Main Street and Chamber collaborate on new Boyne Appétit initiative
|
| |
Owner Steve Rossi and Manager Kyle Marshall put up a new Boyne Appétit window cling at Cafe Sante
|
The Boyne City Main Street program and Chamber of Commerce are collaborating on a new initiative to promote the exceptional restaurants and other food establishments in this area. Called "Boyne Appétit!," the program is run by a steering committee consisting chefs, managers and community volunteers interested in promoting the Boyne City area as the "foodie" destination in Northwest Michigan. They have developed a logo and a Facebook page. Soon you will be seeing window clings featuring the logo and website on the windows and doors of local restaurants and food businesses. The Boyne Appétit! Committee has been meeting since October and its coordinators are food writer and volunteer Cynthia Janssens and Alana Haley, the marketing manager of Porter Creek Fish House.
|
| |
Owner Mark Warner at Northern Table
|
Boyne Appétit! will kick off in 2016 with Wine Wednesdays, set to begin January 6. On the first Wednesday of each month, from 5-7 p.m., local restaurants and wine purveyors will have wine tastings and serve complimentary appetizers. Those currently participating are the Boyne Pub, Café Sante, Northern Table, Porter Creek Fish House, Red Mesa Grill, Boyne River Inn, Lake Street Market and The Wine Emporium. Nate Jason from Café Sante and Mark Warner from Northern Table are coordinating Wine Wednesdays and inviting other area restaurants to participate. "We plan to issue a punch card and once participants have visited all of the restaurants, they will be eligible to win a prize," adds Warner.
A Boyne Appétit! website is being developed (www.boyneappetit.com) and will contain extensive information about each restaurant or retail business (everything from detailed hours to whether or not they cater) -- information that is not now available in any one place for visitors to our community. It is anticipated that in the spring a brochure will be printed containing all of this information to distribute to visitors to the Boyne City area. Funding is being sought to print this brochure. The initiative involves restaurants and retail food purveyors in Boyne City, Boyne Falls, Advance and Walloon Lake.

Experts: Boyne City's historic city clock a salvageable treasure
From the Petoskey News-Review: Boyne City officials and community members heard some good news about the city's historic town clock last week. On Thursday, Rick and Linda Balzer from the Freeport, Maine-based Balzer Family Clock Works traveled to Boyne City to evaluate the city's 1904 vintage Edward Howard clock to determine its condition and the feasibility of including the clock into the city's soon-to-be-constructed new city hall and emergency services building. The Balzers are expecting to have a report back to the city in about two weeks that will include cost estimates to refurbish and install the clock, including several options. Full story.
> Editor's Note - Long-time Boyne City history teacher Robert Morgridge is going to be giving us a historic photo for our newsletter each week from now on. Stay tuned, history lovers!

The town clock was formerly located at the site of the current Boyne Co-op.

Bob Wollenberg is dying of pulmonary fibrosis
|
"Help my Dad get his new lung"
Reprinted from the Help Hope Live website, written by Boyne City High School graduate Zachera Wollenberg:
My Dad, Bob Wollenberg, is dying of IPF - Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. His fibrosis is in an advanced stage and there is no cure. His only chance at survival is a lung transplant from a donor within the next year. The cost of a lung transplant can be overwhelming. My Dad spent his life helping others in Boyne City as a teacher, drama director and coach for 36 years. He has cared for Boyne City's community for decades and now he needs your help.
Lung transplants are life-saving, but financially draining. Even with insurance, my Dad is facing extremely high expenses including: relocation for up to six months near Northwestern Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, where he would get his lung; transportation; post-transplant medications of up to $1,250 a month; co-pays; and lab costs. I need to raise $15,000 or more to help make Dad's surgery possible.
To help with his expenses, I have established a fundraising campaign with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has provided community-based guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax deductible. Anyone who would like to make a donation may click here. Gazette story.
