What's the state of the community? "Striving to be the best is in our DNA"
From the Petoskey News-Review: Any community has its share of ups and downs each year, but for Boyne City there were more ups over the past year, area leaders said Thursday. That was the tenor of the comments offered by four officials at the Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce's annual State of the Community event that took place at Boyne Mountain in Boyne Falls. Full story.
> City Manager Michael Cain said, "What I believe makes Boyne City so successful is our willingness to look at each opportunity that comes before us carefully and see if there is a way for us to get to 'yes.' .... Imagine if Boyne City had said NO to Red Mesa, NO to a new high school, NO to an improved library, NO to a sewer agreement with Boyne Mountain, NO to becoming a Main Street Community, NO to Stroll the Streets, NO to Boyne Thunder, NO to qualifying for and then applying for grants that have transformed Boyne City into what it is today." Full text of remarks.
> Boyne City School Superintendent Peter Moss said, "Our enrollment is nearly identical to this time a year ago... more importantly, the district surpassed its budgeted enrollment by 25 full-time equivalencies. This is incredible news. Lately, the media has been reporting decreasing enrollment in many of area's schools. Boyne City continues to defy the trends -at least we did for this year. City and Boyne Boat Yard partner to offer rides to top of Avalanche
The Boyne City Police Department is partnering with Boyne Boat Yard to offer rides to the top of Avalanche Preserve for mobility impaired individuals from 10 a.m. to 12 noon this Saturday, Oct. 17. The scenery is spectacular this time of year and some people are not able to take advantage of the view because of their physical limitations. Boyne Boat Yard Manager Charlie Harrett had the idea when he asked about getting his disabled son to the top of Avalanche. The top of the hill is reachable by a narrow gravel trail, which is gated because vehicles are prohibited. The normally locked gate will be opened by the Police Department Saturday. Police officers and Harrett will drive the vehicles to the top. Boyne Boat Yard is making 4-wheel-drive trucks available for the day. Mobility impaired individuals interested in a ride to the top should be at the Avalanche Preserve parking lot between 10 and 11:45 a.m. The parking lot is at the south end of Wilson St. Individuals must be able to ride in a vehicle seat. The city hopes to make this an annual event during the color season.
