MEDC approves million-dollar grant for Dilworth
Officials at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the Michigan Strategic Fund Board have unanimously approved a $1-million community development block grant for job creation and blight elimination for the Dilworth Hotel in Boyne City. Officials from Boyne City joined Dilworth owner Bob Grove to offer support of the project to the MSF board. The community development block grants (CDBG) were created to help encourage private development in underutilized and vacant buildings. Redevelopment projects like the Dilworth Hotel have extraordinary costs above and beyond normal development costs such as environmental remediation of lead and asbestos, selective demolition and façade stabilization, as well as major upgrades for barrier free access and fire suppression systems compliance. Without support from funding options like CDBG, Brownfield and Local Reimbursement programs, investments in historic renovation projects would not be possible. "The need for public and private partnership is key to community development. Financial support from the state and local level is critical to make this investment financially feasible," said Michael Cain, City Manager of Boyne City. Full story.

Main Street kicks off crowdfunding campaign for Boyne River sculpture
The Boyne City Main Street Program is organizing an exciting new project called "The Last River Draw." A life-size bronze sculpture of a logger will be placed on the edge of the Boyne River pulling a log with a pike pole used in the early lumbering era. The idea for the sculpture came from Tony Williams, who asked Martha Sulfridge, a local sculptor, if she would be willing to create and build it. "This will be a wonderful representation and reminder of our lumbering heritage and an engaging way to bring art to our public spaces," said Lori Meeder, Main Street Executive Director. "This project ties in with our Walkabout Sculpture Show installed in June, 8 temporary pieces on loan from Michigan artists. This will make our first permanent piece."
"The Last River Draw" project is being spearheaded by the Main Street Design Committee. The committee is currently building awareness and financial support for the sculpture project. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation has approved a matching grant through its "Public Spaces, Community Places" crowdfunding initiative. Once a short video is produced outlining the project, it will go live through an online fundraising platform known as Patronicity (www.patronicity.com). This social media mechanism of fundraising allows community members to make individual contributions of any size through an online campaign. The total project cost is $50,000 and if the community can raise $25,000, the MEDC will match the $25,000.

Wine Wednesday kicks off Boyne Appétit! on January 6th
The Boyne City Main Street program and Chamber of Commerce are collaborating on a new initiative to promote the exceptional restaurants and other food establishments in this area. Called "Boyne Appétit!," the program is run by a steering committee consisting chefs, managers and community volunteers interested in promoting the Boyne City area as the "foodie" destination in Northwest Michigan. They have developed a logo and a Facebook page. Soon you will be seeing window clings featuring the logo and website on the windows and doors of local restaurants and food businesses.
Boyne Appétit! will kick off in 2016 with Wine Wednesdays, set to begin January 6. On the first Wednesday of each month, from 5-7 p.m., local restaurants and wine purveyors will have wine tastings and serve complimentary appetizers. Those currently participating are the Boyne Pub, Café Sante, Northern Table, Porter Creek Fish House, Red Mesa Grill, Boyne River Inn, Lake Street Market and The Wine Emporium. Nate Jason from Café Sante and Mark Warner from Northern Table are coordinating Wine Wednesdays and inviting other area restaurants to participate. "We plan to issue a punch card and once participants have visited all of the restaurants, they will be eligible to win a prize," adds Warner. he Boyne Appétit! Committee has been meeting since October and its coordinators are food writer and volunteer Cynthia Janssens and Alana Haley, the marketing manager of Porter Creek Fish House. For more information contact Janssens at 989-942-7265, cynthia2248@msn.com, or Haley at 231-350-2962, alana.haley@sommersetpointe.com.

Local voters like Trump; Clinton holds slight lead over Sanders
A Boyne Area Chamber online survey shows that local voters like Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and the idea of serving alcohol on sidewalks in front of downtown restaurants. The main thrust of the survey was to determine award winners for the Chamber's upcoming Annual Meeting in categories including Entrepreneur of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. But just for fun, we also asked who you would support if the March Presidential Primary were held today. Perhaps the most important finding was that 35% of Republican voters and 41% of Democratic voters were undecided. Of those who have an opinion, Trump led the Republicans with 29% support, followed by Marco Rubio at 15%, Ted Cruz 12%, Ben Carson 11.6%, and John Kasich 10%. Next were Carly Fiorina 6%, Chris Christie and Ron Paul 5%, Jeb Bush 4% and Mike Huckabee with 0.7%. On the Democratic side, of those with an opinion, Clinton led with 50.5%, followed closely by Bernie Sanders with 46.7%. Martin O'Malley trailed with 2.8% support.
Survey shows strong support for serving alcohol on sidewalks An overwhelming 76% of 360 Boyne Area Chamber survey respondents support serving alcohol on sidewalks in front of downtown restaurants. Of the total number of respondents, 140 were City of Boyne City residents, with 104, or 74.3%, supporting the concept. The City Commission denied a request to allow sidewalk alcohol sales two years ago, despite near unanimous support from the City Planning Commission, Main Street Board and Chamber Board. One survey respondent summed up the survey comments made by many: "Ann Arbor, Traverse City, Elk Rapids, Petoskey and others have wonderful restaurants with outdoor eating without problems. In fact it adds to the wonderful atmosphere we are generating in Northern Michigan and Boyne City. This is one issue where we are behind other progressive cities for no good reason."

Now it's time to take a selfie with your favorite sculpture
Boyne City's Walkabout Sculpture Committee is announcing a new photo contest beginning January 1st. The photos submitted and posted to our Boyne City Main Street Facebook page must be a "selfie" with their favorite sculpture. This contest will run from January 1 to February 10 with the winner announced at the Chocolate-Covered Winterfest in February. The contest is open to all amateur and professional photographers. The committee received 31 photo entries posted to Facebook in its first photo contest that began in September for photos of the sculptures. David Leaver won that contest with his photo entitled Draco Starry Night, which captured the Draco Viewer in the starlight. David will receive $100 and be recognized at the June 2016 Artist Reception. The Walkabout Sculpture Show, now in its eighth month, features eight sculptures of various sizes and media - life size to monument presentations, realistic to abstract, metal, clay, steel, iron and granite. Martha Sulfridge, said, "The goal is to create a new and fresh show each year and expand the tour to include even more sculptures and artists from around the country next year." An Artist Reception will be held in June to celebrate and thank the sculptors for the enjoyment the community received throughout the year. The reception will also introduce the new pieces that will be installed for the next year. A People's Choice Award of $1,000 will be presented to the winning sculpture at the June Reception. All the featured artworks are for sale.

Ridge Run Dog Park gets $10,400 grant for walking trail
From the Petoskey News-Review: Recreation projects in two Charlevoix County cities will benefit from two recently announced grants from the state's Recreation Passport Fund. Last week the Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced more than $1.3 million in 33 grants for recreation projects around the state. Among the projects that were awarded funding through the grant program were $10,000 for a new outdoor ice skating rink in East Jordan and $10,400 for a walking/exercise trail at the city's Ridge Run Dog Park in Boyne City. Michele Carter, one of the leaders for the committee that helps oversee the park and additions to it, said the total estimated cost of the trails is about $15,000. Carter said plans call for a trail to be established inside the fence of both the small dog and the large dog parks. Because of the costs and a desire to use more natural materials, Carter said the trails will likely be made out of some sort of crushed stone. The trails will include benches, and signs that denote the distance around each trial. Full story.

Holly Daze has record-breaking year of community support
Last Friday night brought over 340 community members to Castle Farms to celebrate a wonderful year of support for Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital. The area has embraced the hospital foundation's signature Holly Daze event as an annual tradition kicking off the holiday season. This year proceeds totaling over $185,000 are being directed to the upcoming expansion and renovation of the hospital's surgical suite and laboratory, and topped last year's record by an unprecedented 30%. Gifts of Love, an "auction item" where people's gifts or "bids" go directly to the cause, in this case toward outfitting the new surgical patient rooms, doubled from the prior year and totaled over $65,000. The Foundation also used the night to announce the beginning of the public phase of their FORWARD Campaign, which will raise funds for a new operating room, renovations to the surgical suite, and an expanded laboratory. To date, donors have pledged over $2.4 million to this and the other capital projects at Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital, which also included the new Infusion Center and Boyne Area Medical Center expansion that were completed earlier this year. The goal is to bring that total to $3.4 million in the coming months. The Foundation and its many volunteers are in the planning stages for a number of events over the course of the next year to raise money toward the additional $1 million goal. Community members are encouraged to participate and can make a gift at any time by contacting the Foundation. There is the option to make one time gifts or a pledge completed over several years.
> Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization working to raise and manage funds to benefit Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital. For more information about Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital and its Foundation visit munsonhealthcare.org/charlevoixhospital.

Christmas comes early for BCHS Blaze robotics team
Thanks to the generosity of Kelly and April Bellant, the Boyne City High School Robotics Program, BC Blaze FRC Team 4377, received a brand new trailer complete with team logo. The Bellants' son, Kelly, was the first 4-year team member of BC Blaze and a 2015 graduate of Boyne City High School. While Kelly was home from college at Thanksgiving time, the family delivered the trailer to the team during a November 24 work session. Both Mr. and Mrs. Bellant have been mentors for the program and have had a vision of team having it's own trailer, complete with logo, to transport the robot when traveling to competitions and other events. BC Blaze is extremely grateful to the Bellant family for their support of the program with their generous donation.

SCHINDLER SURVIVOR - The story of Oskar Schindler's youngest Holocaust survivor will be presented on Sunday, December 27, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. The program features a Lifetree exclusive: a film of Leon Leyson, who was 13 years old when Schindler put him to work in his enamelware factory near Krakow, Poland. Because of his short stature, Leyson stood on a wooden box so he could reach the handles on the machinery. In the Lifetree film, Leyson describes how the Nazis captured his family members, confined them in the Jewish ghetto area of Krakow, and herded them onto trains bound for concentration camps. "Suddenly, I lost my most basic rights," recalls Leyson. "I was hungry all the time and frightened all the time." Leyson describes how Schindler pulled him out of a line bound for the death camps. Schindler named him "Little Leyson" and showed him favor with extra food rations. After the war, Leyson moved to the United States. He remained quiet about his wartime experience until the release of the Oscar-winning Stephen Spielberg film "Schindler's List." Then Leyson gradually began to tell his story. Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting in the community room at First Presbyterian Church, 401 S Park St., Boyne City. Admission to the 60-minute events is free. For more information call Julie Hasse at 231-582-7983 or email lifetree@fpboyne.org.
