"Boyne on the Water" plans to be unveiled Sept. 15 at high school
How can Boyne's waterfront be improved? Hundreds of groups and individuals from the community offered valuable input on that question. Your ideas have been brought together into a more finalized design concept which will be unveiled on Sept. 15th. To get the best possible final design, we need your feedback. A draft plan will be unveiled at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Boyne City High School. City officials and a steering committee for the project are encouraging area residents to attend and to help spread the word about this meeting. Dubbed "Boyne on the Water," the effort is part of a grant-funded program conducted by Michigan State University in collaboration with the Michigan Municipal League. The team is using the input and suggestions gathered through sessions held in May and July - plus follow-up comments via email - to create a more finalized design concept that will be shared with the public at this third meeting. For more information about the project, and some of the ideas presented in previous session, visit the city's website . Anyone who has questions about the project may call steering committee chairman Jim Baumann at the Boyne Area Chamber, 231-582-6222, or Barb Brooks at Boyne City Hall, 231-582-6597.
> Refreshments will be provided by Red Mesa Grill.

Northern Eagle/Logo Pros is closing its retail location at 118 Water St. because owner Bethany VanCuyl has merged the Logo Pros portion of her business with SunFrog Wholesale into a new screen-printing and embroidery business called LogoLaunch, which will be based in Gaylord. Northern Eagle is having a 70% off sale and will close its store by October 1. Bethany said she has been working on the merger since May and it was "an opportunity that was too good to pass up." She will continue to live in Boyne City and said the new job gives her support that will allow her to enjoy living here even more. Her new company can still be reached at the current Logo Pros phone number of 231-582-0988. News story on the success of SunFrog Shirts.
Smitten Designs moving to Northern Eagle/Logo Pros location
Smitten Designs Studio will be moving into the former Northern Eagle/Logo Pros location, which is next door and is part of the same building. It's actually a timely opportunity for Smitten owner Ivette Dixon. Shannon Pearce, who operates SPK On Water Art & Design in a side room attached to Smitten, will also move next door when Smitten moves.
Soon-to-be announced retailer moving to Smitten's location
A soon-to-be announced retail business will open in Smitten Designs' former location, probably in November. Chamber Executive Director Jim Baumann said the retailer is not quite ready to make their opening announcement, but he said it is a very successful strong business with four other locations including Petoskey and Traverse City. "This will be an exciting addition to our downtown," Baumann said.

Stiggs Brewing Company plans to open next spring or summer in the former Railroad Office Building at 112 S. The primary focus will be a beer bar, serving both in-house brews and other Michigan beverages. The full bar will also serve wines and spirits with an emphasis on Michigan-made products." He hopes to attract craft beer enthusiasts by providing a large selection of products for both consumption at the beer bar and to take home with them. He also plans brewery tours, beer classes, beer-tasting sessions, a home brew club and supply shop, local home brew competitions, competing in local and statewide events, and hosting local beer events. The non-profit artists group held a work party Thursday to start the cleanup and painting of their new home. They will hold a moving sale at their Lake Street gallery on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. until all is sold. They plan to open the new gallery during the Harvest Festival on Saturday, Oct. 3. Curator Jackie Wollenberg expressed her thanks to both Glen Catt and their new no-rent landlord, Jim White. "I am very passionate about not letting our Boyne Arts Collective disappear into the sunset," she said. "We have come such a long way in nine years and have made our mark in the Boyne community." Website.
Depot building will become a community arts studio next year
Create Community Arts Studio founder and executive director Sara Manchester has started remodeling the former railroad depot building at 151 Ray Street. Create has recently received approval as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, which means it can start receiving grants and donations. Manchester said the studio will probably open next summer or early fall in time for the beginning of the 2016-17 school year. The initial focus will be providing after-school programs for children in grades K-4. She said the building needs a lot of work to make it suitable for future use by children and families. The organization's goal is to "provide time, space, and materials to experience free expression and personal growth utilizing an open studio model." Manchester holds a master of arts degree in art therapy, and her master's thesis involved researching community art studios similar to what she is establishing with Create.
