Revised Boyne City waterfront concepts focus on views
From the Petoskey News-Review: After hearing the community's views in July on a set of concepts for possible future modifications to Boyne City's public waterfront spaces, a committee working on honing those concepts has placed its focus on just that - views. On Tuesday, the committee heading up an initiative that's come to be known as "Boyne on the Water," unveiled its revised concepts for four waterfront areas in the city. Warren Rauhe said one of the recurring comments that the group heard at and following the July session involved a desire among many to create or preserve views of the lake. Based on that feedback many of the plans were modified to either reduce the footprint of structures or move them to open up as much space as possible. Here's a look at some of the highlights of each of the four park concepts. News-Review story.

Public comments are due Oct. 7; Final design coming Nov. 17
Click here to see the plan drawings on the city website. Then, please offer your comments by taking this survey or emailing info@boynecity.com. Comments are due Oct. 7. The next steps in the process will include refining the designs based on the most recent feedback, presentation of the final design on Nov. 17 and a final report that will be completed in December or January.

Walkabout Sculpture Show announces photography contest
Boyne City's Walkabout Sculpture Committee is kicking off a photography contest open to all amateur or professional photographers to capture their favorite sculpture and post it on the Boyne City Main Street Facebook page. The photo contest will run from now until November 1, with the winner announced and recognized at the June 2016 Artist Reception. The winner will be chosen by the Walkabout Committee and will receive a cash prize of $100 in addition to recognition at the Artist Reception, local media, newsletters and websites. The June installation of the Walkabout Sculpture Show with eight beautiful sculptures in and around downtown Boyne City has created a local buzz. Six of the original works are travelling pieces on loan for one year from artists throughout the state of Michigan, showcasing the bond among art, nature and observer. The Walkabout Committee is also encouraging people to vote for their favorite sculpture online at www.walkaboutsculptureshow.com or by picking up a brochure at nearly any downtown Boyne City business, taking a tour of the pieces and completing the ballot. The People's Choice Award of a $1,000 will be presented to the winning artist at the culmination of the show next June. All the featured art works are for sale.  Anyone interested in purchasing a piece or finding out more about the photo contest may contact the Boyne City Main Street office at 231-582-9009 or emailing Mainstreet@boynecity.com.
U.S. Rep. Benishek abruptly announces retirement at end of term
From the Detroit Free Press: U.S. Rep. Dan Benishek, who earlier this year broke a pledge not to run for a fourth 2-year term next year, announced Tuesday he won't run again after all in 2016, throwing the race for the northern Michigan seat he has held since 2011 wide open. Benishek, R-Crystal Falls, gave little explanation for his sudden reversal. Benishek's retirement is expected to draw a crowd of interested Republicans. Among the names frequently mentioned as possible replacements have been former state Sen. Jason Allen of Traverse City, the state's senior deputy director for veterans affairs; state Sen. Tom Casperson, R-Escanaba, state Sen. Wayne Schmidt, R-Traverse City and state Rep. Pete Pettalia, R-Presque Isle. Already in the race is Lon Johnson, a Kalkaska resident with deep ties to national Democrats and the former head of the state Democratic Party. Full story.
