Reservations due Monday: Get an update on the State of the Community Thursday
Everyone in the community is invited to attend the Boyne Area Chamber's 7th annual State of the Community luncheon, presented by 4Front Credit Union. This year's event will be held in the Vienna Room at Boyne Mountain Resort from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15. Speakers will be (pictured above, from left) Boyne City Manager Mike Cain, County Commissioner Chris Christensen, School Superintendent Peter Moss, and Main Street Executive Director Lori Meeder.
Admission is $20, which includes salad, deli sandwich buffet, potato chips, assorted dessert bars, iced tea, coffee, tax and gratuity. Table sponsorships, which include eight seats, table sign and introductions at the event, are available for $210. Table sponsors so far include:

Congratulations to the winners of the Harvest Festival Scarecrow Contest. Boyne City Hardware took first place in the Business category, with Red Mesa Grill placing second and FirstMerit Bank third. Other entries included Boyne Country Propane, Café Sante, Enchanted Closet Resale, Kilwin's, Northern Michigan Escapes, Progressive Dental and State Farm Insurance/ Mark Patrick. Clare Brady took first place in the Resident category her her "Think Pink For a Cure" entry.
In the Organizations category, the Charlevoix Area Humane Society was the first place winner with its entry at the lamppost in front of Boyne Country Provisions. Second place was the City of Boyne City, and the Boyne Valley Garden Club took third place. Other participants included Boyne City Girl Scouts, the North Central College Fab Lab and the Northern Michigan Cancer Crusaders. Thanks to our judges, Scott MacKenzie, Heather Leigh from Lite 96 Radio, and local artist Jerry Douglas. MacKenzie recused himself from voting on the Humane Society entry.

Pie-baking contest was a tasty addition to the Harvest Festival
Coldwell Banker Schmidt Realtors sends out "a great big thank you to all who attended our Pie Baking/Pie Eating Contest at last week's Harvest Festival." There were eight entries in the pie-baking contest. First place winner was Bev Paquette, 2nd place was Ella McPherson and 3rd place went to Darlene Wolfbauer. Other entries came from local restaurants Barrel Back, Cafe Sante, Porter Creek Fish House and Red Mesa Mesa Grill. Thanks also go to judges Dave Bricker, Patty Furtaw and Betsy Kass. First place in the Pie Eating Contest went to Jacob, and he was a very happy boy! All other participants went home with a pie donated by Family Fare and a banana split certificate donated by Parkside Grill & Treats. Rambler Sports Network will broadcast Homecoming game
The Rambler Sports Network will broadcast Friday night's 7 p.m. Boyne City football game when the 5-1 Ramblers meet the 1-5 Benzie Central Huskies. The broadcast goes live at 6:45 and will include the game, the newest Boyne City Hall of Fame Inductee, the Homecoming Court proceedings, the Crucial Catch Cancer Awareness Presentations and more.

Eta Nu's Dressed For Chill project keeps kids warm this winter

Crisp air, colorful leaves and Dress for Chill.... sure signs of Fall in Boyne City. The Eta Nu Women's Organization "Dressed For Chill" project as begun. They work to distribute new winter outerwear for students in need at the Boyne City Elementary School. This is the eighth year Eta Nu Women have continued this community project, fitting over more than 115 students last year. This year, they will pick up another 36 students at the BC Education Center. Committee members work together on raising money in the community, organizing, shopping, distributing and fitting the new jackets, snow pants, boots, hats and mittens, in coordination with the school. Funds are raised through donations from community organizations, businesses, individuals and grants. Donation canisters have been distributed to several businesses in the community. According to chairperson Nancy Shear, "Some donations have already been received for this year's project prior to the official kickoff!" Donations are tax-deductible. Checks may be made out to Eta Nu Charities, and sent to PO Box 133, Boyne City MI 49712. Also, individual contributions to United Way can be directed specifically for Eta Nu Charities/Dressed For Chill.

Legion Auxiliary plans Freedom Run to celebrate Veterans Day
The Boyne City American Legion Auxiliary is organizing the first Boyne City Freedom Run at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, to celebrate Veterans Day. Participants can run or walk one mile or 5 kilometers side-by-side with veterans from all branches of the military. The freedom run starts at Veterans Memorial Park and the entry fee is $20 and includes a Freedom Run T-shirt. Children 13 and under participate for free and will receive a participation medal; for $7 they can get an event T-shirt. Boyne City Community Playground Volunteer Cleanup Day set for Oct. 17
The Boyne City Community Playground needs your help. Volunteers are needed to help remove wood chips from the Community Playground in Veterans Park. A Volunteer Cleanup Day has been scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. until finished. The wood chips will be loaded into dumpsters and taken to a disposal facility. Long pants, long sleeves, and closed-toed shoes are required; gloves will be provided. No children under the age of 12 years old. Volunteers are encouraged to bring wheelbarrows, rakes, pitchforks and other helpful hand tools to assist with the cleanup. New office for Hubble Insurance
Hubble Insurance Agency has moved to a new office at 203 River Street, next to Moskal Chiropractic. Bruce Hubble, pictured at right, has owned the agency since 2005; it was formerly known as the Shanley-VanTreese Agency and has had an office in Boyne City since 1996. The Petoskey location is located at 2409 Charlevoix Ave., just west of the fairgrounds. All three of their licensed agents are from Boyne City - Bruce, his son Adam and Erika Fettig. City to pick up leaves starting Monday
The City of Boyne City will pick up leaves Mondays and Fridays from Oct. 12 to Nov. 9. Please set bagged leaves curbside anytime after the first day of pick up, in clearly marked biodegradable paper bags. City crews will pick up bags as time allows. If your bags have been out for an extended period of time and have not been collected, notify City Hall at 582-6597. Biodegradable paper bags are available locally at Boyne City Hardware, Boyne Co-op and other sources. The city asks that you put only leaves in bags as the bags are not strong enough to hold sticks, sand or stones, and will tear upon lifting. Brush will not be picked up curbside, but may be brought to the North Boyne Compost Site. You may haul your own leaves, either bagged in biodegradable bags or unbagged, to the compost site on Robinson Street, open seven days a week.

Main Street accepting board applications
The Boyne City Main Street Program is now accepting applications for its Board of Directors. Through community partnerships and a shared vision for the future, Main Street works to keep downtown Boyne City vibrant and successful while preserving its historic heritage and supporting sustainable projects. The Boyne City Main Street Program/Downtown Development Authority is governed by a nine-member board appointed by the city commission. The majority of board members should be business owners or building owners within the DDA district. The board meets monthly at 8:30 a.m. on the first Thursday of the month and board terms are four years. If interested, visit city hall or click here to fill out an application. "Resources to grow your business" free forum set for Oct. 20
Northern Lakes Economic Alliance (NLEA) and Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) have partnered to offer businesses an opportunity to learn about programs available to help their businesses grow and become more efficient. The Pure Michigan Business Connect Forum - Resources To Grow Your Business is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 20 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Odawa Hotel (not the casino) in Petoskey. College Night Oct. 14 at North Central
North Central Michigan College invites high school juniors and seniors and their parents to College Night, Wednesday, Oct. 14. The event will be held on the Petoskey campus in the Student and Community Resource Center from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. High school students and parents can meet with representatives from more than 50 public and private colleges and universities from throughout the Midwest about higher education options, admission requirements, programs of study, costs of college, campus activities and residence life. Armed Forces representatives will also be available. A North Central financial aid advisor will be present to answer questions about federal financial aid for college. The program is offered to the community by North Central as a free service for college-bound students and families, and is supported by the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers.

Wellness Wednesday is next week at Boyne Area Medical
Charlevoix Area Hospital's next "Wellness Wednesday" will be from 8 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Boyne Area Medical Center, 223 N. Park St. in Boyne City. The Wellness Wednesday Health Screens include: Total Cholesterol, HDL, TC/HDL Ratio, Glucose level, Body Mass Index (BMI) score, Fat Percentage, and a Blood Pressure reading. No fasting required. However, if you are fasting an LDL and Triglyceride reading can also be obtained. Cost for the service is $15. Hemoglobin A1C Levels can also be done for known or borderline diabetics for an additional $5. Participants will receive a blood pressure log and all test results at the time of the screening. Health consultation and educational materials will be tailored to individual results. No appointment is necessary. MacGregor supports Boyne Falls Robotics and Cancer Crusaders
During the month of October, MacGregor Cares will match the total collected donations up to $500, which will be donated to the Northern Michigan Cancer Crusaders. NMCC is a local group that helps those fighting cancer with immediate needs, such as medicine and gas cards. All donations stay locally and the group is run by volunteers. Costume parade, haunted house return to downtown Oct. 31
Start Halloween night with downtown Boyne City's annual costume parade. Everyone is welcome; young, old or 4-legged - come and join the fun! Bring a chair if you prefer to watch all the great costumes. Line-up begins in front of CindiFranco's, 309 S. Lake St. at 4:30 p.m., parade begins at 4:45 and will wind around downtown, ending at the entrances to the Fire Department's Haunted House at the Library Red Barn. The Library Community Room will be open for trick-or-treating until 6 p.m. Just one block down, the First Presbyterian Church will feature the famous Trunk or Treat. The Nightmare returns to Challenge Mountain on weekends
"The Nightmare at Challenge Mountain," a weekend haunted house experience returns every Friday and Saturday in October, from 7 to 10 p.m. at 2205 Springbrook Road, Boyne Falls. Camp Daggett to host Fall Festival Sunday
The Fall Festival is back at beautiful Camp Daggett on Walloon Lake on Sunday, Oct. 11 from noon to 5 p.m. Fall is the perfect time to visit Camp Daggett. High school sports boosters invite you to join them for the Boyne Battle of the Sexes Golf Fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 10th at Boyne Mountain. Teams will be playing for their favorite guys or girls sports team and competing to win $500 for the program of their choice. Coming Saturday: Peter and the Wolf ... and the orchestra
The fantastic story of Peter and the Wolf, told by Sheridan School Principal Patrick Bevier and the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra, will be presented at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 at the John M. Hall Auditorium at Bay View in Petoskey. Hear about Peter's adventures in the woods and how the hunters deal with the wolf and save Peter. Instruments of the orchestra will represent Peter, the Wolf, a bird, a cat, and an unfortunate duck. Please join us in this wonderful story and demonstration of the instruments of the orchestra. Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev wrote the story and the music for the Central Children's Theater of Moscow in 1936 and it has been a favorite of film animation and concert audiences ever since. Walkabout Sculpture photo contest continues til Nov. 1
Boyne City's Walkabout Sculpture Committee is kicking off a photography contest open to all amateur or professional photographers to capture their favorite sculpture and post it on the Boyne City Main Street Facebook page. The photo contest will run from now until Nov. 1, with the winner announced and recognized at the June 2016 Artist Reception. The winner will be chosen by the Walkabout Committee and will receive a cash prize of $100 in addition to recognition at the Artist Reception, local media, newsletters and websites. The June installation of the Walkabout Sculpture Show with eight beautiful sculptures in and around downtown Boyne City has created a local buzz. The Walkabout Committee is also encouraging people to vote for their favorite sculpture online at www.walkaboutsculptureshow.com or by picking up a brochure at a downtown business, taking a tour of the pieces and completing the ballot. Equine Therapy plans Pumpkin Fundraiser and Open House
Northern Equine Therapy is planning a Fall Pumpkin Fundraiser and Open House from 12 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at their location, 05025 Church Road, Boyne City. A full day of fall family fun is planned, including a family friend Spooky Horse BArn, farm animals, games, wheelchair-accessible hay rides, silent auction, food and the opportunity to meet the therapy horses. Executive Director Courtney Sumpter invites everyone to "Help us carve 100 pumpkins to create the largest pumpkin display in Northern Michigan." NMET is a fully approved 501(c)3 charity. GOOD NEIGHBORS FOOD PANTRY of Boyne City is open every Tuesday from 2 to 5:30 p.m. The pantry is located on the west side of the Boyne Area Free Clinic building at 624 State St. Volunteers are needed for various tasks, from stocking shelves to picking up food, to helping on pantry days. Donations for operating the pantry and purchasing food are also welcome. HABITAT SEEKS VOLUNTEERS - Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity is seeking volunteer support for the 2015 Northern Michigan NKBA Kitchen Tour, which benefits Habitat. On Saturday, Oct. 17th volunteers are needed from 9 - 5, full or half day shifts, to help greet attendees at each of the seven homeson the tour. Homes span from Indian River down to Rapid City and over to Northport. Volunteers are needed Tuesday, October 13th and Wednesday, October 14th from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. We will be assembling ICF blocks around the perimeter of the home. These blocks are like big Legos which would be fun for the whole family!
