was far from a chance occurrence, rather a calculated endeavor on the part of Everett Kircher. The two met in the early 1950s when Stein purchased a Studebaker from Everett's Detroit dealership. Stein won the gold medal in giant slalom at the 1952 Winter Olympics using his unique counter-rotation method of skiing. Everett learned of this and extended an offer of $5,000 for Stein to move to Michigan and lead Boyne Mountain's ski school. Stein put his acceptance on hold, continued training and won triple gold at the 1954 World Championships. Believing his amateur days were behind him, Stein soon moved to Boyne Mountain, bringing along other Norwegian instructors, and served three winters as the school's director. Paying homage to his contributions, it was Everett who chose Stein as the namesake of the lodge's restaurant, as well as the ski trail Stein's Mambo, and in 2006, Stephen and Molly named their third child after Stein Eriksen. SKI magazine named Stein #4 among its Top 10 Most Influential Skiers of All Time. Full story.
> TORCHLIGHT PARADE - Please join the Kircher family as we pay tribute to this iconic contributor to Boyne Mountain's celebrated history. This year's Torchlight Parade and fireworks display taking place at 9 p.m. during Boyne Mountain's New Year's Eve celebration are dedicated in Stein's honor.
> SNOW AT LAST! - Our out of town readers and skiers should know that the Boyne area received about 10 inches of natural snow Monday. Cold temperatures are also making it possible to add more snow, so ski conditions are quite good now. Visit www.boynemountain.com for details. News-Review story.

th annual Lights of Love benefit held December 2nd in Boyne City. The Boyne Eta Nu Charities raised over $3,300 for The Hospice of Northwest Michigan by people who purchased 98 lights and 41 hearts. The monies raised will be use for patient care in the surrounding communities. The event started out at the Boyne River Inn where Pati Scott welcomed the attendees. The gathering moved outside for the tree-lighting ceremony and a prayer delivered by Marilyn Rhadigan. Amy Wieland, Executive Director of The Hospice of Northwest Michigan, thanked the crowd for their support for the past 28 years of donations totaling over $110,000. Vi Riley led the group in song during the ceremony, while Bob Greene played Amazing Grace on his trumpet. Eta Nu Charities and Hospice of Northwest Michigan would like to thank all the people and families who purchased lights and hearts plus the local merchants who made donations to make this a very special event. Thank you to Karen & Ray Guzniczak of County Now & Then who hosted our tree, Dirk Lillie of the Boyne River Inn who hosted a buffet dinner, Andre Poineau who made the hearts and Boyne Mountain Resorts who donated the printing. FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS - A determination to pursue dreams even in the midst of difficult circumstances will be discussed at Lifetree Café on Sunday, January 3 at 6:30 p.m. The program, titled "Follow Your Dreams: Even When You Think You Can't," features a filmed interview with Mandy Harvey, a jazz vocalist whose sudden hearing loss nearly derailed her dream of becoming a professional singer. During the interview, Harvey explains how losing her hearing caused a downward spiral that almost kept her from pursuing any interest in music altogether. "I started not being able to understand my teachers talking anymore, so I started moving closer and closer to the front of the room," she says. "It didn't help. I got hearing aids, but they stopped being useful probably after a month. I figured that I would never do music again." Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting in the community room at First Presbyterian Church, 401 S Park St., Boyne City. Admission to the 60-minute events is free. For more information call Julie Hasse at 231-582-7983 or email lifetree@fpboyne.org.
