"Station Eleven" author to speak for Boyne Reads event Tuesday
"Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel is the selection for "One Book, One Community - Boyne Reads 2015." The highlight of Boyne Reads will be a visit by Emily St. John Mandel to the Boyne City Performing Arts Center on at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3. The author presentation will be followed by a dessert reception, hosted by the Boyne City High School Hospitality Class. The event is sponsored by the Boyne District Library and Friends of the Library, in cooperation with Boyne City Public Schools. Funding is also provided by the Doll-Loesel Foundation. "Station Eleven" is set in a world turned upside down, but is ultimately an exploration of people surviving and remaking their lives by preserving the qualities that make us human: culture, art, and the humanities. The questions raised in this novel will make you think about what it means to be human, why do we fight for survival, the human need to connect, to mark history and to create a future. We think you will love this book as much as we do. The library has multiple copies of the book and ebook, and they are also available for purchase at Local Flavor, Boyne City's locally owned bookstore.

Final Boyne on the Water session Nov. 17
After three public input sessions, a final plan for improving Boyne City's waterfront parks will be unveiled Tuesday, Nov. 17, in the community hall of St. Matthew Church, 1303 Boyne Avenue. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the session will begin at 6. City officials and a steering committee for the project are encouraging area residents to attend and to help spread the word about this meeting. Dubbed "Boyne on the Water," the effort is part of a grant-funded program conducted by Michigan State University in collaboration with the Michigan Municipal League. The team is using the input and suggestions gathered through sessions held in May, July and September - plus follow-up comments via email - to create a final design concept that will be shared with the public at this fourth meeting. Also on the agenda will be a discussion of next steps, including who will lead the ongoing effort, and options for funding. For more information about the project, and some of the ideas presented in previous sessions, visit the city's website. Anyone who has questions about the project may call Steering Committee Chairman Jim Baumann at the Boyne Area Chamber, 231-582-6222, or Barb Brooks at Boyne City Hall, 231-582-6597.

Court Street repaving finished; Ribbon cutting set for Tuesday
The City of Boyne City and Evangeline Township invite the public to a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the newly paved Court Street. The ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the corner of Court Street and Hawk Ridge Drive. The $890,000 project was a joint effort between the city and the township. About $714,000 in federal and state grants helped finance the project. City Manager Michael Cain said, "The completion of this long anticipated project marks the removal of the longest portion of unpaved road in the City of Boyne City. Due to the topography around this street it was the site of frequent and serious washouts due to the high volume of storm water that ended up following the street. The combination of paving, curb and gutter and storm water collection systems incorporated this project will mean a safer year round driving surface and better and cleaner handling of storm water which ultimately makes it way to Lake Charlevoix."
LOW WATER PRESSURE POSSIBLE - From Nov. 2-13, Wach Water, a contractor for the City of Boyne City, will be doing valve maintenance work that may result in short periods (15 to 30 minutes) of low or no water pressure for some city water customers. Some may also briefly see some sediment in their water, which is normal and safe, although this is unlikely for most customers. If you have any questions, comments or concerns call the Boyne City Hall at 231.582.6597. News-Review story.
