Record number of shoppers and bargains for Earlier Than The Bird
|
| |
Gary. Alison and Mazie Mellon all dressed in their pajamas for Earlier Than the Bird.
|
Last Saturday's Earlier Than The Bird shopping event was a big success with most merchants reporting record customer traffic and sales. The event began at 7 a.m., but shoppers were seen lining up outside stores as early as 6:30. Boyne City Main Street and the Boyne Area Chamber organize the event and have always ordered 144 souvenir coffee mugs or shopping bags as giveaway items for shoppers who dress in their pajamas. But this year, the mugs ran out only 40 minutes into the four-hour promotion, so we took names and contact information for those who didn't get a mug, and nearly 70 people were on the list by 11 a.m. A second shipment of mugs has been ordered for those people.
Here are some comments from participating merchants:
Cindi Malin of CindiFranco's Cool Stuff - "This is our favorite morning of the year! Love feeding people our famous oatmeal so I know they have a good start to their day. We had triple the number of sales from last year. People were lined up outside the door, so opened at 6:45."
Mary Faculak of Mary's of Boyne - "Earlier Than the Bird was tremendous this year! Our first hour was rocking, and traffic was steady all morning and the rest of the day we had customers in the store without a break. At 7:15 a.m. on a Saturday in November, I stood on the corner and I was moved to tears, hearing the laughter ringing through the downtown from the many groups of people walking around in their pajamas. I feel so blessed, appreciative and fortunate to be a part of this community - the moment was Norman Rockwell and Currier & Eves all in one.
Jackie Wollenberg of the Boyne Arts Collective: "Our traffic was phenomenal compared to last year. Being on Water Street has helped our exposure and sales. We love our new spot and we are happy to be a part of the fun. We still had frequent visitors and sales after 11. People were pleasantly surprised at what we had to offer and our effectiveness in making the most of the small size of our gallery. My mom and I took a short break from our gallery and we hit as many stores as time would allow. We were impressed with the quality and quantity of refreshments offered to the early shoppers. Well done, Boyne!!
Lori Herrington of 52 Weekends: "We are impressed with Main Street and the Chamber - all of your events are very well planned and seem to work very well. Everyone that shopped seemed to be having a great time plus they were happy to find deals in their local stores. It was a very fun event."
Ivette Dixon of Smitten Designs: "It was wonderful - we had a line at the register from 7:30 till 10 a.m.

David Leaver has been named the winner of the Boyne City Walkabout Sculpture Contest. The committee received 31 photo entries, which were posted to Facebook. "We are pleased that so many photographers participated and posted amazing photos of our sculptures," said event organizer and local sculptor Martha Sulfridge. "This was an opportunity for us to encourage everyone to enjoy the sculptures and allow them to study the sculptures from a different, more thoughtful perspective." The Walkabout Sculpture Show opened in June, featuring eight sculptures of various sizes and media - life size to monument presentations, realistic to abstract, metal, clay, steel, iron and granite
> A NEW PHOTO CONTEST will kick off in January with a new twist. The photos submitted and posted to the Main Street Facebook page must be a selfie with the photographer's favorite sculpture.

KorthaseFlinn offers tips for preventing ice dams
Ice dams are typically caused by uneven heat loss from your home in wintry conditions such as snow, heat melting the snow, and cold temperatures re-freezing melted snow. The heat is typically caused by inadequate attic insulation or from warm air seeping into the attic from living spaces below. This causes the roof to warm above freezing temperature, which allows snow to melt and then re-freeze before it reaches the roof's edge. If this cycle repeats consistently, an ice dam forms and water collects behind it. As the water pools, it backs up under your roofing material and can cause expensive water damage. Click here for tips from KorthaseFlinn Insurance for preventing ice dams.

PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESS - One of the most valuable tools the Chamber utilizes to promote local businesses is our Visitors Guide & Business Directory. This quality annual magazine is a benefit of Chamber membership and is used to expose your business to thousands of potential customers. Our Guide has a full year of circulation, with 20,000 copies distributed from the Chamber office, at numerous regional businesses and at MDOT Welcome Centers state-wide. Our publication includes a buyer's guide that lists all Chamber members organized by business category. Char Shaltz, account manager for Harbor House, will contact you within the next few weeks to discuss options for promoting your business in the 2016/17 Visitors Guide & Business Directory. Char can be reached at (231) 582-2814 or visit harborhouse.com/boyne.htm.
