CGSA's National Tournament Program

One of the many membership benefits offered by the Canadian Golf Superintendents Association (CGSA is the National Tournament Program.

This program recognizes superintendents who host national level events. CGSA will present a plaque to the host superintendent during the tournament events. These opportunities help promote both the profession and the Association to the golfing public as well as providing a tangible way for the CGSA to recognize the hard work of a member superintendent and to expose the profession to media outlets and other interested parties.

Ajax superintendent renews professional certification

Neil D. Acton, CGCS, director of golf course management at Deer Creek Golf Clubs, Ajax, Ontario, Canada, has completed the renewal process for maintaining his status as a Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS) with the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA).

Acton has been at Deer Creek Golf Clubs since 1989. A 32-year GCSAA member, he initially achieved his certification in 1984. Approximately 1,600 golf course superintendents worldwide currently hold "CGCS" status.

To qualify for GCSAA's new competency-based certification program, a candidate must have at least three year's experience as a golf course superintendent, be employed in that capacity and meet post-secondary educational requirements and/or continuing education points. The candidate's knowledge, skills and abilities are validated through the development of a portfolio consisting of their responses to skill statements, case-study scenarios and submission of work samples; an on-site inspection of their golf facility; and a rigorous six-hour examination covering: equipment, irrigation systems, materials and technology; golf course and grounds; human resources, rules of golf, financial and administrative systems, regulatory and programmatic systems, crisis management, project management and ethics and values.

Maintaining certified status requires renewal every five years after the initial date of certification. To fulfill certification renewal requirements, a candidate must participate in 150 hours of continuing education and professional development.

Member Services Committee Looking for New Ways to Serve Members

The Canadian Golf Superintendents Association (CGSA) constantly strives to offer its members the best value for their membership. As the only national organization dedicated to promoting and supporting golf course superintendents and golf course management professionals in Canada, CGSA provides benefitsincluding representation and promotion of the profession, advocacy, certification and professional development. These programs and services ensure that superintendents and their staff are recognized as a key component of the industry and of the individual golf facility. The benefits derived for both you and your facility from being a CGSA member are far greater in value than the annual cost of membership.

As part of the Member Services Committee mandate for the 2013-2014 year the committee is looking for ways to add additional value to your membership. In order for us to understand what members expect from our association, the committee has prepared a short survey to get your views and feedback.

Please watch for a survey e-mail early next week.  It will take only a few minutes to complete and your input will help us serve you better.

We welcome your suggestions and we look forward to your continued involvement with the CGSA.

If you have any questions or require any assistance, please feel free to contact Lori Micucci, ext. 226 or by e-mail

We hope your are enjoying the latest issue of CGSA's GreenMatter News.  This June installment is the first published fully in-house by CGSA staff.  Beginning in July, Keeping In Touch will once again feature reports from our regional directors describing the latest developments in their regions of the country.
